So, I will be hopefully putting my nose cone on my lower unit this weekend but Im a little leery of stripping the paint from the aluminum without screwing up the aluminum itself or the shape of the lower unit (like accidentally sand too deep in a couple spots and create dents). Anybody have any suggestions for products or techniques that would make my life easier for this would be GREAT!

Go down to Hope Depot, and purchase a gallon of "Jasco" and a couple of brushes, as well as a metal bucket.

Pour a small amount of Jasco in the metal bucket, and place below the lower unit. Dip the brushes in Jasco and just brush it on the lower unit and wait.. Occasionally adding some more. If you wait a few minutes you should be able to wipe off paint, powdercoat, your skin, or anything else you want.. LOL

I'm not sure of the "proper" way to dispose of that shit as it's toxic as hell, and more volatile the BBD on a Pirates cove topic.

Hence the reason I said pour a small amount in the bucket. Keep the rest in the can.

By the way get several pairs of thick, thick rubber gloves. The jasco will burn through those as well.. When your fingers start burning, wash them with soap and water, and put on a new pair.

It won't hurt the aluminum.

hmm... nice! Sounds fairly easy.

I was also told it was a good idea to etch the aluminum before using the 2 part epoxy to get it to stick better. Any suggestions for that?

Actually you want a ruff surface for the epoxy to grip to. Then clean with acetone apply epoxy. I also used Duraglass if you run out of the epoxy that comes with the kit.

if your using jasco, have a hose/ bucket of water ready and buy some chem resistant gloves.

Automotive Paint Stripper.

Boat stores have acid etch primers that help adhesion. But, if I remember right, that may have had an adverse affect on the expoxy.

If you're going low water pickup, make sure to seal the old water jackets well. I sanded mine down a bit too much & had a pinhole that bubbled the paint from the unit when I ran the motor off a hose.

Good Luck.

So... Here's what I started with.... As you can see, some of the paint was already starting to go so those areas went pretty easy.

I decided I would do the proper trimming and fitting before I started getting rid of all the paint. Well, I at least did the majority of it.

Here you can see where I cut a relief in to allow the cone to slide a little further onto the lower unit. I cut it a little deeper than necessary to this point, but, I still have to do a little more trimming in other areas to get it to set on there really nice and square. Btw..... That new Craftsman Muti-tool made VERY quick and EXTREMELY precise work of this think casting. Damn near like a knife through butter.

Well, after scrapping off the initial coat which had been re-applied a few times while still wet, I had realized and remembered that not too long after we bought the boat, we had the skeg repaired after my cousin ran it aground in Havasu and ripped the Skegguard off that was on it. So..... the Jasco's wasnt penetrating the filler or epoxy or whatever was used and therefore wasnt getting down to the original paint in some areas (kinda explains why the paint was already coming off on some areas of the lower unit). So..... out came the wire wheel and a lot more man hours cleaning this thing.

Here's where I am after about 3 hours or so. And I still have the other side to do.
