I can't believe how EZ it is to change the oil and filter in an outboard
Push a button for the cowl latch and it pulls right off.
Connect a drain hose to the drain fitting and loosen a couple turns.
Oil filter EZ to reach and has a trough and drain hole for excess oil
Literally a 15 minute job with 14 minutes to spare.:)

Been wrenching all my life
As long as it doesn't require a hoist I can probably fix it and it's done right
Wonder what they get for an oil service at the shop?

It’s a lot more of pain in the ass when it’s in the water at a harbor. Off the water sure.

Just did my Verado this past week. Oil, fuel filters and gear oil. Much easier than my I/O’s.

Did you change the impeller too?? That really Should be done every year. 2 years in the heat and it's done.
No, I realize the heat but manual says 3 years or 300 hours
I'll have to see if that's a warranty item in my 3 years

Possibly. It's normally a wear item. Do not let it go three years! Not if it's out at the river anyways. I just changed mine last trip, there was hardly any water pressure when I checked it on the launch ramp.

Havasu Springs had it in stock.

Any special deal on changing the impeller on an OB?
I assume you just remove the lower unit and the housing is there like Merc Alpha drive?

Let's start by saying, my OB is a 97...

I bought the shop manual for my engine, and Carefully followed the instructions.

No special tools were required. Took longer to drive to Havasu Springs than it did to change the impeller! 😝

Oh and buy the whole kit. Not just the impeller itself.

Make sure rotation is correct and coat the inside of the housing and impeller tips with Glycerine. Avail Walmart a couple bucks.

Unless the housing is scored, keep it. I have been told the new water pumps last quite a bit longer than the old Alpha/2.4 impellers do. Which would be nice to NOT have to change it every year. Although its only about a 30 minute job.

Local shop here wants $210.00 to replace an impeller (that's labor and impeller) on a 1992 250 Blk Mx. (2 stroke) I've done them in the past, usually takes a couple hours. I go SLOW because I don't do them every day and want to make sure all is right when putting back together. The Glycerin is a good tip, I have used a small amount of diluted hand soap to help ease the new impeller in the housing.

Damn.... I could make good money doing outboard water pumps then. No joke, I can get mine 100% done in 30 minutes. Glycerin may help, but the real trick, spin the input shaft while applying pressure down on the pump housing. That will push the blades into their correct positions.

Seriously, you could make BANK here (Idaho) especially if you had a mobile set up. If I were to have a local shop do it, middle of April is the soonest I could get an appointment.

DIY. Its not hard at all. But the rate quoted is reasonable considering the going rates for specialist mechanic labor and the retail cost of the impeller.

Actually, that's a good point. What's it worth to you to have a legit shop service your motor/outdrive if DIY is not an option. 200 bucks to keep your motor running? not a bad investment. Even a old smoker like mine would cost thousands to replace or repair if it tanks.

yes. There are two self locking nuts facing upwards and I think three or five facing downwards to remove. I recall them being 9/16". then the lower unit drops out and you access the pump. Lower unit weighs about 50 lbs so don't get fingers or toes in the way...it will drop out quick if you're not careful. I used to use a floor jack to assist. May as well service the gear oil at the same time.

Do it once or twice and it gets really easy. Just be careful when reassembling that you get the shift shaft and the plastic water nozzle rising from the pump into correct position (into the descending copper receiver pipe) or you may need to dis/reassemble to correct the problem.
