Out Of Ear Headphones?

Also known as "Bone Conduction", but thought that may draw the wrong people if put in the title. An audiologist suggested these for my son. He is apparently losing some hearing in his right ear. No loud music, no shooting without ears (and haven't done any in a long time). It's just kind of happening. They said something like this may help him hear more clearly.

Anyone have experience with these?

I know a lot of runners and bikers (bicycle) riders are using them so they can still hear the outside noise (think vehicle traffic). Those that have them seem to swear by them. I plan on getting some in near future.

The wife just got some for me (Inductivv) , now If I could get my I phone to work asa sound pickup soas I can watch TV and not depend on Closed caption....

I bought a set of Shokz that were recommended by my MTB crew. They were on sale at REI so I’m gonna try them out today while snowboarding. I like having music but hated not being able to hear my surroundings and equipment, so hopefully this solves the issue.

I just had my hearing checked...

During one of the tests, they did that to me. The sounds were crystal clear.

All 5 in my family have them for outdoor sports/hiking etc. work excellent and as said before, you can hear what’s going on around you. Then I have a set of Sony WH 1000XM4 over ear for when I fly and want everyone to F-off and leave me alone. Then there’s the Air Pod Pros for everything else. Long story short, I spend a lot of time listing to stuff and highly recommend the Aftershokz.

As a followup, they worked great! Very happy with the comfort and how they sat under my helmet.

He's been using over ear stuff, and in ear. The doctor said these bone things would work better for both the loss of hearing ad the sound quality. I'd never seen them before...but after reading, the tech is the same they use for some of the hearing aid implant stuff.

… I had lost probably 80% of my hearing a few months ago… And I really didn’t realize it… When I was getting my once over at my doctors office, I said to the physicians assistant oh yeah, something happened to my hearing… well they blasted my ears out, and then in my left ear where I was almost completely deaf… the physicians assistant/assistant really blasted me… She got a ton of wax out which I thought I had already gotten all of it out… the pain was the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life… In my case, I guess I had to go through the pain to get to the pleasure… now I hear quite well.., i’m not saying any of this is applicable to your son, because I would assume the doctors have already checked all that… The most important thing is that he have an MRI???…

We were hoping for ear wax, that's what prompted the visit Wednesday morning to his doctor. Dr looked and checked, then it went to audiologist. They said something about the "hairs" responsible for high frequency not responding. He used to listen to music, not loud at all, but now listens to podcasts and stuff. Wondering if music just didn't sound right to him anymore. This kid has been going through the ringer the past few years. This is another issue, but hopefully one we can make better progress with.

My ray ban sunglasses work like that.. the speaker is actually behind your ear and when you listen Otto music it sounds like it’s in your ears through the bone

… Neighbor girl just got some Beats Studio 3 headphones and she said they’re incredible no noise distortion.., I don’t know if that will help the issue???… she said they are marketed by Dr. Dre… A rapper… I think they were about $180…

I have multiple sets of Shokz, my favorite is the Open Run Pro. I have been using them for a few years now. I use them daily for work calls, meetings, etc. When not on a call or in a meeting I always have something playing on them to drown out the ringing of tinnitus.

Like your son I also have diminished hearing in my left ear and the sound from these is crystal clear. The beauty of these is by using bone conduction I hear the same in both ears.

Another bonus is when using them in a loud environment, you put a pair of foam ear plugs in and you still hear whatever is playing perfectly fine without cranking them to the moon like normal headphones and blowing out the ear drum.

I can't recommend them enough!

They are very quiet.. people around you don’t hear it when they are in your head

I just bought a set from Mojawa off of facebook. I bought them because they are waterproof and can be worn while swimming. Not sure how that would feel but I am willing to give it a try. Once I get them, I'll drop a review.

I don’t currently have a lot of info but plan on getting more. My son has already seen two specialist. Couple different options on the table. One of those is hearing through the drum the other is the bone.

The top lines are bone conduction hearing. I just went thru the same tests about 2 weeks ago and had similar results.

Finally received these and first thing I noticed is that they are really small. I've had BC headphones in the past and I remember them being a lot bigger. Not bad just bigger. As far as sound quality goes these sound good and were very clear. These do not reproduce bass very well, but I would not expect them to because of the design, that is why I have the in the ear kind for when I want to beat my ear drums into submission. All in all I think these will work very well for what I want to do.

I bought a pair of Shokz OpenRun and like them however the vibration puts my vertigo issues in play so they are a no go for me.

I currently can't listen to any type of headphones without issues. Sucks to say the least.

"Santa" brought a set for my son. They are some off brand ones that had good reviews on Amazon. (Didn't want to spend a bunch of money. Don't have a bunch, and didn't know how well they'd work for him.) He tried them tonight, and was really happy with them. He'll mess with them more tomorrow, but they seem to work really well. Weird, to still heat the surroundings with the music, and noone else hearing it. I'll probably have a better report in a couple days

Son used them for a few hours today. He really likes them! He likes that it can be "loud", but still able to here the surroundings, and we can't hear his music.
I asked him if he was able to tell a noticeable difference, between them and the other headphones. He said definitely. He has significant hearing loss in his right ear, but with these the sound is balanced between the two. That being the case, these would probably be good choices for those of us with damaged hearing.
