Ummmm. This is not the whole story. My ATF neighbor is working the case. The couple neglected to include a very important piece to the story. The husband was trying to sell a couple of the guns at a pawn shop. The pawn shop owner is who tipped off the authorities.

And he will end up being the "Bad Guy" when in reality the Pitiful way our Govt. is run and disregard for Tax Payer's Dollars is so Typical. The waste would depress us if we really knew how bad things really are. How many Acres of Military Vehicles, Planes, and Equipment are sitting in the Desert "Mothballed"?

You are not wrong here. My neighbor said as he was interviewing the guy, he clearly had no idea what he had nor the laws surrounding the possession/sale. I know ignorance has no defense but it looks like the efforts will be focused on how he got them in the first place.

The "Hillbilly Hotline" has a strict policy regarding the passing of information.

This covers spent money, circumstances of procurement and applies to tools and autoparts as well...No one needs to tell wives or other CFO's financial arrangements (cash, trade-ins...etc.)
Fallen off a truck or sold from your own supply...don't ask don't tell applies here.
All purchases and trades are final. Seller never made sale, buyer forgets where they made purchase.
(This protects both if married, as many times sales are of items wife didn't know about, and bought by someone who's wife doesn't need to know either.)

Even minor infractions will cause immediate and permanent removal from the "mailing list".

My gut feeling would be to "keep, hide, wait a few years" as well, buy, then what. My understanding is, illegal as Hell to possess a full auto, illegal to sell, who you sell it to can't apply for a stamp or permit to own it, etc. What would a guy do, hint around till you find someone that would buy it and hide it themselves ? When you read about possessing a full auto, they make it sound pretty damn illegal, like if they get a whiff of it, they're taking your house apart? Just asking for a friend.

In a lot of states, it's legal to own a full auto if it was purchased legally and you paid for and received the ATF tax stamp. It's like having a suppressor here. Those having serial numbers that are connected to the government, not going to be very "moveable" from a retail standpoint. I believe even in Texas, at a pawn shop, first thing they'd do is run the numbers. Here they do it to verify it was not on a hot list...but I'm sure those numbers from a military issue would throw a flag as well.

As for how ATF or local law enforcement would handle rumors of someone having one, location would be a big thing. Here, there are several people I know of with them. I believe all are registered FFL's. They are legal to possess here as long as you have the paperwork. I don't believe you can even get the paperwork in some states. If it were in a house there, and they were so inclined, they'd probably make your life a living hell.

Moving that many illegal firearms would be tough for most gun types. Most actual gun people obey laws, so inherently they are not associated with cartels and such.

The seller that ran the auction is going to get probed pretty hard. There's a big difference between empty and full cases, and I find it real hard to believe nobody opened a lid to check.
