On the edge of my comfort zone.

Made a trip to Havasu this morning. The neighbor had let me know that a gate had blown open in the wind earlier this week.

Made the trip solo today. Typically set the cruise at 75 to 78 and let it ride. Don’t need to be paying extra for any tickets.

When I hit the 40 at Barstow a Ford Raptor blew by me. Not sure what got into me today but I thought F it. I’m giving him 1,300’ to 2,000 feet and pacing. So there I am running 88 to 90 all the way to Needles. Thought maybe I would get a picture of the Raptor getting a ticket. Or worst case scenario, I’ll be getting a picture of myself getting a ticket. Never happened! We did pass two CHP that had clients on the side of roadway and I saw one going the other direction. Yes, I gave CHP the curtesy of slowing down while passing.

My thinking was the Raptor had enough room to get the ticket first lol… or I guess I could have been the sucker if one approached from behind or the backside of an on-ramp.

What’s your comfort zone or strategy for crossing the desert?

I find it much more enjoyable and less stressful just cruising at a safe reasonable speed that LEO is good with. There's enough other idiots on the road these days. I no longer feel the desire/need to play in that pool. It worx for me so far.

This.

I was stuck in traffic on the 60 the other day (or 57, can't remember), in the fast lane...pretty much a crawl/stopped. There were Semis passing me in the carpool lane, which was relatively clear. Got to the end of the problem (road construction shutting down 2 lanes) and there are 4+ CHP guys sitting there guarding the workers....nobody bats an eye at the Semis in the carpool lane.

If'n I'd jumped in there, I'd undoubtedly be a CHP "client"....yet these fucks get away with it.

Kinda makes you wonder why you keep trying to do shit the right way

One time when I was driving to a ski area on a 2-lane highway, I was passing every car in my rush to get on the slopes and hit the fresh snow. As I was passing one vehicle, the last one I passed, I looked over and realized it was an unmarked Washington State Patrol vehicle. Twenty or so minutes later, as I got out of my car in the parking lot, the guy who pulled in next to me looked at me and said “I bet you didn’t know that was a cop.” I just smiled.

75 is max I'll drive across the desert. Anything faster than that your reaction time is really limited. I get it someone else could cause the accident but pointing the finger doesnt undo the accident and it vary well could've been avoidable had someone not been speeding. About once a week I cut people off unintentionally. I'm going 75, maybe 80. They're way back there.... next thing I know they pass me going over 100. They came up quicker because I'm not expecting them to be going over 100 in a 65.
Couple years ago an Audi went flying by me on I10 at Verrado in Buckeye. Someone made a lane change not expecting the Audi to be going over 100mph. Audi served and spun and rolled off the side of the road... who's at fault?

Isn't the interpretation whomever breaks the law first and causes a cascade of events on that basis is the responsible party? In your case, the Audi.

I'm on Rice road a lot, I do like 5 over. People blow by me at 15-20 (or more) over. Sometimes I'll speed up and follow, but only if they aren't going much faster than I already was. I let the peeps doing reckless speed go, I don't want my own matching ticket.

Truck limits me to 98mph which is about my comfort zone so I set the cruise control to 97mph to play it safe 😎

This is just a courtesy reminder to how things work. And always check your calendar before hitting the road.

I love being passed by those guys, let them get the ticket. Using waze, my radar detector and driving within reason for the conditions of the flow of traffic keeps out of trouble most of the time. I think its even more important when towing, because 60/65 is a snails pace even when towing but could easily get you pulled over.
