So a 40 year old Czech gal friend was going through her garage and was showing me a box of records her dad had left her. She's "dating" a guy in Fla who just opened a vinyl record store and waas thinking of shipping them off to him. We stood there and she flipped through each album and I saw stuff I knew from my older sisters collections of the late 60s all the way up to maybe early 80s. Beatles, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Jeff Beck, Stephen Stills, CSNY, etc.... I had been reading that lately the folks around 40-60s have become re interested in old vinyl and music from that era. So I told her hold off on shipping to Fla and let me do some research on this boxes worth. So I Googled record stores near me and boy are there a lot. I took out a notepad and just began calling and man oh man are they some interesting cats in this biz.... after 8 calls I was exhausted and I had her take a video flipping slowly through her albums and sent it to the more sane business guys who own shops I located. I currently have 3 stores that would like us to come by with the records so they can make a bid. I'd hang the video on RDP so you guys can better enjoy the ride however I can't load cell vids onto here w/ o an app I guess. I don't like to have my cell carrying a lot of apps cause I ain't the dude staring at his cell all day bent necked. I'll circle back to update after we make our vinyl store runs next week.

Did you call this place? They just recently moved...

Hey thanks. No they aren't on my list of locals and so far there's no need/ desire to drive into the IE for a couple extra bucks. I think at this stage we're all about the experience and fun. She may prove to be a tough negotiator or perhaps this is not the setting to negotiate much... could be these old records are each worth $20 but she may stumble into a gem. Who knows... but kinda fun to see.

Popular used records and new pressings (of current or yesteryear albums) are priced like gold now! When I was in college (96-00), the vinyl record industry was nearly dead. I should have snatched up all that I could instead of now worthless CD’s. Lol

My dad has a hundreds of records and is talking about giving them to me soon. I’ll display and use them proudly in our media room.

Good luck finding a new home for those records. I’d be curious what your friend ends up getting for any of the rare or otherwise desirable ones.

Yeah, Im curious too... thats why I jumped in. Memorabilia stuff can be a blast if you go at it without money as the driver. I had to set the tone on the calls with some of these younger dudes owning the shops.... the first call isn't a negotiation call, its simply me learning is there even a market for these old records. I had to talk with some kids that don't quite have business savy yet but the sharp ones heard me and after seeing video want to see in person. I figured if there was a crazy valuable one in there one of these guys would jump in his car and come to me.

Price them out on Discogs.com. Put the name in and a number from the label.

Some of them may have decent value, others may not.

Not too many resellers will pay $20 for a record, keep that in mind.

I often buy 60/70's and 80's records, sometimes I can find between 7-10 records shipped out the door for under $35.

If you have a box of 100 records, sell them as a lot for $200-$300, there are plenty of colectors on OfferUp and FB Marketplace that are always looking to buy "boxes" of records.

Or just enjoy them :) That's always fun.

Make sure you wont miss them. I literally gave away 3000-4000 records because they were taking up too much room. Several original pressings and hard to get stuff from years of collecting and dj-ing. I still kick myself for that- especially seeing the price of vinyl now.

Ha you got the wrong audience I'm afraid my friend. I've heard her music blaring in my hood... I'm not even sure what to call it but "Heavy Metal Euro Trash" comes to mind. She didn't even know any of these titles her pops left her and she'd have no interest in getting a turntable for damn sure. This chick is Euro eastern block deep.

Same here, but I made the mistake of trading away a couple of Technics 1200 turntables. I only had several hundred records that survived the backyard party DJ scene.

People are dumping CD's now for .50-$1.00 per CD, they are a great buy.

I'll take them off your hands! 😁

I kept all my vinyl from the '70s and have a '70s vintage stereo system. This stuff is quite desirable now. Records are pretty heavy so shipping them to Florida might cost a bit of money.

My kid took my 1200's and ran lol, but they all use serato now which is cool and he had no need for the vinyl. Just wanted the turntables.

Want to get really sick? Look at the price of Disney VHS on ebay! I dont know how many we trashed once the kids got big.

I would use Discogs (website or app) to enter the album info, then it will give you a valuation range based on condition etc.

If you use the app, you can just scan the barcode (if there is one) and it will enter the info for you, super easy.

Years back, I got tired of moving them around on shelves in tbe basement.
I took 4 or 5 milk crates full to the curb along with several garbage bags of vhs tapes. My kids had collected hundreds.
Gone. I refuse to think about their value today.....

Love vinyl. I stayed at a place out in Joshua tree last week with the family and they had a turntable there. It was great. So refreshing to hear that crackle I didn’t stream any music the whole time I was there strictly spinning.

My 15 year old daughter got a basic turntable for Christmas, along with a couple of records. New vinyl records are around $30, which is crazy to me.

I think that vinyl is popular with high school kids now, so maybe the demand and prices for vintage vinyl is heading up?

I set up our old stereo system in the garage and bought a nice turntable to play our old rock albums.i go to the local swap meet and pick up a few gems that I don't have. Most are anywhere from two to ten bucks. You just have to carefully look them over to make sure they're in good shape. Beats the twenty bucks Walmart charges.

I buy them as a listener, and not as a collector looking for resale value.

If I know I'm gonna listen to them regularly, my preference is buying new represses of classic records from Pink Floyd, Zep, and many other hard rock and new wave bands.

You can find smoking deals on used classic country records - artists like Marty Robbins, Tammy Wynette, Charlie Rich, etc.

Punk vinyl is usually spendy no matter new, or used. I also buy freestyle/disco/early hip hop, and they too are spendy, mainly because they are mostly never repressed.

Merchbar has a decent sale on classic rock records right now. Target online also offers free shipping and during the holidays, offers buy 2 get 1 free.

I occasionally look for records at garage sales, and thrift stores, but people often think they are worth $$$$ - when the records only have marginal resale value and can easily be found on discogs.

Enjoy :)

One of my buddies has an old Cheech and Chong album complete with the giant rolling paper it came with.

I’m not sure how we didn’t use that paper at some point in the 80s😂

My first exposure to that album was…the public library.
I was in gradeschool and checked it out a few times 🤣

My brother was a Club DJ in the Valley in the 80's and 90's. He did all the big LA parties. I still have a garage full of all his albums along with the ones he collected and knew were worth a lot. Problem is, it's a shit ton on records to go through! 😳

I finally found my quiet riot metal health album. It's still wrapped in plastic where I never opened it as I had the cassette.

I have a few boxes of vinyl stashed in a closet. In one of them, I have a 1968 copy of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida still sealed in the original plastic. It was actually given to me by one of the band members. Their label was an account at my grandfathers office supply store in Beverly Hills in the '60s and '70s, and they came in for some custom name plates or badges or something. Other sealed albums I got that way are Incense and Peppermint - Strawberry Alarm Clock, Psychotic Reaction - Count Five, and a few others I've forgotten about. As soon as the reps from the record companies found out the employees had teen-age kids, they'd throw all kinds of new stuff to our folks. Between my cousins and brother there were 5 of us, so we cleaned up. I was always a music junkie, so had a lot of the albums already, and just put the sealed ones in the back of the stack without even opening them.

I made some calls to area vinyl stores in OC and spoke with maybe 7 record dudes. Of those 7 there are 3 that are engaged and showing an interest in seeing what my friend has.... one even offered to come to us to see what she has. We'll see what shakes out.... I'm guessing its more like coastal dinner out money as opposed to 3 night Cabo stay.;)
