With all these side by side posts going on, I thought I'd share with you all the toy I made a deal on this past weekend. Picking it up in a few weeks. 650HP Lingenfelter LS3, 4l80 manual valve body, Fox 5 way bypasses...a bunch of other stuff. Hauls ass and handles rocks and steep climbs like nothing. No burned up belts, flimsy cages, or bent up suspension parts either.

Going to register it street legal in AZ. Thinking a custom plate. Something like "SXS KILR" maybe...:D

Nice pickup err uh ride! I envy you except I don't because I wouldn't want to find my limits before I found the car's limits.

Drive safely and show and tell us more about it

Good looking rig. They do well.
What’s it doing in the snow? Those crossed up chassis are built in Tucson and made for the desert.

Seller lives in Indiana. We flew out there this past weekend to test drive it and meet him. Looking forward to getting it back out here running the desert like it should be. There's too much water, snow, and mud back east for our taste.

Let me know when you have it in the havasu/Parker area and we can go run some rocks and desert.

Looks fun! You’ll kill the golf carts in the open spaces.. you won’t be able to hang with them on tight technical stuff.

Looks awesome and looks like it'll be a bunch of fun! I'd love to see a video of it running some whoops at high speed. I've yet to see a straight axle, short and light wheel base vehicle handle high speed suspension obstacles anywhere near as well as an independently sprung vehicle.

Will do. We want to try and find an off-road path from Searchlight down to Havasu, so if we are able to do that we may be down in Havasu occasionally.

I do wish it was an IFS, but the difference in performance isn't worth the extra maintenance and huge difference in money for what we do. Seems like the key is actually to go faster with this thing and get the suspension really working. The smaller whoops created by side by sides won't be a problem at all. I did take it on some larger whoops like Glamis sand highway stuff during the test drive and it did pretty well. I started out going a little slower, but the seller kept telling me to hit it and go faster. It's heavy car, so it doesn't buck much and the suspension takes it. I doubt I'll take this to Glamis because we have the rail for that. Where we run on hard pack and rocks primarily in NV, there isn't too much in the way of whoops. Just washouts and rock patches on the trails. There's one spot I know of on the way up to the top of a mountain we'd like to get to where we have been stopped twice in the jeeps because of rocks we couldn't get over. This thing will roll right over it, but I'm not sure about a side by side. The long 4 seat Can Am would definitely high center.

Seller ran KOH with this car several times. The last time he ran, he started dead last because the power steering pulley wasn't on correctly and he kept throwing the belt. Ended up working his way up through the crowd to 14th.

you need to watch king of hammers and then report back.

He isn't saying price but a used ultra4 car cost more than a new sxs. To put it another way his axles cost more than a new sxs.

Yea my car would put a hurt on that thing until you get into the rock crawling areas. And the new era of sxs i cannot keep up with unless it’s a spot i can utilize the suspension for a big area or able to stretch my legs. So won’t be much of a sxs killer lol.

they’ve came a long way from the Ranger and Rhino days, where they really were just a 4wd golf cart.

I have. Technology has helped a lot, but there's still that annoying physics thing with so much unsprung weight trying to be controlled during it's cycle.

This cost him less than a SXS if I’m reading his references correctly.

I disagree. I have now ridden in built side by sides as well as an Ultra 4. From my observations, the side by sides did not come close to outdoing the capabilities of the U4, not even in most technical stuff. The only way I could see a side by side getting away from this thing would be if it were in very narrow trails with a lot of 90 degree turns right on top of each other. I guess some people ride that stuff, but we don't.

I can appreciate the loyalty to the side by sides, but this will be another test/prove effort for me. I've had guys tell me they could keep up in Glamis with their side by side they have as much or more money into than my rail. Nope. I can outrun them every time. To be honest and give respect, they do well, but I can keep steadily increasing the distance between us even while they cut corners and I've got more left. Me having run the dunes for about 37 years might have something to do with it too though.

We'll test/prove with this Ultra 4 on hard pack now. I have a buddy with a built Can Am who swears he will leave me behind. I don't see it, but I guess we'll find out.

For me, I guess there's a little more to it than just being the fastest every time. I'd rather have a purpose-built vehicle that won't break if you hit something wrong or run out of talent while trying to be the fastest every time. The seller has rolled this U4 and was very honest about having done so. Basically flip it back over and keep going. Roll a side by side and it's a bent cage, cracked plastic, bent wheels, bent control arms, etc, etc, etc. No screwing around with belts here either. Almost the best of all though? No helmets required. We are well beyond that 1,000cc limit.

Someone mentioned price. I got a hell of a deal on this thing, so I'll try and keep it in perspective, but I'm going to chuckle every time I hear someone threw down $25-$30K on a new side by side and then put another $10-$15K into it for aftermarket stuff. Then I'll chuckle some more when they bend something and have to replace that too.

mom not a SxS guy myself. I’m actually comparing them to my 550hp Tatum desert car, that is flat out fast and handles like the best of them, and that a semi stock newer rzr or can am is hard to compete with in the desert. And yea i can handle my car, it takes leg stretch sections to reel them back in.

How wide and long is that thing? 4WD?

Ha, I forgot to add that to the list of benefits. It actually shifts gears and sounds like it's got balls!

4400 car?

We are going to the races this weekend in Reno. Those things are bad ass

Kinda wondering if one can pick up a used one when the racers are done with them. The racers are constantly upgrading

120” wheel base 90” wide S4
22” front 21” rear and that’s controlled and strapped. I’m not saying it to shit talk, just basing off the “sxs killer” portion. This era of sxs is bad ass, but yea the sound of a rapped up v8 will never be competed by a sxs

Yes, it's a 4400. You can get them after racers are done with them, which is exactly my situation. Seller wants to build a new car in a bad way. He loves this car, but he wants an upgraded chassis and everything. I guess there is some chassis builder out there who builds them all to gnat's ass specs and only sells to people he thinks are worthy. Apparently he thinks the guy I'm buying this car from is worthy. Seller's wife said he has to sell this one before building another. I'll be happy to retire it from racing and use it as my hard pack toy.

Seller was asking $38K. Not what I paid, but it for sure wasn't more than that. He wants to build a new car and was getting tired of tire kicker flakes. He's also in a difficult location to sell something like this. Who else besides me would actually fly out to Indiana to drive it and check it out?

Impossible to build a side by side with this capability for that money.

Nice car. Maybe a little too long and too wide to hang well with the SxS in the technical stuff? Not saying for sure or shit talking, but possibilities. The U4 is 113" wheelbase and 83" wide with 650HP and 40" tires. 4WD too. Coming out of turns, I can be grabbing with all four instead of just two in the rear that may already be sliding sideways.

Agreed

But that car isn’t going to win big bowl shootout top of Olds to China wall.
Great hard pack but too heavy for big dunes and missing two seats for us family guys.

Will have to talk to my contacts with a class one car what the seasonal maintenance costs are on a 4400 car.
Interesting .
