I'm hoping it will get better, but...

Let me backtrack a little for those that don't know. My wife and I have no children. We have had our beloved dog Gracie for the last 17 years and she has been our child. To say this dog consumed our life is an understatement. She is our everything. We've had her since she was 8 weeks old. Since I've been retired (aka unemployed) for the last 12 years I have literally spent 24/7 with her for those years. We have gone on a 1-2 mile walk almost every day of her life. I figured we have walked at best guess well over 7000 miles together.

Well today she left us peacefully on our couch in our house(with the vets assistance). I am so broken.:( Not looking for sympathy, maybe some empathy from other dog parents. I haven't posted anything on social media but wanted to get it off my chest at RDP...speaks volumes for the brotherhood here.

Here's the last pic from a few days ago.

Most of us have been exactly where you are, so we know what you’re going through. To lose something that’s been with you almost 1/3 of your life is nothing less than painful. Look through some old photos, reminisce with your wife about the good times with Gracie and you’ll soon have a smile on your faces.

Hang in there GRADS. :(

Bummer. Gracie was a great companion, brought a smile to my face and everyone else’s every time she was seen. Godspeed in mourning.
Thanks bud, that means a lot coming from someone that knew her. By the way that's a Bama blanket in the pic and is what they took her away in.

RIP Gracie. Had to put down my lab last year and it was hard. Think of the good times and when your ready think about adopting another dog. I adopted after the lab passed and it has worked out well.

My wife and I went for a drive today to clear our heads and coming home was tough. It was the first time in probably 35 years that I have come home to no dog in the house. We say no dogs right now but we'll see about that. I have never been able in my adult life to walk out the door, lock it and go away for the weekend....or even be spontaneous. I have always had to get a dog sitter way in advance. We made no plans for my 50th birthday in a month because of that. we might try and live and travel for a bit....just trying hard to find a silver lining tonight.

Ol Bud(weiser) was also at my side 24/7 for 12 years. I still miss him

That’s a tough one Grads.
17 years is a long time.
Our favorite and best dog was a beagle mix. Grew up with that dog for 17 years.
My Dad never got another dog after “Shorty”.

Rip Gracie.

Really sorry Greg and I know what your going through. Twice in the past few years we have had to make the choice for our long time friends (both made it too 18). You made the right choice by having the vet come to your house so you could say good by in familiar surrounding with loved ones present.

I know you’re well aware about my wife’s dog Heidi and how bad that hurt for us.
Another dog will be helpful just don’t rush it. Like wifey has said our newest found us or in her words “ Heidi sent Haley to us”.

That is a good plan. Travel around live without having to plan in advance for awhile then decide about another dog.

Sounds like she lived a good life surrounded by love ones. Dogs are simple because that’s all they really need to be happy. I’ve got two right now and even though I think I’ve got quite a few years left, I know these will be my last after they’re gone. Like you, we have no children, and have no plans to have any. These are our kids, and I already know that when they pass, I will be more broken than ever before. Run free over rainbow bridge Gracie.

Always tough to make that decision. But you knew it was time. Be content in the knowledge that you eased that dogs suffering. Sorry for your loss.

I know exactly where you are.

Back in July our senior Basset, Dee Dee (11 years), started coughing and throwing up blood. Turned out to be a severe nose bleed. Vet trip, meds and tests. thought we had it under control. Month later, 2 weeks ago she did started again. Had to go to Phoenix for CT and scope. Found a tumor in her nasal cavity, restricting her breathing and sporadic bleeding. Biopsy came back as cancer. While contacting and consulting oncologists and for records transfer, she had another bleed (only 5 days from previous). This was while on anti-bleed medicine and antibiotics. Was up with her all night last Thursday. She had difficulty breathing, heavy panting, and could not settle. We made the difficult decision that ending her pain would be the best thing for her. I held her paw as she fell gently asleep and passed peacefully.

Even though I knew it was the right thing to do, I still have trouble sleeping.

So yeah, Greg. I know right where you're at, Buddy.

RIP Gracie. I hate to think of loosing our dog. Had him since 2 months old.

He’s diabetic and I have to shoot him with insulin twice a day and give him special food.

His meds and food are about what a new car payment would be....I’d rather have the old dog.

Sorry for your loss.
Had to say goodbye to our family dog in 2013, hardest day I had in a long time.
Each day will get easier. Remember the good times.

I know the feeling well. It’s like nicks on the heart, that you feel every few heartbeats. You breathe in and you smell the faint smell. You dream and the shadows show through.

Sorry for the loss.

17 years is a great life of remembrance though, so hold those thoughts between the nicks.

Sorry to hear Grads. Feeling the void after loosing an animal can last a long time. Especially since you had your pooch for 17 yrs.I suggest to have a rescue dog instead of a new puppy as soon you feel it should be time.Son's neighbour have three rescued dogs from Mexico. They're the happiest lot I have ever seen:). I'm sure those dogs appreciate being rescued to a good home.;)

Ah fack Greg. I know you’ve mentioned a few times that the time left was limited. Sorry for your loss. I’m 100% certain that losing a close pet is harder than losing a family member.

Reason they are called Mans best friend. Hardest thing I have had to do is make that drive to the vet.

I saw a pup that looked Similar other day and thought of Gracie. Wondered how She was Rest Easy Gracie.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I have only had two dogs in my life one made it to 17 and the other will be 14 this December. I am truly dreading the inevitable. We also don't have any kids so Roxy is like our kid well, grandma now. :D

Sorry you're hurting. The attachment to our pets is a very real and close bond, and when they leave, the grief is crushing.

The silver lining is the care and love you gave and the reciprocation that Gracie gave to you and your wife.

It’s never easy to lose a dog. No matter how much you think you have mentally prepared it’s a huge kick to the nuts.
