Changed the rub rail to white and paint to match graphics. Things we do in the winter when we are bored.

That looks great! really a big step up.

What are the details on the process? Was this a DYI deal or did you have shop do it?

Thanks. I did the work myself but I have been in the auto repair business for many years.
I sanded the area to be painted with 400 grit then sprayed adhesion promoter before color and clear.
I don’t have the white screw heads done yet but I also sand blasted the screw heads and painted them to match.

It was already an awesome looking rig - if you can't do it yourself, you can't afford it!!! Looks fantastic, but it makes the fenders manditory everywhere!!!!!

I replaced the black rub rail with a new white one so the front where the cleat is should be ok.
Took out the interior to change the gas vent line. Tired of it puking down the side of the boat. Also don’t want it to stain the new white rub rail

Is that a second Mach 22 in the background?

When you switched to the white rub rail, where did you get it, and how did you form it around the corners and turns and such?

I Just picked up this one for a little summer fun, I would like to do the same color match dealio.

Why yes it is. A twin like yours. Congrats I’ve been eyeing that one.

I need to check where the rub rail came from. If you aren’t replacing yours you wont need to bend it just taking it off to paint. But if you do replace all you have to do is heat it up a little bit with a heat gun. You will need another person to help hold while you heat. I would suggest practicing with your old straight pieces before trying the new ones.

Yours will look awesome with paint to match rub rail.

You’re the painter, but couldn’t it be painted while on the boat? Or is it simply easier to remove and paint?

KMG Boats (Kevin) paints them on the boat. He gets mine in March for a repair.
He painted all of Ultra’s rub rails when JW owned Ultra, all where painted while on the boat. Just have to use a ton of protective wrap.

I have done them both ways. With the outboard, the back almost had to come off. It was nice not masking off the boat this way. There is pros and cons either way.

Mine is half cap with ss rail on sides, no intent to change in mine. But the question was more for others thinking of doing it, as frankly this seems to be a semi inexpensive yet extremely nice upgrade to do during the winter.

As a paint guy you should toss up an approximate quote for doing the work I’ll bet you’ll have 3-7 more to do before season starts as your work came out so bitchen and clean.

Thanks! I wished I lived closer to most people on the forum. If I did I would do that and probably be advertising to do gel work also. Unfortunately I am in Ohio. (for now)

Convincor is being modest - he's the best gelcoater/painter east of the Grand Canyon and his work is incredable. MAD hand eye skills. He's done work for me - now I don't want to let anybody else touch it

Yeah me either but I figure it ain’t eating anything. I’ll keep it till I get an offer that is worth my while. And the way the used boat market is going I want more now than I did lol.

I’m sure that is the problem. It just adds to the cost of the boat. But I don’t feeel bad for you west coasters every time I buy a used boat I have to travel :D

I think that ALL used boats in the condition of this one have gone up in value in the last 8 months. Look at the pricing of the new market and most boats like this one look cheap!!! I built a custom 22 Daytona in 2003 for around $70,000. That boat now is litterly double!!!! Convincor's 22 is as clean as a new demo boat, killer stereo, cowl matches perfectly - there isn't a nicer one anywhere in the country.

I used Marine Tex to fill the holes. The rub rail was almost dead on the same, except for being white.

Looks great... I'm tackling the same project right now, I'm curious as to what sealant type you used to cover the old screw holes, and did you use the same type for the rail itself?
