Looks like another "No Wake Zone" on the river was just started.. From the gas line up to the entrance to Topock Marina there are buoy's set up with a 5 mph speed limit posted on them.

It is a matter of time that whole stretch is no wake. I am not joking - lots of places back east are like this and it sucks.

I strongly disagree with this. It needs to be an on / off with no speed limits. Once you open that door for speed guns and limits it is all over for that body of water. Right now look at the number of no wake buoyed off zones implemented in the last 15 years. I will name a couple recent.

* speed alley
* devil elbow
* sandbar and copper holiday restrictions
* mouth of topock and LHC dredge
* I guess this new one overnight by the bridge

The no wake at Devils elbow has been increased in size slowly but surely we will be transformed and we will accept our battery powered droneboats..

Does the city get involved with this? Seems enough of these no wake zones and it becomes considerably less enjoyable to drive to havasu. Cant be good for business. How about more buoys to mark lanes for trafic? I can understand a speedlimit, but slowing to 35 will generate more erosion, I would think. 50 mph is better, and is a safe speed for most of that stretch. Or maybe government just doesn't want us to boat there any more and this is there way of taking it away from us, one piece at a time.

So is it still shallow going from the Lake to the river in Havasu toward the sandbar where they dredged or do you have to "know" which way to go without bottoming out on a sandbar?

Wonder if it was for the OUI checkpoint they were going to have today, but cancelled due to the heat.
Heading that direction tomorrow and hoping they are gone

Look at what? Post a link if you're looking at something on the internet!

There have been long time restrictions on the river above Willow Beach. Open to powerboats over 60hp only on Saturday and Sunday from Memorial Day thru labor Labor Day weekend. Been that way for years.

Is there something new?

Never did like the restriction that we can no longer take our 60 hp+ boats above Willow Beach on weekdays during the prime summer season. Similar restrictions could take place else where. NEW . .? "Been that way for years" - I recall many prior years when that restriction was NOT in place.

I see people weaving, posturing and whatnot on that section all for not. You can just crank straight through as long as you do not completely overshoot it. I have never been through the 60K mini whatever they buoyed off by the island.

I am just wondering if they are set up temporally for the check point they always have on the weekend prior to holiday weekends?

The second a posted speed limit is enacted other than no wake on that waterway the performance boater is screwed. Boating and offroading are two of the last relatively wide open freedoms that are being restricted and attacked.

I think they did a pretty good job with the dredging on the CA side in that area in question, it may be a 5mph zone but you can pass through with confidence if you don't know the whole "zig-zag" line. Not sure how deep it is but it's plenty deep..

Good point.^^^^

I don't like restrictions either, but the no wake entrance to the gorge is just an option no one has to use it.

As far as Devils Elbow, a sand bar was developing on the So. East corner of the hard right turn pushing all the north bound boats to the center of the travel area and making it somewhat narrow. IMHO it was just matter of time before there was a high speed head on at the turn.

There were several collisions there that led to the no wake zone. It's a very nice area to idle through or hang out now, IMO.

You think this has nothing to do with Topock reopening? I blew through it yesterday until another boater let me know it was there.

Still around today and the signs look brand new. Based on placement I think they are staying for a period of time.

Hopefully gone after the 4th of July weekend!

We go there all the time, kinda nice not to have your drive pounded into the sand all day.:thumbsup

The No Wake zone at I-40 is permenant. With topack marina opening, and all of the accidents right there it was inevitable. It was too dangerous for boats coming out of topack marina cove with the turn in the river there, so the no wake section was put in. I have a feeling it will be heavily patrol'd for awhile especially over the 4th!

The no wake sucks, but I must say, we were coming under the bridge headed north, just as we get to Topock a boat going south cuts right across my bow headed into topock. Was close enough I had to come off plane and change course. We were pretty pissed they could not wait to till we passed. I imagine this will get much worse once its opened as many people will be coming from Pirates to Topock. This stuff would not be needed if people would get there heads out of there ass and just chill.

Here's the official announcement about the new "no wake" zone. It's here to stay.

Southwest Region (Arizona ● New Mexico ● Oklahoma ●Texas) http://southwest.fws.gov

For Release: June 20, 2013
Contacts: Havasu NWR (760) 326-3853 or
Lake Havasu National Wildlife Refuge Complex at: (928) 667-4144

--------------Safety Zone Proposed on Colorado River at I-40 -----------

In response to concerns expressed by both the Arizona Game & Fish Department and the Lake Havasu Marine Association, the Lake Havasu National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Complex is establishing a safety zone for boaters traveling through the Havasu NWR at the Interstate 40 Bridge. The safety zone will be established by creating a No Wake zone in the Colorado River approximately 700 feet north and 900 feet south of the I-40 Bridge, using two boundary lines of regulatory buoys. Watercraft operators will be required to be at a wake-less speed throughout this zone, which will include the waterway to and around the Topock 66 Marina.

The expansion of commercial development at the Topock 66 Marina is expected to greatly increase the number of vessels entering and exiting the river at that venue. Reducing the speed of boats at that junction is anticipated to significantly reduce the likelihood of boat collisions.

Can somebody post up a picture of a map where they think the no wake will spread to, I image it will start at that little bend south of I-40 but how far north?

I am no fan of government intervention but I enjoy the ride at Devils Elbow with the no wake zone. When we went thru the I-40 no wake zone this past Monday it was fine as well. That turn could be dicey with everyone running on the CA side of the turn and even a member here, as posted above, had an issue with a clueless boater; and Topock is not fully open yet.

Yep...won't be long the whole entire river and lake will be a no wake zone. Give em an inch, and they'll never stop!

Exactly. 10 years ago how many times did you have to lift between Moabi Channel and Thompson Bay Channel? How many times today? How many do you think in 5 years? It is not good.
