Looks like summer is coming to an end. I bought a 540 off a well known member on here. It has 625 hp 635 tq. It’s going into the shop for the motor swap. It currently has a Merc 496 with 220 hours. Nothing wrong with the motor, just want to go faster. It has the Bravo-1 outdrive with Imco shorty. Do I need to upgrade the outdrive, sea strainer etc etc. I would like it to be as trouble free as a boat can be. Thanks for any input.

What's the plan for the 496? I may be interested if you're selling

Hydraulic steering, have mmw do the upper and she should run great safely for a long time. That boat is light enough the Worx Upper will last forever as long as it’s not beat on, and you do drive fluid every 15-20 hours.

We have a stock Bravo 1 behind a 540 that makes 720hp, and it's in a 26 Howard cat which is much heavier than your boat. I'd say you'll be fine if you drive it reasonably, but you definitely should upgrade to hydraulic steering

You ,”should” do all the above. Because you will want to use that power. Do it as it breaks or do it now. Your choice.
