Just curious has anyone experienced any issues with the new 300/400r mercs yet? How reliable have they been and what’s the repair experience been like?$$$$$

I've got almost 45 hours on my 400 so far. All I've done was check the oil.

I just go boating so far.

Manual says an oil change at 100 hours, but I'm planning on doing it at 50. Oils cheap. (Its a 100 bucks for the 2 gallons plus filter at my local marina)

I plan on replacing the impeller also. This channel is shallow as hell, and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Wouldn't matter if it was still the opti I took off, I'd be replacing the impeller anyways.

I haven't had to buy a gallon of two stroke oil all summer either. The opti used around a gallon per tank of fuel, so theres that savings, not to mention the pita to actually fill the reservoir. Loved ha ing to keep a rag on board to wipe my hands afte dealing with that mess.

Fuel economy is significantly better than the opti also. I typically drive around 45-50mph, and I'm seeing almost 5 mpg.

I cant find anything to bitch about, other than an hour ago, my son and I were leaving a restaurant up river. My buddy John asked me if it was running? Wtf, that thing a hybrid?

:p:p:p

I'm pleased with my purchase.
:)

What’s the back story on this if you don’t mind sharing

I'll check the hours but it's not many on a 400R on a pontoon
Had a recent service
It's not the oil drain plug
That's the only story I have

ive got ~71 hrs on a 300R and besides a broken prop shaft its been golden. I did change the engine oil around 50hrs because I think 100hrs is too much. I routinely change the gear oil and replace the little o-rings under the drain/fill bolts.

I saw a 300 verado, hole punched through on the lower unit
brand new. Not sure the cause but didn't look like any oil in it

Prop shaft issues are a common complaint but merc has been standing behind the product and repairing. Merc offers a n amazing warranty package for a marine motor. Take advantage of that.

I noticed on the new 450's they changed to a 1 piece shaft. I'd imagine that would resolve the prop shaft issues the 400 and 300 have had. Anybody have any idea of the new 400 and 300's are coming with the new shaft or if they are upgrading the failures to the new shaft?

Rumor I heard was, they used all the 2 piece shafts, and put 1 piece in everything since....

That all said. My engine was built in march, and I have a 2 piece....

I also have a 3 year warranty, that has 2.5 years left, so if I'm going to break it.........o_Oo_Oo_O

A new service bulletin is on it's way to being published. The exhaust cam likes to jump time on all the straight 6s when the engine gets turned backwards, especially when done by hand like would happen during a leak down test.

Compression numbers will look normal. Leak down will also look normal. Engine will perform decent but not great and the engine won't want to idle for more than about 30 seconds

.. I've been fixing those since those motors came out and for whatever reason people want leakdown numbers on a 250 hour outboard on the back of a fishing/pontoon boat.
