I've done side machining for the old mans engineering firm for years on a 1099.. Every year I get killed in taxes (aside from the point, but another factor).

Well now I have 4 or 5 companies hitting me up. All of them started as a friend asking if I could just help them real quick with something and have evolved into people dropping off multiple prints with 2 day lead times. So it's time for me to go get a business license so I can get paid on some of this stuff becusae helping a friend is one thing, but doing a couple grand in machining in 2 days for some company is an entirely different matter.

In the future I'll probably end up doing some boat parts again for various mfg's as things evolve, but I don't think the name should be marine themed only.

One I came up with last night was "Behind the 8 Machining" Not sure if you've ever heard the expression before "Behind the 8 ball" but it means your in a tough spot, or screwed more or less. I'm certainly not stuck on it though becuase it's long, and not very catchy..

Any suggestions for names?

Rack em up Machining...

The pool thing was just becuase it happened to coincide with a tough spot..

I really want something that reflects "Last Chance for gas 200 miles" :D

People typically hit me up when they need it done now.. like right now and they don't have time to wait for a quote, paperwork, P.O.'s, etc.. I look at a part, build it in my head rattle off the 1st # that comes to mind and they say yeah or ney.. To date nobody has said ney..

Typical lead times for machining are a couple weeks for a shop. I'll usually turn things next day or two days.. 3 - 4 days if it's a bigger job then a couple of parts or something extra ordinarily complex.

Not good for marketing. Seems like you are marketing toiward the people that dropped the ball, and you specialize in stuff that needs to be done last minute. You don't want to portay that image, it'll drive you nuts with all the people asking for last minute shit.

That kinda is the market I specialize in though for these types of jobs. People can't wait 2 - 3 weeks. They can only way 2 - 3 days, sometimes even same day?

RDS Machining...

Note the lack of apostrophe, that would be because it's really short for RD Sux. :point:beer:D

Figured that RD Sux Machining wouldn't lend itself to business very well, this way it seems like you're calling it RD's Machining and only the well versed Hotboat Forum member would know any different. :D

Good luck,

Jordy's Consulting Firm. :D

At Designer Marine Interiors way back when, they had an imprint on the back of the biZ cards.

"Poor planning on your part does not mean an emergency on mine"..

Friggin boat dealers! :D

A simple name is good.

I used to use 'Rush' Machine shop in LA.
His speciality was shafts. Lot's of fan and pump shafts disintregrate daily and the MFGs want weeks, perhaps months to ship replacements.
"The bigger, the slower".

He gave his machinists all the overtime they wanted. Some guys are overtime whores so that was easy, and it was all good.

He usually could accept work in a 24 hour window and get it back in 12 hrs.
Little favors like a huge stock of bearings on hand (or order from someone who does) he'd press on the shaft, you're quickly good to go. Made him a standout. Didn't charge all that much more either.

I say: 8 ball. Comic logo with wings on a billet looking ball.
With a very small "Behind the" tatoo'd style on the ball.

The only problem with "8 Ball" are the illicit drug connotation that goes along with it. I like the design idea, though, Ross.

Make it sound professional, do not use any context to drugs, or jokes, if your serious, use a serious name. That business (that I am in) is driven by a lot of old timers in some cases, and they wont dial a name that doesnt sound serious.

Try "SUX MACHING WORKS" kidding.....

How RD machine :beer

I spent months fretting over a name years back. I just could not hook something I liked that fit. So I took the easy way out. My business (screen name sans the OC) is just my last name.

I would advise against just initials in a name. Like RDM (RiverDave Machine)To easy to forget just what the letters stand for from a first time customer standpoint, although it's very popular in the Marine Ind. DCB, DCM, and the like.

You could always be the Co. at the end. DaveCo Machine but it sounds very 70's.

All the "Accurate, Precision, examples are used over and over.

Harder than one thinks.

OCM Oregon Custom Marine. Initals are very popular boating related.

I kinda wanted to stay away from the initials.. but I gotta admit with USC not far away, and the underlying "Up Shit Creek" machining.. LOL I like it. :D

the words "custom" "rapid" etc.. are used in every shop, and I think are played out 6 ways to sunday.

As silly as it sounds, I'd stay away from anything that ties you to one particular brand, such as USC Machining. Even though it wouldn't necessarily have anything to do with the school, there are people out there that are so true to their school that they would go out of their way to not do business with someone who has any hint of being affiliated with a rival school. ;)

Well I needed it kinda Jonny on the spot, and out of all of them that I had read on here, the only one that came to mind was the original one. "Behind the 8" so that's what I went with..

I do appreciate all the suggestions though! :) It definately gave me alot to think about. I don't expect this business is going to take off to be some big company or something, just something so I can collect for my side jobs, and maybe have some tax relief.

Well if and when I figure out how I'm going to make my millions I won't use "behind' in the name. ;)

You're customer base might expand beyond the last minute guys; and, a name that implies getting things done quick could imply that it is not done with quality in mind. Sort of like the saying: Fast, Quality, Inexpensive, pick two.

I say pick something that really doesn't imply anything. Your reputation for getting the job done right at a decent turn around time will supersede any name.

Once you get a business license and resale # you'll have all kinds of fun stuff to deal with.
You'll still pay your income tax but will have to do it every quarter. And you will just love filling out all that bs for your sales tax. Even if everything is for resale you still have to fill out the paper work. I'm lucky that my wife takes care of all the bookwork for us.

But from what I see one of the main reasons a lot of small biz fail is because they don't keep up on that stuff.

Are you going to be whateveryoucomeupwith, Inc. ?? If so then you get to do even more paper work and pay even more taxes.

I sometimes wish I kept it to cash only on the DL.

BTW, sales tax payments were due yesterday.

RD your decision but I don't think alot of Wyatt Earp fans are looking for Machining, besides more people like Tombstone much better. I dunno the name does fit the situation; you really are behind the 8 now. :eek:fftopic Or is it?

What does wyatt earp have to do with it?

Behind the 8 has been another way of saying "tough spot" for as long as I can remember (even with non pool players?) Hell I was watching TV the other day and a financial commercial came on, and they used the phrase "Behind the 8 ball"

I think you might be thinking of Aces n eights which was the hand Wild Bill Hicock was holding when he was shot.. "Dead mans hand"
