SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea threatened Wednesday to wipe the United States off the map as Washington and its allies watched for signs the regime will launch a series of missiles in the coming days.

Off China's coast, a U.S. destroyer was tailing a North Korean ship suspected of transporting illicit weapons to Myanmar in what could be the first test of U.N. sanctions passed to punish the nation for an underground nuclear test last month.

The Kang Nam left the North Korean port of Nampo a week ago with the USS John S. McCain close behind. The ship, accused of transporting banned goods in the past, is believed bound for Myanmar, according to South Korean and U.S. officials.

The new U.N. Security Council resolution requires member states to seek permission to inspect suspicious cargo. North Korea has said it would consider interception a declaration of war and on Wednesday accused the U.S. of seeking to provoke another Korean War.

"If the U.S. imperialists start another war, the army and people of Korea will ... wipe out the aggressors on the globe once and for all," the official Korean Central News Agency said.

The warning came on the eve of the 59th anniversary of the start of the three-year Korean War, which ended in a truce in 1953, not a peace treaty, leaving the peninsula in state of war.

The U.S. has 28,500 troops in South Korea to protect against an outbreak of hostilities.

Tensions have been high since North Korea launched a long-range rocket in April and then conducted its second underground atomic test on May 25.

Reacting to U.N. condemnation of that test, North Korea walked away from nuclear disarmament talks and warned it would fire a long-range missile.

North Korea has banned ships from the waters off its east coast starting Thursday through July 10 for military exercises, Japan's Coast Guard said.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Wednesday that the North may fire a Scud missile with a range of up to 310 miles (500 kilometers) or a short-range ground-to-ship missile with a range of 100 miles (160 kilometers) during the no-sail period.

A senior South Korean government official said the no-sail ban is believed connected to North Korean plans to fire short- or mid-range missiles. He spoke on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.

U.S. defense and counterproliferation officials in Washington said they also expected the North to launch short- to medium-range missiles. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence.

South Korea will expedite the introduction of high-tech unmanned aerial surveillance systems and "bunker-buster" bombs in response to North Korea's provocations, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper said, citing unidentified ruling party members.

Meanwhile, a flurry of diplomatic efforts were under way to try getting North Korea to return to disarmament talks.

Russia's top nuclear envoy, Alexei Borodavkin, said after meeting with his South Korean counterpart that Moscow is open to other formats for discussion since Pyongyang has pulled out of formal six-nation negotiations.

In Beijing, top U.S. and Chinese defense officials also discussed North Korea. U.S. Defense Undersecretary Michele Flournoy was heading next to Tokyo and Seoul for talks.

South Korea has proposed high-level "consultations" to discuss North Korea with the U.S., Russia, China and Japan.

IBTM (In Before The Move) :D

More like they're nuts. They want to provoke Obama into making a move against them and/or their ship suspected of carrying weapons to Myanmar (Burma). What the nuts in North Korea don't realize is Obama doesn't have the backbone necessary to take on a rogue state like North Korea (or Iran).

This guy has been stirring the pot something awful in the past recent months. Somewhere along the news I read, there was an article about him having a missile capable of hitting our west coast. Me living about 4-5 miles from the port, I'm pretty sure my life would be seriously affected. I'm actually a little concerened about this whack job. :thumbsdown

Perhaps we should threaten him with going after him IN HIS country and fuck him up just like Saddam Hussein. Shit we don't even need any justified charges........shit all we need is some good allegations. :thumbsup :D

My thinking would be to throw a little nuke on their launch pad as they shoot their missle...Whoops, they musta had an accident! China, Japan, Russia, would wink, wink, nod, nod, say no more...

The only problem with punching this ahole in the nose is that Seoul, South Korea is right next door (all of South Korea) with many millions of innocent people (plus our troops). They would be the first victims in a clash that could rapidly escalate into Korean War II which would be devastating for the South Koreans and for the world's economy.

Plus Obama doesn't have the stones for any of this. He's a "peace at all costs" guy just like Jimmy Carter was (is).

I say we take that Boeing laser 747 we designed to shoot missles out of the sky and next time Kim Jung Il steps out on his balcony he gets the worlds worst sunburn and turns into dust in about .4 seconds.

We can totally deny anything ever even happened.

Just blow the missle off of the launch pad. Everytime they try another launch blow it off the pad before it ever gets a chance to leave the ground.

China will bring them to heel before they do any real damage.
They are just being entertained by their rabid dog for now, but won't let it actually bite anyone.

I spent 1953-54 in Korean front as a foot soldier. It was terrible and thousands of our troops suffered severly. These people are like animals and fear nothing.
If we have 28000 troops they have hundred of thousands. I hope this works itself out. I hope none of you youngsters have to be involved in this and suffer as I and thousands did.

I agree... N. Korea doesn't even concern me.. China scares the shit out of me.

If they get involved, and not on our side then it's very possible that we wouldn't win.. :( A lot of people think that not to be the case. Let me tell you an actual fact. They have more "people" in their country then their currently is "bullets" in the U.S. No shit..

I think Nobama is ending funding for that plane. I'm not sure but I believe that is the case, I'd have to look into it.

http://blogs.physicstoday.org/politics/2009/04/dod-cuts-missile-defense-fundi.html

Gates proposed canceling the second airborne laser (ABL) prototype aircraft. The ABL consists of a Boeing 747 modified to hold a giant chemical laser that is designed to shoot down missiles from a distance of 600 nautical miles. "We will keep the existing aircraft and shift the program to an R&D effort," said Gates. "The ABL program has significant affordability and technology problems and the program's proposed operational role is highly questionable."

I think the NO KO's are the ones to be scared of... If you were scared of Bin Ladin or Saddaam, more than Kim Jung, it's like comparing the smell of domesticated cat shit to a wild lion.... The No. Koreans have no mind set or fear.

China doesnt want to fuck with us because they dont want to lose the WalMart, Harley & Briggs n' Stratton Accounts....

N Korea in nothing but mountains and mountains. Hundreds of thousands literly are stationd there. HOW DO YOU FIGHT THAT, NOT VERY EASY.So hope for the best and the powers to be make the right decisions.

If I was going to screw with anyone it would be Obama because his is a unkown entity with no track record and appears weak. So these N. Koreans are smart and they are exploiting Obama.

Our government is in communication with China and Russia and collectively we together with them will deal with this guy and keep him contained by making concessions to him.

I dont know but it sounds good.

The Pentagon shrugged off a threat from North Korea Wednesday to wipe the United States off the map.

"I don't even know how to respond to that. It's silliness," said Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell."For what and with what?"

China holds the key because they provide Kim and his crew with the fuel, food, and $ to live well, and the weapons to keep the masses in check. China does not want a war on the penninsula again because they know that the masses in N.K. will flee north, handing them an enourmous refugee problem.
With China recently signing on to the UN slap-on-the wrist against N.K., one must wonder which of the 3 scenarios is actually taking place.
1) China is losing control of Kim, 'cause he is getting nutty. (Very Bad)
2) China wants to send a message to Kim to settle down, and it is not working. (Worse)
3) China is afraid Kim is going to do something really, really stupid and the next step will be nuclear weapons in Japan's D.F. and in South Korea. (boom)

With so many potential tripwires around the world armed and ready to go, I am very much afraid the day will soon come where we look back upon the stability of the Cold War Era with fondness.
Things are not going to get better any time soon folks.
Plan for it.
