Hi All
Been dealing with this knee issue for 9 weeks and finally got the results. I have an orthopedic appointment Monday, and they always like to cut, anyone with any experience and suggestions as I walk into the butchers Den?
I’m 49 and in decent shape, just bad pivot on the leg during softball drills.

Arthroscopy provides a simple fix with a short recovery time and minimal post surgery therapy. Ignoring it or trying alternate treatments like stem cell, collagen, steroid or Synvisc injections, or anything labeled "holistic" or "natural" just allow more degradation of the miniscus, unnecessary pain, and spend time and money.

Trust me on this one. I am unfortunately an expert on knee issues. Been dealing with them for 50 years.

I had a small tear in my meniscus. Cortizone shot didn't work. Had surgery with no issues. Back to work the next day. No PT. Played golf 4 weeks later. Glad I did it.

In the 90's, I had 5 different meniscus tears. Each time, the doc would grind the surface smooth. We'll, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to understand that with each grind, you are losing the cushion between bones. Yep, I ended up with full bilateral knee replacements.
I hear the new technique is to micro stitch the tears, rather than grinding. This will avoid a later knee replacement.
If possible, have a consultation with Dr. Kharrazi from the sports medicine specialists at Kerlan Jobe. They are located in LA, Pasadena and Anaheim, in the big brown building just north of Angel Stadium.

An Orthopedic clinic out here wanted to cut and trim.

I went to UCLA and they said that too radical, injected a lube with pain killer instead.
Every molecule in my body lit up when she injected.
Not for wussies.

Takes a week to take effect, but is really good.

This. I had my left knee done. Dr. Metros Escondido. He's the best. I'll tell the funny story afterwards. Mine was partially torn. I have an area of bone on bone. But it ain't give out yet. 67. All OG parts. Well I got snipped.

That's a great story! I nicknamed the Nurse, " The Predator!" !°°!🤣

Dominate. It's a No biggie procedure.

The day of my surgery my wife made the downstairs couch into a temporary bed. After a few hours of trying to sleep. I went upstairs to my bed with no problem. Jut took it one step at a time. 😉

Had the same thing and went for the arthroscopy. I was back to normal is 2 weeks which amazed me. The pain before that was excruciating.

Knee’s been bothering me for a few months, mostly nagging dull pain around the clock. I found out on Monday I have osteoarthritis of right knee; and Acute lateral meniscus tear of right knee. Doc recommended cortisone shots and some PT.

I got a call yesterday from the doc saying that my insurance denied the treatment, because they consider the injections as “experimental” treatment. WTF.

I have Anthem Blue Cross PPO.

I had the same meniscus tear / osteoarthritis. The cortisone shot only worked for a couple days. PT didnt help either. Surgery was what helped me be pain free. I have BCBS PPO also.

Much like you I tore my meniscus when I was 30 playing baseball. Dealt with it off & on for 20 years. Then when exercising one day doing wind sprints I heard a POP. Immediately I couldn't walk on it without cringing in pain so I went to an Orthopedic Surgeon, had an MRI and it clearly showed a tear in my meniscus. Had the 20 minute arthroscopic surgery on a Friday and I was back at work on Monday walking freely and virtually pain free. While the surgeon was in there he also found 3 small cartilage tears and he removed those as well. The knee has been solid for over 10 years now post surgery. I would do it again - no question!!! Just an FYI - You need to do the Physical Therapy to get your full range of motion back. Thats probably the worst part of the process.

Where are you headed? I know you’re in the area so we use Garey Orthopedic out of Casa Colina.

Just an Update..

Had Surgery on 1/28. Repaired the Meniscus. Been on Toe Touch only and on crutches and in a full brace for two weeks so far. PT started two days after. Swelling on knee was unchanged until Monday when you could see my knee getting close to normal thankfully. I am hoping I can get clearance to drive after my two week follow up Thursday so I can driver to work. Not sure why the Surgeon had me only on toe touch no weight for the two weeks where others on here were able to walk right after.

Sounds like it depends on severity of the situation along with the person. I was scheduled to have procedure done to one of my knees and at the same time i started taking an active approach to rehabing it on the daily, it helped but slow going, allowed me to workout (squats) but sometimes well up and set me back but the set backs were becoming shorter and further apart and running would set it off as well. I've been injecting peptides for 3 weeks now and what a night and day difference in just the 3 weeks. Give peptides a go, nothing to lose but little bit of $$ before deciing to get cut open.

Hang in there Bear. They let me walk out and go back to work. Hindsight I coulda benefitted from ah, not. I like your Doc's safety first strategy.
I was @205. Bear may weigh more?

I healed ok, but I was miserable. Heard a crack, chills hit me. Checked at Doc's?
" You're fine. Suit up get back out there."

Enjoy every minute of your time off. Rest easy. Heal well.

Appreciate the words my man.... I am enjoying seeing the kids get up for school and the whole morning process as I start work at 3 am daily and get to miss this morning Mom/Kid Shuffle. Spending time with the wife is cool, But hearing the clancking of the brace as you are shagging is a Boner Killer.

Glad you are progressing, stay at it.
I just had TKR surgery(30th,was supposed to be 28th) and was weight bearing immediately after the procedure with a walker. Just finished my 2nd day of intense outpatient PT an hour ago, they about brought tears to my eyes.
Lets compare scars!😂 20250207_152351.jpg 20250207_152535.jpg

Bear;

I had my right knee scoped to repair a torn meniscus about 6 years ago, surgery was OK and recovery was as expected.
When you need surgery you need it, the pain sucked and I was glad to have it repaired.

Ziggy, please keep us updated on how you do with the new knee. My left knee isn't right and the doc is sending me for MRI.
Naturally, it has sucked for a couple of years, and yes, I have ignored it...but it is time I guess...wife says so anyway LOL.

Whats amazing is how far the surgeries and the after care has come. In '73 I was a junior in high school and went to Riverside Raceway for my one and only motorcycle race. Guy got sideways next to me and T-boned my knee into the tank. Tore the meniscus and some other minor damage. Hardest part was driving home in my '56 pick-up which was at that time a stick. After the surgery I was in a cast from my crotch to my ankle, recovery took a while. Fast forward 30 years and I hyperextended the left knee, didn't know a knee could bend that far backwards. Tore that one up pretty good but they had me up on the leg the next day after surgery. Have had several friends with knee replacements and same thing, they're up and walking next day.

My neighbor had TKR at Kaiser recently. I drove him in at 9AM, he walked into surgery at Noon, and walked to my car at 4PM. The Physical Therapist was knocking at his door the next morning at 8AM for his first PT.

Just 12 years ago, my TKR was 2 days in the hospital, a week on Oxy's while laying in bed, and PT for 4 months, starting 3 weeks later.

Amazing medical advances!

My first knee surgery in '74 was similar. Back then they just opened you up and cut out the entire miniscus. I was in the hospital for ten days and the pain was as bad as my 35 years later TKR.

Had a 3rd of mine removed 10 years ago and it wasn't too bad, I didn't read all of this, but it sounds like this is round 2 for you?
I stepped wrong off a stair a couple of days ago when the boat made a hard move and felt instant pain on the opposite side of the original tear. 😢

I tore the meniscus in my right knee trying to load a dirt bike in the bed of my truck by myself. When the bike was halfway up the loading ramp I heard a POP. My useless twat stepdaughter couldn’t even take me to the hospital because she doesn’t like hospitals. I had to drive myself to the E.R. in excruciating pain.

About two weeks later I had orthoscopic surgery and two days after that I was walking on it. Within two months I was running again. That was 20 years ago and it’s been fine since.

Just had my meniscus surgery on 2/5
I currently braced up and no weight for 6 weeks. Saying possible 3-6 months out of work. I completely separated the left inner side. They had to drill and attach it to the bone. Hence the no weight. Takes longer to heal where stitches up. Pain has been minimal. I wear a hinge brace on the opposite knee to protect it. You are gonna stress it big time.

I ditched my walker for a walking stick in the last few days, today is day 15 post surgery.

Just had mine done yesterday down here in the OC. Knee kept buckling and locking out of place. Went in and ended up not being able to salvage meniscus tear due to past injuries. Ended up cutting out around 60% - sounds like other than long distance running days being over I can get back to all other sports at least! Good luck with all your recoveries
