This happened to a customer of mine last Sunday afternoon. A big storm came up the guy struck ground made it to Swallow Bay and sunk on the beach. Some of you may recall this was the boat listed last Saturday on Craigslist for 50K it’s an old Apache with a blower motor in it and a TRS drive and to top it all off he had no insurance.

That sucks. At least he made it to shore. Blower motor should be salvageable.

Mead is big water when the weather turns shitty. Those that aren't aware of that, will find out the hard way.

Years ago I was there with my flatbottom and my dad had his v bottom v-drive and another buddy in his 19 foot jet all small hotrods. We were having a great day but you could see in the distance the clouds were turning black. I swear no more than 30 minutes had went buy and the ranger came through the sandy cove on the PA telling everyone to get to the marina because of the wind that was coming. Well needless to say all the big ass boats that were in the cove with us bailed while im trying to get everything loaded up and into the flatty. My dad goes relax we are just going to stay here and ride it out on the beach we will never make it back to the marina in time, it will go away just as fast as it comes. Sure as shit it came in hard and blew all our shit all over the place. You could see out on the lake the swells were huge but our boats were fairly protected in the cove and like dad said it blew through in like an hour. We would of lost all 3 boats trying to get to the marina.

In the 70's and early 80's we went to Mead a lot. Most of the time we camped in Vegas at the Stardust (Camperland) and got to the lake before 8:00am each day. It took 2 trips getting our stuff to our day camp which was fairly close to the marina and we would get off the lake by 3:00pm. We have 5 in our family and our boat was an 18 foot flat bottom. The afternoon, wind blown water was no good for skiing.

Been on mead many times in bad weather, sometimes it passes quick but sometimes its there to stay for awhile. Camped overnight in a dog leg cove with my sprint a few years back, started out super nice weather, wind storm blew in around midnight and ended up sleeping (trying to anyway) in the bottom of the boat. Just knew if i got wet time to get up and see whats going on, was a long night but no damage. Waves over the bow quite a few times, No way could we have made it to the marina. Tried this again in my 20 spectra, same shit happened. Needless to say, no more camping on Mead.

We have camped Mead since 1986. Have trips with amazing weather, and some with this type of weather. Always camp at middle point with protection.

Some of the best memories though as well as some ohhhhh shit that was hairy moments.

I remember one 4th of July trip it would rain most of the day, then stop. So we were like sweet let's stay. Repeated this the whole trip. Was cool to see that much rain.

100 percent the best memories of my life.

Oh ive also had some really fun trips overnight as well, but the last couple times turned out not to be. Mead is my local stomping grounds besides the river, just have to really watch the weather on the overnighters!

I would have liked to have seen the Apache before it sank.

What’s he going to do with it now? Sell it? Fix it?

Salvage it then part it out. Boat had a soft transom to start with.

who would insure a 1000hp 33 yr old boat, and what do you think it would cost? 2k per month?
Exactly what he ran into when I asked him. Hell im not far off of that 28 years old and 700 h.p. 480 a year

Nice. Had an 84 in orange/red/burgundy with a little supercharged 350. Put around 600 hrs on it, good times.

It was not a 1000 hp engine and it had a TRS drive on that was bone stock.

I know. That is why I posted it as a joke in the cash in hand wtb thread. Special Bravo built to Race!!!!

Any idea of the year ? We (By 'we' I mean my dad, me a kid spectator) ski raced there in 56', they won the Overton Arm race in a new 18' SBC powered plywood Higgins utility, barely beating out their recently sold previous 19' "Racing" Chris Craft.
Having lost all my pics and 8mm films in a fire, I'm just thrilled when you post yours --- Huge Thanks !!

We had the same warning back in early 90’s ... but it was almost too late to get back from Sandy Point to Temple Bar ... I wanted to get back cuz I had a 20 footer and 2 little kids on board ... it got very rough ... I ended up closely following a big SeaRay very slowly back behind his smooth water but still had some water coming over the bow sometimes ... very scary. So ... because of that one experience I seem to always start to think about getting off the water by 2 pm ... cuz it seemed that the weather if it was going to go bad was always later in the afternoon.

I would guess 73ish looking at the boats. It was likely a ski race event.

Most likely the 50/75 miler. 75 miles on sat and 50 miler on Sunday. That and the marathons at clear lake were huge events.

Same program in 56' --- 75 mile Overton on Sat and 50 mile large oval in the Boulder Basin on Sunday. Even as a kid I recall logistics being a challenge back in the 50's with limited local (Vegas/Henderson) resources. Needing a part for the boat after winning the Overton run on Sat, meant somebody had to drive to LA and back, then work on the boat in the early AM to get it ready for Sunday, boat ran like shit on Sunday :(
