Yes, this is an anomalous incident. The lines are normally quick there for the most part. I think lots of lifts were shut down due to wind, and if you are on the far side of the mountain, taking this chair is the only way to get high enough up the hill to ski back to main lodge.

The best day at Mammoth is Super Bowl Weekend. On Sunday the mountain is wide open, and you can stay out til 3:00 then bug back to the condo to get warm and watch the game.

Could be worse-

And the one at Heavenly....https://abcnews.go.com/US/5-skiers-hospitalized-chairlift-malfunction-heavenly-mountain-resort/story?id=117070441

I lived in Mammoth from 92-94 in the winters....skied on the Mammoth Mt. Race Team, we would train every day during the week from noon till closing (4:00) and sometimes on Saturdays if it wasn't busy.

On days when we had no training, I'd be on the mt. at 7:30 while they were getting the lifts fired and warmed up and they'd let me ride up. I'd get 4 or so rocket runs in and head home for the rest of the day. My mom lived up there and instructed from 92-2020ish, I went a bunch of times in 95-96, but then decided that sitting on the road for 5-6 hours in each direction just to stand in line for 3-4 hours a day was stupid, haven't been on snow since. I won a raffle at Hennessey's one night and ended up with a new snowboard, and they had a weekend deal for the employees, so I drove up a couple of the girls from the bar and spent a few days up there in 2004....couldn't believe how much the town had changed. Can't imagine what it looks like now. It used to be a cool little shitty small town where everyone knew everybody and everybody drove beater toyota 4x4s....it's all different now....like disneyland but with snow. I have no interest whatsoever in being around that many of those kinds of people.

I never paid for a pass, but I sure as shit wouldn't pay $200+/day for that.

The video is misleading, as most are. Conditions are shit and most of the mountain is closed.....everyone is just trying to get up the chair so they can get back down the bar....that's not common. My Dad (77 and going strong) still goes up and takes my son with him....they're going up Sunday after next and it should be pretty slow if history continues to repeat itself. Takes me 3 tries to get outta bed every morning....my knees can't handle skiing anymore.

That’s a killer tip. I may try to book for that weekend

One of the comments said all other ski lifts were on hold due to wind. I’d go to the bar… lol
The longest fifteen minutes of my life was spent on a stopped chairlift at Colorado's Arapahoe Basin ski area. The top of the mountain is around 13,000', which is about 1,000' above the tree line.

That particular day, I was on the chairlift to the top, and above the tree line when it stopped. The temperature was -15° F, and the wind was gusting to 25-30 MPH. It was a cold sumbitch.

Looks like Chair 16, Canyon Lodge. Yeah, it can get crazy there mid morning during the holidays. So many people base out of Canyon and Chair 16 is one of the ways out of the area, thankfully they just upgraded the lift last year to a high speed 6 chair. That's bound to happen between during weekend holidays and especially between Christmas and New Years. If I were on the mountain today I would probably go inside and enjoy a couple Modelo's for a bit then head to my favorite chair 23 and do laps on Cornice until the crowds mellow. No lines on Chair 23 ever.

Mammoth tip... During the holidays up there have your crew wrap up the day at 3:30pm and hit happy hour/dinner somewhere by 4pm, lots of places to go to. Any later you're gonna be waiting in a line. Going back to the condo and showering up will work against you.

Ugh, heading up tomorrow for a long weekend. I try to not go to places that the rest of the planet goes to during school breaks, but I got kids in school, so not a lot of options and I'm not a fan of pulling the kids out of school for recreation... Tried to hold out for some last minute lodging deals, but pretty much got laughed at and was told "yeah, you and the rest of So Cal...," so I bit the bullet and paid holiday rates... Good news is that I know the mountain well enough to get away from the lodges ASAP and just spend the day traversing...

Dan. I dont think it Canyon Express #16. One of the comments said the lift only holds 3 people. Like you say. #16 has been upgraded to high speed. MM shows several ifts closed for wind hold right now. 16 is one of them.

Been too long for me to be able to tell what chair it is.

But I do know this...

Mammoth is a BIG fucking place, and there is no reason to stand in a line that long at ALL! 🤣

Ha Ha..If you started at Main Lodge and your over at Canyon or Eagle Lodge and most of the lifts are closed due to wind. You either stand in line or take the shuttle. 🤷‍♂️ 😂

Thats what I thought by the direction of the lift line. 🤷‍♂️ It will get you back to Eagle Lodge and Chair #9. But you will have to traverse to the other lifts to get to the other side. I start at Canyon. So I would be inside at the bar or taking the gondola back to The Village. 👍 🍻

Chairs 7, 8, and 20-23 are the only triples left.

$209 for a lift ticket now.
DAMN!

A guy could take his family of 4 out to dinner for that lol.

The new detachable lifts aren't cheap....the new Chair 1 cost $28M....gotta pay for it somehow.

I can’t call Canyon Lodge Canyon Lodge. It will always be Warming Hut II.

That line is redonculous. Once you ski midweek on non holiday times its hard to put yourself through the bitch of holiday crowds.
X2
We use to camp in my parents bubble top van
In the parking lot at warming hut 2
Era 75/80
Also at the main lodge from 70/75
My parents figured finally figured it out
That it was 10/15* warmer at the WH2

I’m a mammoth ski bum
Been going there for 55 years .

Yep. Since I retired I only ski midweek. I remember when it was WH2 and Eagle Lodge was Chair 15. Spent many drunk nights at Rafters and Andersens Bars. 🍻😁

Current Mammoth conditions are windy with 178 of 178 trails open with 23 of 24 lifts open. A lift ticket today is $259. Enjoy!
That's more than what my Purgatory season pass cost in the 70s. I think it was $215.

Yeah, I'm old.

😁

If so.....there isn't enough sking to be had to go thru this line.....not a chance in hell.....lol

That was Sat 14th....blizzard condition and only 1-2 lifts open ...that was the line for 8 as 16 was closed and nothing else was open...shortly after they shut down the mountain completely that was a complete anomaly...when I got up and saw the wind....I knew the mtn was not opening and it would be crazy and shortlived....we headed to the bar... but hey video's like that keep the casuals away so that is always a good thing.
