Who's been?

I've been wanting to go to this forever, and every year it gets pushed off!

I'm going this year come hell or high water.

Figure I'll dry camp on Owens River Road and drive into town every day.

Who's been? Got any tips for me?

Thanks in advance.

It's been scaled down over the years. The enviro nuts and all that. 🤬

I need to go before they shut it down completely. One of my buddies has raced there Way back in the day.

Hopefully he's going with me. 👍🏼

Keep me updated… pending my work schedule, I may try to make it.
Riding in that terrain looks like a blast, if their is riding for SXS, maybe I bring the toyhauler and KRX…

Last I was there was 2009. 6th in 450 novice main and was 2nd in open class qualifier until I crashed and dislocated my shoulder. Theyve been threatening to stop that event for years. Setting and weather is gorgeous and it draws a few of the big name riders as well.

There are a ton of condos etc nearby you can rent, that's what we used to do, and raced out of the van. Parking at the track is limited so you'll likely have to park offsite but they run a tram back and forth. There are a few small scale grandstands and a few places trackside to watch from but you can't see the whole track as a spectator.

How awesome. 👏

I tried to ride my quad on an MX track a couple of times. It's an Amazing amount of work! I was gassed after just one lap. I eventually could do three laps, but was always toast at the end.

The pros make it look SO easy, most people don't realize how much work it truly is!

Hats off to you. 👍🏼

I raced there in 2009, 40 INT, finished 22nd out of 40. We stayed in a condo for a whole week.
When I did it you had to sign up on line and it went FAST like in less then a minute. Now I believe you have to "qualify" at local race tracks.
Don't forget to buy a practice day pass.
I am glad I did it, a very good memory for sure...

We went a couple years ago. My son raced it. A very different experience as far as having to put your truck in line the night before to assure a pit spot in the morning at the track. The scenery is amazing. I cant imagine it gets much better as far as tracks go.

My son and I were able to ride the track after a Sierra Safari ride yesrs ago. The track was huge and lots of drop offs and trees. Most beautiful track I've seen. I've wanted to go watch the race but is usually the same time as the Burly Idaho boat races.

… I lived in Mammoth for the first year of the motocross… I remember a guy I knew David Capps being heavily involved in the organization of it… the first year was great… Then it grew and it grew and it grew👍

Went a few times in the late 80's .... it was great to see the top riders there like Rick Johnson and Jeff Ward among others. I think they were talking about it closing back then. It was always right before the 4th of July..

… I just googled Mammoth Mountain motocross and it said the first race was in 1968 but apparently I didn’t live there for the first race. I didn’t move there till 1970… I remember now that a bunch of us rode up in the back of Eddie Powell‘s 4 x 4, pick up truck in his camper shell and stayed at Bernie Coynes house then went to the race and there were some psychedelic drugs involved… It was a ton of fun… At least I was there for the first race 🤷🏽‍♀️

We have been several times, defiently worth checking out.

Its pretty cool to walk around the event and see people like McGrath, Emig, Ryno, Hart, etc....

As mentioned, Sherwin Creek is the closest campground. If you are camping, you may also want to check out Mammoth MTN RV park, New Shady Rest or Pine Glen. Or do the VEBO thing and find a condo. Whatever you decide, I would try and book something sooner than later- they are usually booked out a year in advance for the event.

This looks like a tent campground?

I was thinking about taking my toy hauler and dry camping?
It holds motorhomes and trailers. I was in mammoth last year during the race to go SXS the area and we parked across the road from Sherwin Campground at a day camp spot. We went through and there were rigs of all sizes there and a creak runs through it.

we have been pretty much every year for the past 7 years.
my son has raced it and loves it...track is awesome and super fun.
If you are going to race, you gotta get in line around 3am so you can bring your vehicle in to the pits. If you are only going to spectate, there are busses that run from the parking lot into the pit/track area.
it is a great time and the atmosphere is pretty laid back.
bring a cooler full of drinks and snacks. there is a few food vendors but they are super expensive and the food isnt very good

Done. Made reservations at Sherwin Creek.

My buddy said you can walk from SC to the track, so I'm thinking that will work perfectly. All dry camping spots, but I'm perfectly fine with that also.

Been wanting to do this for ages. First trip of the summer is booked! 😍

People forget that this race is at a fair bit of altitude. I'm going with a buddy to ski Super Bowl weekend. I know how winded I get from skiing, I can't imagine being able to ride MX there. With my asthma I'd die.
I have done been crossing bucket list tracks off for years and did Unadilla NY last summer. The only other west coast track besides Hangtown on that list for me is Washougal. If I had a bucket list of places to spectate I imagine Mammoth would be at the top of it, but at my age I wanna ride 'em not just watch the fast guys have all of the fun.

Washougal is one of my favorites. They have amatuer day before the National. Get there!

I recommend spending the week in mammoth to acclimatize before racing. The tracks at around 8200 feet above sea level.

Washougal no longer runs a Vintage weekend like the Unadilla Rewind or the Boise Inter Am, or the CZ World Champs that I am doing in April. Modern MX really holds no interest for me, modern riders don't have the old school vibe in the pits. A modern bike can make anyone look and feel fast. I crave the feeling that only comes from riding the same bikes that I have always ridden. I want to smell that premix. Here's a pic of me getting beer advice from Brad Lackey at the CZWC in 2016 and a couple from last June. Notice me out in front of some Honda 500's. This is a grass track race where you want smooth power and a low center of gravity.

Mammoth was on my bucket list and I was planning on trying to qualify before a trip over the bars ended those plans. Rode Hangtown a few times with the OTHG, beast of a track especially when you get the 15th Moto of the day.

The CZ race is in a river bottom and was flooded one year, so the race was moved to Hangtown. That track is off the chart bitchin' but I fought jetting gremlins all weekend with a last minute carb replacement. I grabbed the wrong slide off the bench putting it together. Doh!
I'm trying to get the Husky guys to run a once a year race there like the CZ guys do in Marysville.

I lived in Sherwin Campground in the late 50's early 60's each summer. My uncle and some other LACoFD guys "built" most of the camp spots there back then.
They did a great job because the camp is bitchen and so is the location.
Do you know what the rock cabin across the road next to the creek was originally?

Raced with the OTHG in 2001 and 2002.

AWESOME experience.

Track Preped PERFECTLY every moto..

2001 - 6th (2nd, dnf, 1st, 3rd) and 2002 - 11th
Funny you say "Track preped PERFECTLY every moto". The year I raced they said our lap times were TOO fast so Sunday they did not grade/prep the sand section....... There were 4' rollers on Sunday's motos....

I remember a cabin on the "north/mountain side" of the road but don't remember who it belonged to. My favorite cabin in the area back then was owned by Cybil Coleman.........her family was a founding family of Mammoth. The items she had in her cabin were very rich in tha area history.

My nephew won a bear in 2023. I was planning on racing it but broke my back in the beginning of 2023.

Maybe I’ll see you guys there this year.
Hope your 2024 starts out better!

For those of you sitting at home, who are wondering what the buzz is all about. This is what it looks like from a Pro's perspective.

… spectacular… I want to say that I was up on part of the track with one of the locals… Who raced it many years… in the early days…i’m just having a hard time connecting the dots as to what vehicle we would have been in???… I know why we were up there… Because we could🤷🏽‍♀️
