One of the things that I dislike about my boat is the TALL bimini top. To me it really takes away from the looks of the boat, makes it look more like a alpha driven SBC boat :p. Anyhow, wondering if anyone has any experience with lowering their own bimini?

I would like to cut it down about a foot. What do I need to do? Just take the ends off, cut the tubing and put new ends on?

Do I need to cut and adjust the front and middle supports as well?

I have the name of a shop near me that can do it, if I don't have to bring it home and can do it myself I would prefer.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Here is a picture of how it looks now.

You probably need a new frame...I think cutting the existing frame would make it pretty weak.

I think it looks fine....probably a lot easier moving around in the boat with it like that....If had a lower one, you would really be crouched down to move about.

Nice looking boat!

This is RVRDAD and I shortened mine a few years ago and I just cut off the extension below the 1st rib. Yours is already at deck level so you will have to shorten the ribs and the support. Problem being this will move the center-line of the Bimini forward. You have to reconfigure your whole structure. Kind of a pain in the ass!

Keep in mind if you lower it too much you'll be hitting your head on it everytime you climb in the back of the boat.

I will add my $.02, it's not the bimini, it's the front two straps. Move the straps down and it will look fine.

Look at the inmate check in thread and you will see what I mean.

Consider that minor Bimini styling changes the appearance too.
We didn't like the looks of the factory Bimini, and had Adlee make this one custom.
Looks much better.

I have had low profile bimini's on my last two boats. My wife wont go out without it. I think it looks alot cleaner. They both came that way.

Your bimini looks fine, but I know what you mean. Mine is chopped down and it looks better than standard. I do not run with it up I just have it up late in the summer for some shade while parked.

Your boat looks decent.

I've had them both ways and can say it gets old walking hunched over. You get up to get the ski line, go to the cooler, get in, get out, walk to the bow..... it gets to be a pain with a low top.

Have new canvas made thats longer. That will lower the bimmini & all mounting points will stay in the same place, and you will have more shade too.

I cut mine down on my Lavey about 9".

Remove the ends by drilling out the rivet. Loosen the set screw on the front bow and push it up. Then cut and replace the cap. I used self taps but keep in mind the tubing is harder then you think. You may need to pre drill.

You will need to change the angle of the top bow as well so things look symmetrical. The front straps need to be relocated back a bit and that will also help with the look. keep in mind all the straps will need to be shorter. May take some needle and thread action.

Peace.

Now fuck off.

:D:D

If you drag the boat home I would be happy to help you cut that thing down. I have done maybe 6 or so. It wont affect the material as the straps hold it taunt.

I have never cut one a foot though.

I agree. First thing and easiest thing I would try is move the straps down on each side of front rails about 8" below fabric. On my boat, the straps connect to the boat behind the black windscreen area, near the corners, where dash meets gunnel.
Good luck!
