OK.

Going to LOTO July 11-13 on the way to Springfield to meet my significant other’s father.

We will have 2 kids in tow (9 and 13) that love to explore and don’t need typical kid entertainment (but it’s also a vacation…)

I don’t know shit about fuck when it comes to LOTO. Part of this trip is to get an idea if it’s a good retirement fit for us. So, driving around looking at lots / areas / houses, things like that.

We were looking into Margaritaville, and it’s 700 bucks for the two nights. If that’s what to be expected, so be it. But I wanted to poll the inmates with experience at LOTO and maybe get some intel or insight on things we may be overlooking.

Thanks in advance.

Oh, and I know LOTO is closed. I’m going anyway.

No need to spend that kind of money for a room.
There are plenty of nice places for $100-150 per night especially in the middle of the week.

It will be plenty hot when you are here. The hottest time of the year.

Much of the narrative on RDP about the weather is kinda funny. There are usually about six-eight weeks of hot weather (90+) per year and six to eight weeks of cold weather (days below freezing).

There are places around the lake for about every budget.
You will not come close to getting a real feel for it in two or three days.

MIssouri is a great place to live if you stay away from the ghettos in St. Louis and Kansas City.

If you have some specific questions post them up.

I could sit and type all night but not really touch anything you might care about.

I love the west but I enjoy the simplicity and the consistency of the Midwest and specifically Missouri.
It’s still a “free state”………

Margaritaville is definitely "touristy" and a lil run down. I'd stay away as mentioned. I'd vrbo a house. There's a big water park over in Osage that's supposed to be great for kids. Coconuts has a decent water park too. Looking at places to live: a TON depends on what boat(s) you are gonna have, what kind of water you wanna live with & do u wanna be on busy side of the lake. Anything east of Captain Rons will be big water every weekend. We live 4.5 miles west of Captain Rons @ 39mm & LOVE how quiet it is most days, both by boat & car. 1 stop light town, Laurie, is 4+ miles from our house. As mentioned post up your questions & we will try to help.

Seems like Texans and LOTO are akin to Californians and LHC.
I swear, I think every Texan I've met in Cabo sofar this week have their vacation homes at LOTO.

I’d agree with Rob. VEBO a house on the water. It’s nice to have a dock and walk out for coffee.

Margaritaville is getting a little long in the tooth as well. It was nice when it was redone from the tan tar a few years ago but it’s showing its wear. And yeah, it’s pretty pricey.

But then again, it’s on the water, has a cool pool and decent restaurant. And you’re 2 miles from performance boat center that I’m sure you’ll want to stop in and check out. Get the bang bang shrimp at redheads! Bomb! 😁

So I live in Havasu and I avoid weekend boating like the plague when I can.

I see myself wanting that ability in retirement as well. I’d like to be close enough to boat over to the action if I *wanted* to, but far enough away that it doesn’t fuck up my daily life. Lol.

Boat will most likely be adapted to the environment. I’d like it to be a 27 speedster, as that’s the goal for myself, but I understand a big V may just be better for that lake.

Thanks for the info so far. We will look into the water park as well.

Tritoons do very well here as long as u don't let Tank drive. Ton of people have multiple boats on lifts at their docks. Our side of the lake you can run just about any boat you want even on Saturday, especially if you go west of 47mm Big Dicks Halfway Inn

LOTO is a boaters haven, but Table Rock and Bull Shoals have their pro's as well.

Have a great trip. I need to get back there sooner than later.
I'd retire to TRL far before LOTO.. It's a really nice lake with way less traffic.

A solid intro into Missouri is found here...

OP you'll get plenty of info on LOTO..so
While in Springvegas:

Wonder's of Wildlife Museum is worth taking them to, its on the Bass Pro Campus.
Steal your Dollar Holler aka Silver Dollar City is one of the top rated theme parks in the nation..pretty cool and worth spending a full day.
Wilsons Creek National Battlefield..lot of preserved civil war history in one location
Springfield Style Cashew Chicken https://www.leongsasiandiner.com
Fantastic Caverns https://www.missouriscave.com
Top of the Rock https://bigcedar.com/top-of-the-rock/
Riverbluff Cave Museum https://www.monatsci.org
Springfield Nature Center (miles upon miles of trails)

I went to LOTO last Labor Day weekend without a boat to check out the area. I really like the Sunrise Beach area and Gravois Arm and over by Big Dicks. Hope to bring the boat out this coming spring for a week and rent a cabin so we can check out more of the lake!

Dont forget Norfork Lake. Another beautiful lake. Way less crowded than TRL and less stumpy and clearer water than Bull Shoals!

AirBnB/VRBO is definitely the way to go at LOTO. Weve done a few there, and stayed at an RV park in Laurie once too. Being right on the lake is definitely the way to do it.

The part that is a little tough, if you are just cruising around by car its hard to see much of the lake. You can go to marinas, restaurants, etc but so much of the lake is housing/trees that you dont even realize the lake is 200yds away from you.

I am not really sure how to combat that without taking a boat (i assume you can rent boats somewhere?). Weve taken many different boats there and had fun in all during the week. Everything from a little ~15' sea doo switch pontoon, up to a 32' sea ray pachanga. During the week it was fun...friday-sunday it gets rough depending where you are at like others have said.

Either way, its an awesome area and you will have a blast no matter what!

Table Rock is a fabulous lake, beautiful and clean.
Bull Shoals is a “muddy lake” compared to LOTO and Table Rock, and it’s much quieter. You will not see very many if any big boats on Bull Shoals, its a different “atmosphere”.

The biggest difference between Table Rock and LOTO (beside the obvious size and shoreline) is that there are activities and places to go (restaurant, parks, etc.) that can be accessed from the water on LOTO where as Table Rock doesn‘t have that.

Table Rock is boating only, for the most part, where as there are destination places on LOTO. I think there are something like 35-40 different places (activities and restaurant, bars, etc.) to access off the water at LOTO. That is the greatest advantage if you like that kind of thing.

My personal favorite spot is on another lake in the Ozarks (not LOTO, Bull Shoal or Table rock). We have an access point that isn’t on any map and is only known by the locals. I ain’t giving up the location because I don’t need any of you mouth breathers showing up and polluting the place……..

Ended up just kind of winging it. Nowhere near enough time to see it all. Met some locals that gave some insight as to the quieter / less expensive areas. Know enough that I’m going to explore getting into a lakeside lot, if not something in one of the ‘community’ build-outs.

I’ve never seen so much green in my life.

There’s wayyyyy more money floating around here than Havasu. My god. Much different style of boats for sure, but even these big cobalt cabin things that everyone has are cool.

The “little” sunsation center console is badass!!

This place is amazing. It’s funny though, I’ve always wanted to see this lake, but everyone that asked where we are from, said ‘holy shit I’ve always wanted to see Havasu’ lol

Ubderstanding loto versus a federal flood control resorvior. Loto was built by an energy company that owns to the high water mark. This allows private property right up to normal water level. As a power generating lake water level is held in a narrow range. In February there a small draw down, i think about 5feet. Everyone can own a private dock.

At the flood control reseviors private property starts at top of the flood level. This might be 50 to 100 feet from waters edge. Individual docks have been eliminated. Water level flucuates greatly

Loto is a heavily developed shoreline. The other lakes much less so.

Loto is 90+ miles long and has several arms that stretch 5-10 miles. There is all kinds of boating. Calmer boating can be found at the state park, niagua arms and above the 35 mm. Gravios arm is busy.

There are not any places to beach a boat and not many places to anchor below the 30mm. Remember about every house has a dock.

Loto is between kc and st louis. Weekends are busy. We prefer midweek boating.

Go to funlake.com and request a free visitors guide. Has a good map of the lake.

This shows most of the eateries in the area. See the map.

LOTO IS CLOSED!!!

We’re meeting with a builder our next trip. Although not ideal, we bought a 2nd tier lot in Porto Cima (spelling might be wrong) and it looks to make sense to build a moderate home that we can sell or rent later and upgrade. I’m out on anything lower that the 30(ish) MM…..

Where did you get this info?

When we were looking for a lake house we looked at 12 different lakes in many different state and did not find that to be the case. My 1 slip covered dock peremit was easy to get from the TN Valley Authority and the COE.

I think we’d be fine with a 2nd tear lot, it seems like there isnt any shortage of boat slips, but lakefront would be more awesomer.

We were told to explore between the 26-36 when we answered the lifestyle questions from a guy we met at one of the bars who was born here 🤓

I was reading a few years ago table rock and others went to community docks. Added to that they had to be solar.

I'm always looking at lake front homes there, there are decent homes under 500k with a dock. I want to do a recon trip like FBW is doing, keep posting, I'm thinking in the spring to go poke around a bit.

There’s some “stuff” you have to consider when looking to buy. Stuff like the ground the house is built on, septic, power, and some other things I’ve heard from people that live there. I’d talk to @lake p.a.l. and get the real down and dirty on what to stay away from before you buy.

👍

I hear good things about table rock. Less crazy than loto. I think loto is like Franklin Tenn. all the range but will burn out from the influx of people moving there. TR is still kinda off radar.

Table Rock gets crazy busy as well with cruisers and big boats, lots of restaurants and bars as well. Not sure it's "better" unless you are drawn to that type of experience. Check out Beaver or Norfork for a less mayhem if that's what you are looking for.,....

Seems like a lot of good info in here, so I'll piggy back in with my questions too. I'm thinking about taking my yearly 3-week vacation in LOTO next year. I'll drive out in the RV, bring at least one bike, and maybe a car (not sure exactly what I'll have at the time). A couple of questions:
  1. I was considering taking it around the LOTO shootout event. No dates have been published for 2025 yet. Is it always held the weekend before Labor Day or not necessarily?
  2. What's their September bikeweek like? Worth attending? I did Sturgis last year during the rally, it is anything like that?
  3. I've looked at a few RV places. I'll need a pull through spot and Scallywags looks to be as good as any I've seen. Also seems to be right next to Captain Ron's, which looks to be the shootout headquarters. That all right? Decent place or place to stay away from?
  4. I'd like to check out the area. It's always intrigued me and one place that's on my possible retirement locations list, although that's probably 15 years off. Any must see/must do things in the area?
Hopefully that will get me started. I'm sure I'll have more questions in the future.

Was there for almost a week for the Shoot Out. Really fell in love with the place. We got lucky with weather the first few days as temps were down and low humidity. That is until Friday afternoon and it all changed. Not too bad if you're on (or in) the water but otherwise, pretty uncomfortable. If you are used to the dry of the West, it may take a while to get used to it. Because of that, I'm not sure I'd want to be a full timer there.

We rented a nice AirBnB home with dock a bit west of Rob's place (Cartwright Cove) and really liked that side as it is way calmer. If I were to buy it would definitely be out that way. Prices vary but our place was valued around $500K per Zillo. You can get nicer and you can get cheaper. Second tear will be cheaper and many have community docks or ramps.

I actually looked farther away from the water and prices really drop. We were exploring potential rental properties (for STR) so would try to buy on the water with a dock but if I were to relocate there I would prefer acreage away from the lake. I'd rather have room for all my toys and it is easy to tow to the water. Plus, you have access to tons of 4x4/UTV trails, hunting, hiking, fishing, and other activities besides just boating. There are also many nice curvy roads to have fun on if you are into sports cars.

Also thought about just buying a lot and parking my travel trailer on it and then building a shop. Here is almost 1.5 acre lot for $6K!

Or how about 3 acres for $3,900!

Here is property description:

Fantastic 3 acres of land eagerly awaiting construction of your dream home. Conveniently located near all amenities. Only a 4-minute drive from Hastain and a mere 15 minutes from Edwards Benton County, MO. Forbes Community boasts an array of recreational facilities, such as tennis courts, baseball fields, a shooting range, an RV park, boat loading docks, and, best of all, private access to the Lake of the Ozarks. Don't forget that this is a buildable property, allowing you to bring any construction idea to fruition. A vacation home? Absolutely! Or a primary residence, now or in the future? Most definitely! Forbes R/V Park: This gated section of Forbes encompasses the Deer Creek Arm of the Lake of the Ozarks. It offers a host of conveniences for weekend getaways or extended stays. Featuring: 266.15 Acres of lush green space Ranch Pavilion Bathhouse complete with showers Tennis/Basketball court 11 Camping slips equipped with electrical hookups, water, picnic tables, and a wood-burning grill 2 Playgrounds Fire pits Gated entrance RV cleanout station Scenic walking trail alongside Deer Creek Forbes Park Boat Ramps: Boat Ramps to Lake of the Ozarksthe quiet end of the Lake! Forbes Park has three (3) boat ramps with access to the Lake of the Ozarks. Forbes Lakes: You'll have access to our interior lakes and to Lake of the Ozarks! For those of you who would like to fish or just take a boat ride, our Park has four to choose from. You'll have access to rent one of our boats! If you've been contemplating land purchase in Missouri, this location is tailor-made for you. Close to shops, gas stations, and all essential services.

Sounds pretty good and what could you lose? $4K at the worst. I wanted to go drive out and look at this property but we didn't have enough time. I'd like to take a drive back there in a month or so and really spend some time looking around and will check it out. I also want to see how the drive is to there from where I am in northern NV. The drive from Vegas kind of sucks until you get to Oklahoma then it is pretty nice. From where I am it is a straighter shot across NV, UT, CO, KS and then a short drive in MO. Or I-80 if I'm towing heavy and don't want to have to cross the Rockies in CO.

Bike Fest starts next week and thought about towing the Harley out there but not crazy about those crowds anymore and don't want a distraction from exploring the area (although I'm sure there are tons of great riding roads).

You can download the LOZ app for your phone. It keeps you updated on all kinds of LOTO activities. We listened to the live stream shoot out coverage on it.

Thanks for the info! My parents and brother are in FL still. Parents are retired and my brother owns his own yacht/boat detail company. I think the LOTO area looks like a blend of the FL Keys and Havasu, but I've never been. Next year, my big 3-week trip will likely be to LOTO instead of Sturgis, and it sounds like they all want to come up and hang for the shootout. My brother has joked about selling his house in FL, buying something cash in LOTO and starting a branch of his detail company there. Dude's 15 years younger than me and WAY closer to retirement! LOL.

Due to the boating access, the parentals are actually considering in the area too. They have never lived outside of FL, have never been without a boat, and have never been more than 30 minutes from a launch ramp. It may just suit all of our desires. Seems like it would be 1/2 way between FL and NV, humidity / temperature wise, so a good compromise.

I've seen some mention of mile markers, yet Google maps doesn't seem to be able to show them. Is there a windy area on the lake? Party area? Restaurants area? I've seen some listings that specifically mention we're near MM11), etc.

Yes to all.

I was blown away. Fucking huge and waterfront restaurants absolutely everywhere. Even in the “quiet” parts of the lake.

We stayed around 45 miles marker. Big Dicks is at 46. There are a couple other restaurants up that way but most of the stuff is on the other side of the bridge, miles 35 and under. The closer you get to Osage the busier it gets. I guess that would be considered the party area too. The Shoot Out course was around mile 34 and that's where everyone was rafted up. Not sure about other weekends.

Anything higher than 35 (the bridge) seems to be way calmer and the area I would prefer as you can just run the boat to the busy area then go home to peace and quiet.

Not sure about wind. It rained like crazy for a while on Saturday but never really got windy.

It's rare when the lake gets big wind chop because it twists/turns so many directions. You can come around a bend & encounter 2 footers but that's VERY rare. We just ran our 17' old pile 110 miles round-trip to Truman dam Saturday morning on Labor day weekend but we live at 39mm on quiet side of the lake.
