My 16 year old LCD Sony Bravia in my bedroom is going out, the last few days it gets red static outlines and shadows.

What is the best type of TV's now, obviously I am sure all new TV's pictures quality is better than what I have.
I use a Amazon Fire Box now so with a new TV I wouldn't need that since they are smart TV's now.
Are Samsung's still good?

You're probably looking at 55" or 65". I like OLEDs if you don't have direct sunlight on the TV.

Don't always count on the smart TV interface. Try it out but some of mine are so slow clicking around it's not worth using. You might still end up using your Fire Box.

Unless you have to have the best video possible in your bedroom, Just grab a TCL Roku tv and take the extra money to buy a nice dinner. They perform perfectly well and the Roku ecosystem is the largest in the nation (more devices than Apple, Firestick, Google, etc.) by a large margin. They also offer a lot of free content as well.

I just bought a Hicense 58" Roku at Walmart for $269. I've had a 46" Hicense in my backyard for a year now, still works fine.

I buy the Roku tvs for outside and the bedrooms. I think I have a Sony Bravia 70” for the living room. The Sony is 3 years old, I think the new model is already a lot better. I’d seriously just buy another cheap Roku tv if it broke at this point. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I’ve bought a few TV’s recently. Sony Bravia seems to be the best one so far. I have a TCL and Hisense as well. Sony, Hisense and TCL in order from high to low rating. The refresh rate on the Sonys are 120hz which are better for my usage. Although, the Hisense is great for just streaming.

I go to the Best Buy outlet in Montclair and buy an open box item. The 55” Sony I bought for my garage last week was $799. I got it for $219. Wasn’t missing a thing.

I'm a big fan of Sony.

On the OLED screens, the black is actually black.

If you're first one lasted you 16 years, why change brands?

I like Samsungs on screen menus a lot better than Sony. If you use a lot of their built in stuff or streaming via the TV apps this may be important.

If you just plug the tv into a cable or directv receiver and never do anything else it makes little difference.

That being said I’ve never had a bad Samsung and my dad always buys Sony and he’s never had a bad one either.

But the way TVs are getting cheaper just buy something in the size you want at the price that works for you and don’t worry about it.

This. I always try and buy open box deals at Best Buy. Same warranty as new!

i ended up with a samsung 85" oled for home. i have a few hisense TV's where I didnt need anything crazy, like in the RV... the roku interfaces are all nice and smooth regardless of their tier or their price. However I purchased a couple with the android interface and they're just complete garbage, ended up taking them back. SOOOO slow. My main samsung has some "tizen os" that has app support, air play, etc and seems to work well. My only gripe with it is that theres a "samsung tv" app that you cant get rid of.

Couldn't believe how cheap TV's have gotten. Costco had some bitchin deals when I was browsing yesterday.

You can get a 65 ONN Roku TV at Walmart for $298. I bought one for the Havasu pad and one here at home for the backyard.

The ONN wall mount is $20 for a fixed flat mount, and $47 for an articulating wall mount. They are really nice TV mounts.

The ONNs TVs work great actually. Interface is snappy, they look good and sound OK for integrated speakers.

I have 2 Samsung's and hate the remotes. Play, fast fwd etc buttons on the bottom are too small and sucks to use. One keeps turning off after about 10 min of using. It will be replaced with another Visio. That is what the other tv's are and it is just easier to have the same remote design on all the tv's.

LED is a LCD panel with led lighting instead of fluorescent, no more fluorescent made. OLED has best picture, costs more. My order of preference. LG, Sony, Samsung. Most of the Sonys use LG panels, but are starting to make their own on some models.

If you can hold off a few weeks there will be tons of TV Sales over the Labor Day Holiday. If all your doing is watching movies you’ll probably be fine with a 65” LED Smart TV. Probably 10X better picture than that a 16 year old Sony. I’d start narrowing down what you want so when the Labor Day Sales come you can pick one up at somewhere like Best Buy. Don’t procrastinate like I did last year and missed out on some sweet deals! Inventories aren’t what they use to be. Good Luck!

Bought my fisrt Roku over four years ago and no issues. Picked up a 65" for my shop two years ago also no problems. 👍 At that price, just easier to replace when they fail. The first one replaced an older high end Sony that was not worth spending $$ for repairs.

Costco pricing for Samsung TVs is competitive with, and sometimes beats, my employee pricing.

And Costco doesn’t spec stripped-out versions of electronics like some retailers like Walmart.

Costco is a great place to compare what you see, side by side.

If it was my main TV where I am going to do most of my viewing, then I would go with an OLED if you want the best picture quality with the best colors. For a bedroom, an LED LCD would do just fine.

I wonder if the naked eye can even tell the difference between the technologies today. Can you even buy a bad tv today?

I think we start to reach a point of diminishing returns, especially with compressed source material.

Just because a stream is 4K doesn’t necessarily mean the compression is good.

And especially considering that the default picture settings on many TV’s is way too bright and contrasty…they’re designed to pop in a showroom.

Adjusting settings for accuracy is pretty easy, just google the model number and there’s typically some one on an AV forum who’s posted calibrated settings.

While each TV of a given model may be slightly different, it’s gonna be a lot closer than the default settings.

I've got a Costco spec'd 75" Samsung, but only use the Samsung remote for turning it off. I've got it tied into my receiver so I use that to turn it on and set the HDMI plug, then I use the Amazon Fire Stick remote for navagating, and if I use my bluray player I just change the HDMI plug on the receiver and use the bluray remote. You just can't get away from all the remotes - I tried a universal remote with terrible results.

Wandering through Walmart yesterday I noticed they had 65" TVs made by several different manufacturers on sale for $398.

Cheap TCL from Walmart with Roku in the living room and motorhome. Love the remote super simple. Have a smart Sony in the bedroom and can’t stand the remote! As far as picture goes I could care less don’t watch anything that a need a picture that blows me away.
