There's one on CL for $1,700, 4.8L with a 4160 trans, 28k mi.

Seems a bit expensive but who knows how much he would come down. If you could get it for $1,200 & sell the trans for $400, you would be @ $800 for a complete engine.

5.7 L 350 V8. 1999 is a tough year to find. This Vortec has more towing miles than fositys ford has. This is pre guberment stock. at least 2/3rds of the miles i accumulated are towing either my quads or boats. I got no complaints. Its time. the pistons are slapping something fierce.

Why screw around just buy a remanufactured (not rebuilt) long block and be done with it. Free shipping on the motor and return shipping on the core for $1699 I cant see doing the labor twice just to keep the engine you have and rebuild it. If it was a classic Vet yeah, but on a 99 chevy not so much.

Question for you guys. My '87 chevy truck has a tired TBI 350 and next year I was thinking of putting a new motor in. I know the TBI 350's are dogs and I was wondering if the vortec 350 would work in it. I know I'd have to get a different intake manifold for the TBI but would everything else fit like the distributor, oil pan, exhaust manifolds, etc.? It's gotta pass smog and I know the vortec motors make better power so I was thinking it would be a better setup.

Mine also has aluminum heads. Another item I cant seam to find for an EXCHANGE type deal.
But thank you for the link. Maybe the have one . I just need to search there data base

Dave,

Why not just rebuild your heads, and be done. The shortblock of a SBC is rock soild up to about 2 million miles. That should get you another 100k out of it.

The heads on those TBI motors are junk. The vortec 350 with the roller cam makes over 50 more hp and still runs on 87 octane. I figure for the price these things cost I might as well get a whole long block. Although I could probably just rebuild my short block and put the vortec heads on it.

I went that route with my old 1983 suburban.

I machined the shortblock, pistons, bearings, RV cam, new Vortec iron heads and the GM aluminum Manifold, new waterpump, and because it has to pass emissions, I put all the smog crap back on, and hooked up every vaccum line to factory spec.

3 months later I had a nice rebuilt 350/350 to pulled the boat. Mine cost about $3200 in 2002.

The motor ran great when I replaced it with a 2005 Dodge Ram. I got tired of fixing the AC unit, and replacing the compressor.
