How do those rigs stay in the same spot during a hurricane?

For the record I'm not down playing this.

That ocean looks angry but I expected it to look worse than that.

This one is anchored into the ground as it is relatively shallow there.

The Frying Pan Tower – formerly the U.S. Coast Guard Frying Pan Light Station, is a lighthouse situated at the end of the Frying Pan Shoals, 34 miles south of Bald Head Island N.C.

The shallow waters of the shoals (only 35-50 feet under the Tower) made ship navigation treacherous so in 1854 a lightship was stationed there. For 110 years, except for a few years during The War Between the States and WWII, crews manned the lightship 24/7 in all weather.

In 1960 construction began on a permanent steel structure with a lantern house to replace the lightship. The structure was a modified Texas drilling platform, called a “Texas Tower” designed to provide housing and support for the light, warning ships of the shallow waters.

The Coast Guard decommissioned the station in 2004, sitting abandoned until 2010 where Richard Neal, a software engineer from Mint Hill, NC purchased the tower and currently runs the station as a bed and breakfast.

The storm’s maximum sustained winds were clocked late on Wednesday at 110 miles per hour (175 kph), down from a peak of 140 mph a day earlier, before it was downgraded to a Category 3, then a Category 2, on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of wind strength.

“While Florence has weakened below major hurricane intensity, the wind field of the hurricane continues to grow in size,” the NHC said in its latest bulletin.

If you click the link to the tower website, you can see pictures where the owner has all the torn up flags from the various hurricanes since he acquired the tower in 2010 hanging from the wall. Kinda neat.

Proof by assertion, sometimes informally referred to as proof by repeated assertion, is an informal fallacy in which a proposition is repeatedly restated regardless of contradiction.

We should start the count down to grads banning thread. Kinda like the trump impeachment thread but waaaaaay more plausible.

When Irma hit BVI I happened onto the Bitter End yaght club webcam on the dock. It was still live, but now filming underwater seconds before it went off line.

Usually it shows the docks and boats etc. It was all light green then a fish went by and a minute later it was black.

The forecasting and predictions by the meteorologists were excellent. To put these idiots on the same broadcast is an embarrassment to those occupations; reporters and forecasters. Most unfortunately, all of the networks (Cable and alphabet) were guilty of this.
