I would love to know if anybody has gone through this kind of surgery and what kind of time frame am I looking at for rehab? I've been having shoulder pain for several months now and finally got the results from an shoulder arthrogram. I have a 70% labral tear and a split tear of the bicep tendon. The orthopedic doctor I was seeing is now referring me to a shoulder specialist so I'm sure I'll get some more answers soon but hoping to find out more info from someone that's actually gone through it. Thanks!

I had a labrum tear and rotator cuff tear in my right shoulder about 12 years ago. I was in high school and the surgeon did it arthroscopically I was basically back to playing football 3 months later. I had 3 screws installed into the bone where the labrum was then tied to it, granted I was pretty young at the time of the surgery. As for the bicep tendon tear I cant help you. I would definitely recommend a shoulder specialist (Dr. Zeman) in phoenix, Az did mine. if you do end up calling him tell him the Palmer family from Yuma sent you, he's worked on every one in my family. It probably won't get you any discounts but he has some good stories of all of us, obviously we have joint issues

Do you think months before I can get back to work or 6 months for complete healing? The first doctor said 6-12 months but I didn't ask him what he really meant by that.

two years ago I had my right shoulder done orthoed, labrum tear and rotator torn and a severed disconnected bicep tendon. All done arthroscopic with one calcium anchor to hold the bicep and I went back to work two days later. I guess it depends on type of work you do I sit behind a desk and point all day so it was kind of easy for me. As for rehab I guess it depends on how aggressive you are with it. I always try to push myself in P.T. so as long as you don't hurt it there then it goes relatively fast. I believe I was out of the sling after a month maybe three weeks then on to P.T. and I think that was three months but each injury and therapist is different so your results may vary.

For what its worth I had the left shoulder done five years ago and it was a torn rotator cuff with a bone spur stuck through it fun stuff and I always wondered why it never healed up but I did not go the arthroscopic route on the first one and it took 6-8 months to heal due to all the cutting so I would recommend the arthroscopic route if you can.

Either way good luck and understand that everyone is different don't be in to much of a rush or you could re-injure yourself again and its no fun doing it over.

I had a torn labrum and bicep tear like you. I was not able to return to work for 6 months. Not to scare you but 8 years later it's still screwed up, I just live with it and try to be careful. Don't want to go through surgery again...

I have a tear in my labrum in my right shoulder as well. Lots of physical therapy!! The doctor is trying to prevent surgery with my PT. Been doing that for 6 weeks, gonna do 6 more. If it is still hurting me then we will talk about surgery. Every person is different with different pain levels and tolerance to it. The folks at my physical therapy place have told me that it's not uncommon for full recovery after surgery to take up to a year. If you can start PT before surgery that is supposed to help as well.

Wow. OK, thanks!

I hear you. Bummer that you're not completely over it.

Thank you. I've been doing PT and it helps a little but I don't think I'm going to be able to overcome this without surgery. We'll see.......

I'm in the same boat. I've tried the pt but it's just to far gone. With the job I do it doesn't have the time to heal. I don't really want the off time so I'm just going till I can't. Same w my knee [emoji51]

M2ME,
I have a torn Labrum as well. You will be out 6 months for sure. Did the surgeon tell you if you have to repair your bicep tendon as well? If so, dedicate more time.

I haven't repaired mine because I don't want to be out of commish for that long.

Did you get multiple opinions?

That's my concern as well, being gone from work that long. Might have to do the same thing.

Craig, I'm waiting for the referral but hoping to see another specialist next week. The first doctor didn't seem comfortable doing the surgery and I'm not sure about the bicep tear. I'd be interested in getting it fixed if I could be back to work in 2 or 3 months.

I just saw my Dr. 2 weeks ago for the same thing he told me the rehab for the shoulder would be about 6 months.

I elected to have the hernia surgery this coming Monday 1st. This is a repair of a repair (2nd surgery) that went south.

Newport Orthropedics has a few doctors that are great. Dr Petrie is one.

Dr. Tim Gibson out of HB is great too.

Just a few recommendations.

Just curious why you would have to be off that long. I get that some on here are in construction. Can't Disney find some light duty things for you to do.

They probably can and will, and clearly my job is not as physical as many here. I was trying to figure out whether the recovery time is for complete recovery or enough to get back to work. I have some shows at Disney in December and the NAMM show in January that I'm hoping to get back for but want to know if that's a realistic possibility.

I have been through all of this. Mine was as bad as it gets. Labrum was torn and bicep tendon was stretched out and non supporting. Put the screws in to reattach labrum, and basically tied my bicep tendon back tight. All orthoscopic. My recovery was 6 months to getting back on the field, baseball. 4 weeks in shoulder sling. In that time you lose a lot of strength and it takes time to get that back. My biggest hurdle was flexibility. I could use it after the first 4 weeks, but it just did not work well. I am 100% now and never had a issue since. My biggest suggestion is just get it done asap. Don't wait. My doctors all said it could be fixed with PT, not knowing how bad it really was. Tried like you, never got better. Finally I demanded exploratory surgery and that is how they found the real damage. MRI did not show anything. I lost a couple months with this PT and run around to end up under the knife anyway. That is time I could have been recovering. PT will not fix this. My friend is going through this now. 4 months of PT and is now going under the knife. I told him day 1 just get the surgery. He would almost be back to normal, but instead has a long road ahead. Sorry to be long winded. You will recover fast with a strong commitment. You might miss some work, but once your back you will be more productive and have no pain. Good luck

I've been going through this for the past couple years and elected to not have surgery. After about 4 consecutive months of PT, it gets a little better, but I just don't have the time to continue with PT 3 times a week for 90 minutes each day. For me it is a lifestyle change. Mine is a partial tear and my should is floating out of the socket. PT tightens the muscles and pulls it back in.

If you come to AZ, Dr. Lee (same office as Zeman as someone suggested earlier) is the man when it comes to shoulders. Both Lee and Zeman are top docs in this field. Another who sees some of the Angels is here in Tempe, Dr. Farber. My PT is also one of the main go to guys of MLB players that have arm and shoulder injuries, guy knows his stuff. I often see a lot of your Angel guys when I am down there, worked out with a now retired NFL linebacker during my last stint last year.

My PT simply said that I have to make a lifestyle change and work out weekly to keep my shoulder in check. I know I need to do it, finding time is my problem as I work a ton of hours with my business. I am trying to avoid surgery at all costs because if you have surgery and cannot dedicate yourself to the PT and continue to keep the shoulder strong, it's a waste.

Take care of it now. In a few years it will be behind you with no more pain. After a few years get serious to re-mobilize your arm. (stretching) I went through this when I was 16 and chose despite my parents and surgeons recommendations NOT to have surgery. It took 20 years before I was not in pain and could scratch my shoulder blade behind my back without discomfort. My pt was shouldering rolls of carpet, carpet pad and swinging a hammer. It sucked. But i knew everything as a teenager and into my 20's. :D

Take care of yourself. Money is cheap and time can't be replaced.

Thanks again for everyone's insight and advice! If there's one thing we've learned here, it's that there are quite of few guys on RDP with jacked up shoulders!:smackhead
