Hello my fellow RDP members the wife and I have decided to purchase a sxs. We are not doing a Cam Am or Polaris. We are just starting the desert stuff and we have a six month old that we will be cruising around ocatillo wells or the high dessert here in California. We have decided not only for the price point that the Teryx4 LE will fit us well for our first sxs. Yes I know it's not as fast as Can Am or Polaris. My question is regarding having the 6 month old riding with us as we cruise the trails. The little ones car seat fits nicely in the back and is very secure with a few tie downs. Do I still need to get her a helmet by law? I am curious what my fellows members have done with their little ones in the past or present. Just want to make sure I do everything by the book and make this a new fun filled chapter in our life. Thank you all for your comments and advice.

99% sure everyone in a side X side in CA needs a DOT helmet. (i think that is the rating) Any way, get the lightest possible helmet for them. Their neck can't take the bobble head of a heavy helmet.

sorry read post above. By the way the king travel kit is expensive but will completely change the car.

Agreed, but not worth the money. Send the Terex down the road, pick up a RZR 900 XP4.

The more I read about this it looks that the wife and I should at least wait till she is one years old minimum so she can face forward in the car seat.

Short answer is no there is no DOT helmet for an infant.

It is your kid, but the general recommendation is to wait until they are 2 for the off roading. I started my son at 18 months, with some street rides and did some light off roading on graded roads.

He fit into a child size small DOT helmet at that time.

I think you are doing it right starting with the Terex.

I would wait until she can sit up/hold her head up, etc before doing anything. You will want her facing forward like you have her regardless. That said, some cruising around at 5 MPH will probably be fine on graded paths.. The ride will be better in the Terex than the car you drove in on.

Short Deck's kid was riding around in a XP1K at real young.. Kid has more offroad miles and probably more destinations clocked around mohave county than I do! :D

I used a snow board helmet on my son, that being said I rolled mine over backwards when he was 1 1/2 and he is all good and loves riding in the RZR.

I wouldn’t bang around in SXS with a six month old, with or without a helmet. There necks are too weak and sensitive. Not a good idea.

We started taking our kids off road before a year. although we did it in a rail that didnt require a helmet. I have found that a car seat fits them better than any of the off road boosters that I have found. I got a good neck support/pillow to help prevent injuries. I really think that helmets might be harder on them than anything and would try and get the lightest one possible ( or just leave them off and avoid popular areas that the rangers are known to frequent). I also found that ear protection is very beneficial especially if your car is loud or the wind is strong.

As others have said. Wait till they are two before ya take them in the SXS. It’s the rut ya don’t see that can really cause trauma to their spines. And even after they are two and riding with you, they simply can’t take the jostling that you and I can. Keep it cool and cruise with them when they are under 5. They will love it and so will you.

Problem is. The little ones fall asleep.
At 9 my kids still crash out in the rail almost every ride.

I use a gyro ski helmet for my 2 year old daughter and it works good in the car seat. She’s been riding since she was a year old. I just take it real easy and do max of about 10 mph.

The MFer for my son was getting him to wear the goggles/glasses. But once he did he realized it was more comfortable and that was never a problem again.

And then before he was 3 his helmet would shift his goggles off his eyes and we’d have to stop to adjust them. This year that is no longer a problem thankfully.

One thing that helped me was a small 2nd rear view mirror so I can see the kids in the back seat.
