I brought my Nieces and Nephews to the River this past weekend. Got them a electric dirtbike for Christmas to see how they would like it. After a few days of practice my Friend let me borrow a 50.

So now I am looking to buy a few of them. From 50-110. Going to look at 2 CRF 70s already. Was thinking 2 50s 2 70s and 2 110s.

Should I stick to Honda or are the Yamaha and Kawasaki just as good? Any ones in Particular to stay away from. I am not trying to be the mechanic each trip.

Also looking to buy kids riding gear. Ages 7-11.

All are good, I would just stay away from any eclectic starts for those size bikes. My BIL had a Yamaha 50 eclectic start and that thing was a pain in the ass to start. The kick start ones, no issues. Ended up giving it to a friend.

I think at some point we’ve had all of those bikes you listed. If buying them used, which I did, it’s all going to depend on how or if they were maintained or beat to hell. I think they are all about the same quality wise.

agree, plus when they dont want to start kids will usually keep cranking until the battery is dead. Then you have 2 things to fix 🤣

For that age group I might try and get a 50 and a 70 or 110. at least one can grow into the other bike.

Can’t go wrong with Honda’s and the carbs on the Yamaha’s clog easier than the other brands. I did Honda’s, BIL did Yamahas and I was always working on his family’s bikes.

I’ll have to agree on that. They clog, the floats get stuck so they piss gas, and little things like that but I like that they are easy to work on and run forever. I just put a new top end in that 97 125 and it was screaming all over the place. Made me want to hit the track bad.

My kids started with the Yamaha TTR 90…

Its was great platform for the little ones to learn on. They very low to the ground with more power than you think.

But their is nothing wrong what so ever with the Hondas… I just happened to find a great deal on the TTR 90…

Clogging carbs is pretty easy to solve on any dirtbike/quad… At the end of the trip… wash the bike, then fire it up and close the fuel valve, let them run until the engine dies, draining the fuel in the carb bowl… once they die… try to start the engine while the fuel valve is closed… which sucks air thru the jets… The next time your are ready to ride… open the fuel valve… give it a bit of time to fill the carb bowl.. and they fire right up.

I have been using non ethanol 91 in all the small engines since my fuel pump went out at 200 miles after sitting for six months in the can am
Defender. Bought 20 gallons this last weekend.

Several bikes I have seen listed say need carb cleaning or float stuck.

There were a few kids ripping new Honda 110s straight hauling ass. Anytime a kid in my crew went down. They were there damn near instantly checking on them and helping if needed. Probably take a few trips before they are ready for a 110. But they sat on 1 yesterday at Parker Yamaha and the older ones it was a good fit.

I swear by the Kawi KLX110L's. If you want them shorter, don't get the L. There is so much aftermarket it is incredible, but they run forever. I will have a 110 till the day I die. I'm actually looking for another one so my son and I can do little expeditions. The Honda is good too, but not as much aftermarket and they don't have a tall version. I'm not a fan of the Yamaha's personally.

Depending on ages I would skip the 50's and go right to the 70's and maybe 100's.
Yeah. The 70s are more there size. But there is 1 3 year old. And my older Nieces kids there is a 3 and 5 year old. They don't go often but I figured the 50s are good for the younger ones to learn on. And we had 3-5 kids with us all weekend that are Echo neighbors. The RZR 200 taught a lot of kids to drive this last weekend. Had a line of kids waiting each day.

I got riding gear. Was just looking at it in the shed yesterday. Sold the bikes and won’t get going back into it. Plus the kids have all grown. Give me a week or so. I’m down in LB on most Tuesdays.

Damn wish I saw this earlier. My cousin just sold an Xr 50 but could have got a deal on it.

I bought it new in 03 1250 bucks sold to a friend 10 years ago for 500 deal was if he sells it it has to be offered to our group for same price. My cousin wanted it he got it and I had chance to get it back today before he sold it. If none of us bought last person was free to sell for going price.

I passed as I have too much crap already so he sold it this afternoon.

run nothing but non-ethanol fuel in them or keep a spare carb handy. We have a Honda CRF50, a CRF70 and a CRF110 and the only dependable one out of the bunch is the fuel-injected 110. :)

Have a 08 ttr110 for my girls never any problems and it’s been ridden a lot by adults! Bought it from a friend two years ago we used to ride the shit out of it around camp. He’s had the whole fleet of 110s klx, ttr, crf, he let me pick the one I wanted only reason I picked the ttr was because it’s the one I road the most when we’d camp together. You really can’t go wrong with any of them.

Any of the big 3 will work, but I would recommend Honda for the 50's and 70's, they seem lighter and kids seem to do better on them out the gate. More aftermarket if you wanna upgrade them also.

The Kawasaki 110 is the king of 110's, at least it used to be.

Our oldest Daughter has been riding with me since she was 7 or so. She is now 29 and rides a Husky FE 250. She is a bit faster than me these days..

This is her the night we picked the bike up. She’s 5’3” and we had it lowered.

One of these days I gotta part ways with my daughters bikes. 2 crf50’s and the oldest has a crf70. At most 2 of them have 10 miles on them? One of the 50’s maybe 2 miles. Having
3 girls I never got time for 1 on 1 time to teach and have them practice. They’ve been stored in the house the whole time. Lol.

Best part is I pulled all of my Baja designs dual sport kit off my xr650 and plated all 3 bikes.
I figured it would be fun campground bikes having plates. My nephew once told me these would be worth north of 3500 each. Crazy if that’s true.

I grew up on an SL70…. Honda makes good stuff.

I found a like new CRF 70 for $1900. Like new crf 50 for $2000

I bought a crf 50 in 05 or so for $900 otd. With covid pricing 3 years ago friend paid $2600 otd.

You in the Southbay I will buy all 3 for fair price.

Yeah, I ran my 110's on race gas and never had an issue, but they were definitely way rich. Started running pump gas and they ran better, more lean, but I just had to clean the carb and it was full of white pasty powder after a few months.

I was thinking about this one. I just don't have much space left. Bikes will fit on the side of gold cart in my conex.

My nephew who I thought wouldn't like the electric dirt bike did great on it. He can't even ride a bicycle and won't try after giving up. After a few days watching him get better I decided to buy them the dirtbikes. He likes it and is trying. It's a win on my part. Going to work with him on the bicycle one of these days.

I seriously miss these days of young discovery and seeing them excel. That said My daughter still has her Zuki LT450 quad (24 yr old) and my son 2001 CR 250.

Now its forever college and 100 dollar bills.

Our off-roading group is moving on to Jeep stuff so when those kids grow up and really want to haul the mail let me know.

Hmmm… My sons bikes in order
We had TTR 90, KX 65, then RM 85, then KTM 150, RM 450, Several KTM 300’s…( 2007, 11, 16 Six Days)…

Thats not counting my daughters or my bikes…

The only time running the bowl dry doesn’t work, is when the “fuel valve” leaks into the fuel bowl… meaning you need to replace the fuel valve.

All I can say thats worked for us for 20 plus years…

Another thing we would for very long storage, was remove the fuel tank, and drain it, and flip it upside down to prevent fuel evaporation/sludge in the tank… My son did that on his bikes, but he is not a normal kid. He was getting paid to wrench on bikes when he was 12… not joking. Doing full engine/tranny rebuilds by the time he was 16…

Agreed...the hard part for me is letting them excel LOL...my son has been riding for a while, started on 50's, now has a 110 and a 65...we go to the track once in a while, but mostly just desert riding...he is a pretty good rider, but I have been putting off him going on a long boys ride for a while, we normally just do shorter rides and then when we do long rides he jumps in one of the sxs's....this last trip, he convinced me to let him go on the big boys ride...I was pretty nervous the whole time because there are some pretty deep sand areas, and big hill climbs with no forgiveness on either side of the trails....that being said he did great...the last pic he had stalled it on a hill and was able to get back going come down and make a faster run at it....

Ohhhh Hell Yes…

Thats exactly how my son progressed….

By the time he was 16,,, effff meee… that kid was fast… I mean stupid fast… but always in control and rarely laid the bike down.

I cant tell you how many times, Living in Murrieta Ca… The middle of August…
Waking up at 3am, on the road at 4am to drive to Barstow…. Have the bikes offloaded and ready to ride, buy grey light… and off we would go.

Why… cause its 65degrees in Barstow at 6am,,,, ride till lunch time, and its climbing to 90 plus…. Load up the bikes and head home.. Son would sleep the entire way… Countless times when my kids where going up. They are now 24 and 25 years old… Still riding bikes, and went to the UTV Take Over with me a few months ago… Took their Dirtbikes, and I was in my SXS…

Glad you asked the question cause reading these responses is helping me with everyone’s experiences. My soon to be 16 rear old boy has ridden quads since that’s what I grew up on and only taught him on 4 wheels. He has been riding a yfz450r for the last couple years in Glamis but he has been bugging to go to two wheels. Since he has been doing great in school, I am going to cave and get him one for his birthday. So much to choose from but have it narrowed down to Honda or Yamaha 250 but figuring exact model is the tough part haha. Will probably register in AZ to get around the sticker issue if we go new.

Used 4 strokes are ticking time bombs, especially the 250's, unless you get something that has some well documented maintenance or somebody you know that takes care of stuff...if you have the means, I would definitely go with something new

This!

I’ve run my extra C-12 through my lawn mower for ever. Mostly 2 stroke pre mix.
In 25 years I’ve never been inside the carb.

My Raptor 660 I just run pump gas.
If it sits more than a year and a half (or 6 months in the heat) the fuel in the bowls evaporated leaving a yellow chalky residue. Such a pain in the ass.

All I know is you’ve got to be Uncle of the Year!
This!!

In the small bikes it's hard to beat a Honda. Started our kids at 7 and 3 on an XR70 and XR50. This was 2001. Our son at 3 was too small for the 50, and they didn't have the training wheels like they have now so we put him on a little chinese quad until he could ride the 50. We also had a KX65, a CR80, and a couple KX250's for them as they progressed.
Always closed the fuel petcock and ran them out of gas whenever they're going to sit (even for a week or 2), NEVER had starting/carb issues.

DSC00472.JPG

Our daughter could outride all of the boys in camp. She ended up liking the quad and baja more than 2 wheels tho.

I'm just here to vote Honda and Yamaha also. Most of these I recently got rid of when my kids outgrew. You can NEVER have enough mini-bikes😄 I'm looking for another fat tire BW 80 to put an electric start 140cc motor in.

2020-07-18 19.19.17.jpg

If you don't get crf/xr 70s,80, or 100s there is a big jump to the 110. My knees can't hang on 50's anymore. If you want to ride the bike, I love my CRF110. Electric start with efi is the only way to pitbike. My wife's CRF125 pictured behind it has a clutch and is no fun when you can't hold a drink and putt around.

Both great 250’s, I’d keep an eye out for KTM or Husqvarna also. My KTM’s have been bulletproof.

The TTR 125L is a great bike when they're big enough. My son is finally tall enough to ride his with confidence, and he's been ripping it up!

1704407183675.png

My 8 year old daughter was able lean it over on one foot, and learn to use the clutch and ride it.

1704407369455.png

She cant touch the ground to save her life, but she loves it! She's ready to move up from the CRF70 to something bigger, but wants a clutch. Was thinging about getting her the small wheel version, it's a few inches lower.

I am a Honda guy but we got a basket case KLX110. dint run, tires were flat, seat torn looked like it had been through the war. I got a carb kit and said lets see what happens. the thing fired up first kick and my girls and I have been beating the crap out of it for 5 years. its the one bike I dont ever have to work on. The one way bearing for the kickstarter is going out but thats it.

I sometimes think about stripping it down and doing it all up but we have so much fun because we dont care how it looks.
