This is the aftermath of a lower from a guy I know. Was cruising 55 mph and..
Damn I always wonder about that, will my insurance cover a blown drive like they say. Anyone go through this?Insurance will cover it.

It's actually the new shaft-less drive. Everything is wireless these daysDam, Hope that's not a new dual down shaft drive.
Why would the pinion explode?

No-toothbluetooth
I was going the same speed when mine exploded.
It's not the speed it's the engine torque that kills drives. You have to make sure not to cruise in the RPM range where your motor makes its peak torque curve.
I think what killed mine was unexpected passengers on my boat for a 200 mile run, I had the wrong props for the weight and it was making max torque trying to get on plane multiple times. It really struggled to plane out.
That's true too. I used to take forever to plane trying not to rev the motor past 4000 and over torque the drive. Used to just slowly roll it over.
I think the 600SCI makes max torque at 3500 ( not positive) and it was just sitting right there for a long time trying to plane.
Are those housings sand cast or investment cast or ? Failures like this could be a result (at least partial) of a defect in the casting
Yea that's not good. My Teague 825 was like 4400 I think for max torque back when I had it and never used to cruise in that RPM range.
Instant jet bote.
Like said above, Collision with something insurance would cover it if you had collision coverage, mechanical no.

Whole truth and nothing but. Spot on.Insurance will cover it once... then drop you and you will PAY for this repair 10x over in the form of inflated premiums at the next company that will pick you up.. Unless its absolutely out of your means to repair , DONT file a claim...
I filed one marine claim in my life 2 years ago...... THE ABSOLUTLE worst decision ... That's my PSA for today.
Saturday? Big beautiful red boat? We just pulled our boat out of the water, at the Havasu Marina, as this boat was getting pulled out. Gave them a few plastic trash bags to to catch the oil that was draining from the bottom....was surprised there was any left considering he was towed into the marina...figured it would have drained out in the water? Felt so bad for the guy!
