Absolutely beautiful. Was the water level low? I too hope to make it there one of these days.

The water level, from what I was told was about 30' below max. The cut was open. The place is amazing. I have been to Mead, Havasu, Mojave and Parker. And as far as beauty goes, Powell is in another league. Only Bad thing, and not realy bad, just kinda scarey for me was 40 miles on the water between gas stations.

Like no place on Earth.:thumbsup

The same group getting the closeures at Glamis and Pismo is working hard to get the Glen Canyon dam removed BTW.
First step, drain the lake is their plan.

As long as there are people in Vegas and Southern Cali,, Glen Canyon Dam will be here. All these enviroweenies talk big about it, but have absolutely no reputable scientific backing for it.

In 2002, for Earth Day, the Sierra club organized a protest at Glen Canyon Dam in support of draining the lake and removing the dam. The turnout in support of the Sierra club was comical. There were actually more law enforcement personnel on site to keep the peace than there were enviromental protesters. If I remember right, there were somewhere around 60 pro Sierra Club people and about 1800 pro lake demonstrators (a lot of the town residents were there to lend thier support of the lake).

It's funny to hear the results of all these experiments and studies that are done in the name of enviromental conciousness. Prime example is the "flush" they did a few years back. It was supposed to create all these pools to help the humpback chub spawn (it's on the endangered species list) and wash out the predatory trout population between the dam and Lee's Ferry. The main result, which of course never made it to the mainstream news media, is that all the small fish and fingerlings were what was washed down river, hence damaging and destroying the one fish that the flushes were supposed to help. The real comical thing about the whole ordeal is that even after all the reports came in, the B.O.R. and the US Fish and Wildlife dept chose to do the same thing again this year.

OK,, I'm off my soap box now...

As far as the unique beauty of Lake Powell, there is nothing like it in the world, hence our decision to live here.

The lake is 66 feet below full pool. It came up about 30 feet in about as many days. It's peaked for the season at around 3633 or so (3700' MSL being full pool).

The good news is that the Castle Rock cut was opened for the first time in several years, shortening the run from Page to all places upstream.

Da gig hears ya ! Got a crapload of time on my hands but can't even afford to "pay attention"! I too want to hit Powell someday. Just about had a plan in hand last year to go in with da Family and rent a houseboat for a week. But as usual; if da gig plans it, they won't go! Someday; someday.....

Glad to hear the level has moved up that far.
I'm in the "Someday" crowd. Last time I saw the lake was 1977 :(

That looks like the large 5 to 7 finger :thumbsup cove I stayed in June '05 across from Rainbow bridge canyon. I was able to jetski :smackhead around in it all day w/ no disturbance. I can't wait for Powell Fest ' 08:beer Don't worry, I'm not bringing the jetski.

We stayed up and to the right from Face Canyon. And the spot was perfect except for 20 minutes of wind during a thunder storm.

We were about 16 miles down river from Dangling Rope.
About 33 miles down river from Rainbow Bridge Canyon.
