I was laid off this week and am on the hunt for a new job. My industry, Telecommunications has more opportunities in AZ than in SoCal at the moment and I am thinking about using this setback as a chance to move out of state.

For those of you who have experience, what is the typical process for getting a job out of state and having to coordinate a move? Does the typical two week start date still apply? Are companies willing to push the start date out a month to allow for the move? Should I expect to start immediately and live out of a hotel until I can move?

P.S. If anyone has any leads or would like my resume I have 14 years of Telecom OSP/ISP engineering & construction coordination experience.

Thank you in advance.

I would think all of this would be negotiable when you are interviewing. A company that won't give you the leeway you need to facilitate a move in a reasonable amount of time would be a red flag to move on to the next offer. A good company will go out of it's way to retain good employees.

I think it may be depending on what position you're going for. I know when I post jobs and people from out of state apply and say they are willing to relocate, I typically dont hire them. I dont want to be the reason someone up roots there life and if they dont work out I would feel pretty bad about it. So you may consider just changing your resume to match the area that your wanting to move to and you may get more headway.

I’m about a week ahead of you, but moving back to CA from TX.

Do you have any recruiting contacts in AZ? If not, get those ASAP. I assume you’re on LinkedIn.

It’s only been two weeks for me, but it seems much harder to get interviews in CA while being in TX. I have previous recruiting contacts in CA that say it’s going to be more difficult as well. Remote positions are drying up.

As far as start date, recruiters have me listing availability as ASAP. Putting a long length decreases my chances of getting a job. Be realistic, but don’t put up too many barriers to getting hired.

We are selling a house, which complicates things, but if you’re free and clear, why not just get your rental for the year to try it out. I wish we would have done that in TX, even though we’ll make some money on the sale. Ideally we sell the house and then move, but if it doesn’t sell in the next 2 months I’ll probably have to get over to CA, get our rental, and start interviewing from there.

Best of luck to you on the search.

Luckily we are only renting right now and are on a month to month lease.

I wouldn’t have a problem putting ASAP, as I could always live in a hotel for a couple weeks while I coordinate the move, it would be a stressful couple of weeks but no risk no reward.

The plan would be to move to AZ and rent a small house that we could afford on one income until we get a feel for the state and are confident in our decision. Getting a rental might be difficult without pay stubs is my concern.

I appreciate the advice, best of luck to you on your search as well.

My daughter received an offer from a company in NC, while she was still in AZ. They gave her 6 months to move and she worked remotely as a graphic designer until the time was up.

You never know unless you ask.

I moved to Az from Nv 8 years ago, got a job and left my home and family for about 90 days. I rented a studio apt and when my house sold I rented a house big enough for all of us. My house sold pretty quick so the whole process took 90 days or so. It was stressful but you gotta do what you gotta do, I didn't want to risk my new employment. In hindsight it was pretty easy and would not be afraid to do it again if the right offer came up. I like Az and am glad I made the change from Reno area.

Have you checked out Avondale? Growing fast and not too far from Phoenix where I imagine the work is

I still look all over. If I do go the AZ route we would probably rent in Surprise or Queen Creek just depending on where the job is.

Both are great places to live, but can result in some pretty long commutes depending on where you end up working. If you visit during the summer and are trying to judge travel times, add 50% to the commute for winter snowbird season traffic. Some CA transplants don’t seem to mind, and our traffic isn’t nearly as bad as SoCal- but it still gets bad from October-May.

I’m in Surprise, if you have any questions about the area feel free to ask or shoot a PM.

Home ownership might be easier than you think in Az, 5% down on a new build tract home and the builder pays all the closing costs. You can be a home owner for 25k out of pocket.

All my out of state moves included a moving package.

The last thing you want to do is throw out your back between jobs.

I received a complete move package from big 500 fortune company, in 2002. That included $15k to move the household, plus fuel and miles for two cars, and closing cost on the house. They put me up in a hotel for 90 days. Probably came out to $30k-$40k.

I suggest you find a headhunter that works your industry/field. They never charged me a fee. They got their money from the employer. 😉

That would be the goal, I’m still not sure where I’d want to live out there. If we did move we would probably rent for 6 months to a year while we explored and then buy a house.

Can we ask what would make you move back to CA?

Family, friends, weather, outdoor activities, $50k-$100k in extra income for a comparable position for me and $25k-$50k for my wife, better job market, etc. Our move was mostly temporary for tax purposes, and unfortunately this termination throws a wrench into the plan.

Ideally, we get a house in a free state for 6 months + 1 day once I can afford it and keep the house in CA for the summer. I’m not sure if the primary house will be TX but I love it here late Oct-Mar. Utah may be better with the mountains and outdoors, but that’s a few years away.

I left CA for a telecom job in AZ. The company was great and flexible with the start date.

Don’t want to discourage you but the move was way harder than I had thought. Everyone says oh yeah why don’t you just move out of state. It’s actually a bit more difficult. Trying to buy/rent a house without a job is tough. Pretty much need to secure a job, secure housing and then move all of your stuff.

The hotel/RV route is probably the way to go while you start the new job and secure housing.

Tillson always seems to be looking for good people and they are a good company to work for.

Not sure if the pay in AZ will be what you are looking for but there are a ton of telecom openings statewide. Message me if you want me to put you in touch with some people.

If you do move to AZ I would negotiate so they pay for your moving expenses. Don't know exactky how you're compensated but ask for a 6 month guarantee

Hey @attitude sorry about the job. I'm no help with high tech jobs, or planning moves. We were more the "wing and a prayer" types. It worked, but we had no choice but to make it work. I'm a believer in all things happen for a reason. Something better you may have never thought of may fall in your lap.

Good luck!

I appreciate that! I am right there with you. Everything happens for a reason and I have been very lucky in life. My spirits are high.

The amount of people who have reached out from both RDP and my personal/work life is truly humbling.

There's a lot of good people here, and from damn near every trade and service imaginable. Boating and fun stuff may be the common threads, but a huge variety of how people pay for it 🤣

You and I are in the exact same boat. They are closing my facility very soon. I have applied all over the western states, and getting an interview has been tough. Closest job in Socal that is in the hunt is 127 miles away....wife wants to keep our home, but that kind of commute is insane. Good luck, all of us job hunters need it right now!

We are currently in this process, now. We purchased an enclosed trailer and have made a few trips already. BUY boxes for the move so you can actually pack things and organize the move. I probably could have eliminated a trip with that in mind. We also eliminated most large things. For work, I changed my linkdin & resume to AZ and told the companies i was already in the process of moving into the area. Prepare yourself for second-guessing some decisions. We decided on our place based on the neighborhood, not proximity to anything or even meeting anyone. I also was realistic in what i was willing to offer to a company, but more than happy to do hybrid, to ensure i had some work from home options. It also sounds easy to spend time away from the family to get things started, but it was/has been harder than i thought. With all that being said.. AZ has been awesome...

We didn’t move out of state but when we bought the Norco house I was living in BHC and working in Vegas. It was much harder than I thought. I had a lot of doubt going on at the time but good friends like @jeepdog helped me get through it. Looking back, it was worth it because I’m super happy with how things have turned out. My wife basically moved a house by herself though. Pretty amazing woman to put up with everything. She took a chance on me for sure, hope she’s happy with the life weve built together, I know I am.

A little update.

I have two interviews scheduled for Monday, one for an AZ job one for another CA job.

My previous employer also reached out offering my old job back which was extremely nice of him.

As of now all options are on the table, we’ll see what happens.

Thank you again to everyone who has reached out.

I think this is a blessing in disguise. You’ve been wanting to move to PHX area. Now you have an excuse. Bummer that your house purchase will get pushed back even more, but it’s a step in the right direction. Good luck.

And sorry, I have no experience with your situation to advise.

Being out of work sucks man!
Sorry to hear it.

I don't know if the Company that I work for would even fit into your "wheel house" of shit you could or want to do.
But
I have a similar-ish story.

The place I landed at in AZ is looking for people.
And it is in the Construction industry.

You can PM me your digits if you want and, I can fill you in........because WTFK!
(That's: Who The Fuck Knows) 😁

Good luck with the job search. As words of encouragement, every time I got sacked, ended up with a better job and more money. It just always seems to work out for people who are ambitious. However, it sucks when you’re out of a job, I remember the stress vividly.

Our worst was when I was 41 years old, two kids under the age of 3, living temporarily in my in-laws basement. Top that for rock bottom😁

All worked out fine in the end and retired early.

Oh, and as was said by others, every out-of-state move had a moving package by the new employer.

I was offered the job in AZ that I interviewed for, which I have accepted.

This has not been an easy couple of days, my fiancée is literally sick to her stomach for having to turn our lives upside down on such short notice especially because it affects our kids.

I’m off to take a drug test and send my 30 day notice to my landlord.

This will be a wild month, wish me luck.

How old are your kids? Just remember kids are resilient and they will adapt. Is it in the Phoenix area or?

2.5 and 5 years old.

The job is on the south side of Phoenix.
I have a 4 year old, and some other inmates also have little kids around the valley. Lot's of splash pads and good activities. My prior landlord agency was not a bad one, would you like their contact? They specialize in nicer single family homes.

That’s good to know, we are worried about new friends. Right now every neighbor we have is awesome and they all have kids around the same age. It’s not uncommon to see us out playing in our Cul-de-sac until 10:00pm during the summer.

I’m not sure how nice the home she landlord agency represents but my budget is $2200. We are going to try and shoot out there Sunday and Monday to look around the south east part.

Where is your job at, there are some bad areas on the south side of Phoenix. Think about your commute, you should be able to find a nice neighborhood within 20 minutes from your work.

Chandler, I’m thinking we’ll end up in Gilbert or Queen Creek
