Neighbors have a Jeep Willys Edition. A few days ago he was having an issue where the Jeep wouldn't start. He called AAA to have them come out and check the battery and possibly replace it. After AAA left we noticed that all the dash lights and headlights were on. He was not able to shut any of the lights off or even get it out of park. AAA battery service recommended having it towed to the dealer. AAA flatbead came out and they were also unsuccessful in getting it out of park to tow it so they called another tow truck. I was just talking with the neighbor asking about their Jeep and he said the autostart stop battery appears to be the culprit. I was surprised to learn that some Jeeps have dual batteries (1 for all electronics and 1 for the auto start stop feature). Was news to me since thought all cars just used the one battery for everything like my wife's Honda Pilot and my Honda Accord.

Dealer quoting them about $700 to replace that little battery. The regular battery is testing good. Just surprised Jeep didn't just put a larger AGM battery int hem to cover everything.

Mags, carbs and clutch pedals.. solutions to modern problems.

that was my thought, why doesnt he just move the wiggle stick in the console to the middle position. I didnt even know they made automatic Jeeps :)

They are hoping that Jeep will pick up the tab since the warranty just expired a few days ago

It's also emission related. Auto Stop/Start is part of the emission cert. Should have the 100k coverage. Wouldn't swear to it.

The 2nd battery is 48 volt. It is technically a mild hybrid as the starter generator puts power back into the drive-train as well.

yep...huge issue they all die and way before you would expect.

its not a hard diy and you can actually bypass it. (youtube videos)

My FIL gladiators went out in less than 2 years with 10k miles.

I thought i was having an issue on my 2021 but I'm a dummy. Turns out the newer 3.6 jeeps all have the e-torque hybrid system and eliminate that small battery and instead have a big ol 48v liquid cooled one mounted underneath in the rear.

We’re having trouble with our Gladiator right now. The auto start won’t work when it’s cold. I need to get it in to the dealer. It should still be under warranty.

It has a motorcycle type battery under the fuse box behind the fullsize battery that dies and criples the Jeep. I have been reading up and most just remove the small battery and jump it to the big battery. I already bought an autostop eliminator for mine so I dont need the 2nd battery.

Interesting location and idea. Thinking might have been easier to have it under the seat. Looks like you might have to go through the wheel well to get it out. I will let him know that the battery can be eliminated. Still think its an odd idea to have a tiny separate battery for this system.

Or put the t-case in neutral 🤷🏻‍♂️
True story... Buddy bought a square body blazer, first 4x4 and knew nothing other than it looked cool. Called me up all disturbed and shit about his new purchase thinking the tranny blew. I tried explaining the extra shifter on the floor, ended up just driving over and taking the 5 seconds to put it back in gear... The shit talking was priceless.

The auto start/stop on my daughter's new jeep didn't work. Dealer said drive it for a few hours to charge battery. Sure enough it started working on its own.

How many of you know that its supposed to be pronounced Will-iss, not Will-ees?

That was John Willys's name, and in the 40s and 50s that's how it was pronounced. After the company folded the name became bastardized.

My back hurts looking at those old Willy's. Bad ass little machines, but you better have some ibuprofen on standby.

Just got back from 4 wheeling, buddy had a new to him diesel gladiator. It just turn off while wheeling and he then noticed the battery voltage was swinging wildly between 12.2 and 13.8 but mostly staying in the 12’s.
