Today is Tamale day at our house. All the girls from both sides of the family are coming over at noon to start making Tamales. Normally it’s my wife’s side of the family but both sides are really close to each other so my wife invited my mom and sisters over too.

I love having people over our house so all the guys are coming over too and we’re going to watch football and have a great time.

My wife prepped the banana leaves on Thursday and they will be making about 130 tamales.

I noticed Guatemalan and costs rican style with the banana leaves instead of corn. Those are grub!! Usually less masa.

Looks like you’re having a great time. 👍

Merry Christmas to you guys. Hope to see you soon brother.

Merry Christmas Shin family.

Making tamales is soooo much more than just the cooking of tamales. Tamales are just the vessel to breaking bread and building lifelong relationships across multiple generations.

Love this time of year and Tamale day, great pics!

Ok, I'm going full NorCal white boy here... I've never had a tamale and don't know the first thing about them. Can you explain what they are? Do you eat the outside of it? What is the white stuff that goes in them? How are they cooked? Etc...

@Tank post kind of cleared it up but I always thought it was corn husks used to wrap. So I guess that banana leaves are used as well. 👍

Don't feel bad. My first tamale I took a bite and tried to eat the corn husk. Didn't know you're supposed to unwrap them first.

Tamales are essentially seasoned meat (and sometimes veggies or cheese) wrapped in corn masa (the same stuff as uncooked corn tortillas) and then pot steamed in corn husks to cook the corn. There are regional differences like the banana leaves mentioned in the thread for Central American ones instead of corn husks.
