Depends on the style of house.....but for your average remodel it’s not in style, everyone is pushing contemporary again.

Right now the fad is white full overlay euro cabinets, white quartz tops, grey-toned flooring throughout the house and white-boxed rooms with minimal trim of any kind.

Crown molding and wainscoting go hand in hand, always will.
Properly done and not the home-depo insta crap, it is an art few guys will take the time to do now unless paid well.
I wouldn't put it in a typical box house. It is reserved for Formal rooms.

Im going contemporary with crown. I like the glossy white trim.

So the reason I ask is because I just spent upwards of $3K having it installed. Where our walls met our ceilings was fucked. We are having the the house painted this week and I find your pic very interesting because the current color is what your dining room looks like and the new color is what your kitchen looks like.

I was never a big fan of the gigantic mouldings they put in unless you had at least a 10' ceiling.
Tastefully done it's pleasing to the eye but holy cow the late 90s and early 2000s there was some gaudy stuff put up.
I actually remodeled my livingroom in 2000 with plans to add crown but never got around to it...lol

I did a bunch of houses in Westlake Village between 99-2002. I remember doing 3-tier crown :D...looked like a molding supply house showcase

I was thinking you better get the bendable rubber kind if you were doing a little custom work on that Smart car.

Still offered as an option on new homes, generally upper end in Las Vegas.

In my opinion if it's done right it will never go "out of style." Living room has a 12' ceiling and 10' ceiling in dining room. When I did mine I used the 6" baseboard on the wall and the ceiling and put a piece of 3" crown in the middle. Makes it look like a solid piece of 12" crown. Very cost effective and a lot less money than buying 12" crown.

Looks like you have two choices, get the tooth pulled or get the crown. If you decide on the crown then all that's left is what material to go with. Thought this thread needed some side ways action...

And my name (Lawrence) means “laurel CROWNED”, so I wear my crown on my head.

It depends on the home really...I've seen some details in homes where they space the crown off of the wall about an 1/4" the reason for that is they hide the supply and return behind it, so there's no vents to look at. Those are very expensive homes though.

I agree that if done correctly it works. It is really fitting in our 80 year old craftsmen style. Now if it is a tract or modern it might be a different story.

Keep in mind that if your ceiling or walls are out you might have to float the area. I did that on our house. Not a big deal but if you want it to look right it has to be right.

You can always go Florida style, see that little thin black line in the ceiling? That's the A/C and Heating...also there's speakers in the ceiling that get plastered over, probably the best sound system in I've ever heard and you have no idea where the speakers are located.

What i saw in trends over the last couple of years, was less sheen and/or a 4th color in between the cieling and the wall.

I am not so much of a fan of th3 4th color, but steping down a sheen or two from the sheen of thr trim does work if its not straight white ( wbich you should never use)

If you really want some help, i know of a very good interior designer that is right up the road from you ( on douglas) and its a free service.

Really, who gives a shit?

Styles change constantly. Run what You like and be done with it. I have it in my kitchen, Living room and entry way.

I like it. And don't give a shit if anyone else does, or not!

:p

Wife wants crown molding. I just can’t justify the cost right now. She wanted the kitchen cabinets updated (20 yrs old )and likes the wainscoting. So since a 10k - 15k plus remodel wasn’t in the cards either. I did the redneck do it yourself inserts. Added some glass inserts a little bit ago. Fresh paint. All in all I’m quite pleased with our effort. Definitely not professional but much nicer than it was.

Nicely done!! I always like to take a general overall design of a high end home and find a cost effective way to creat the look. It is crazy to see how some people flip out and think that it costs 10 times more than it did.

Is that a vodka cranberry?

Thank you.
Cost us about a grand total. Even got a little table saw out of the deal[emoji106]. And yes. What’s left of it. [emoji38].

Largest crown I've installed in a residence is 32'' and a Church with 48''.
Crown moulding will never go out of style. I never understood 8'' base in a 2k sq. house though.

I always love the 12" crown and 8" base on an 8' cieling. Makes the wall looks like 3' tall. On an 8' cieling 6 is pushing it. Notjing wrong with 3.25"

Call me old fashioned, but I still like crown molding, and I like cased windows in a house.

Honestly, do what suits your tastes Greg because if you and your wife like it it doesn't matter one iota what anyone else thinks....they don't live there.
