Saw this posted last week on Instagram, and I got to get everyone's opinions.

Why do people try to modernize classic boats?
I feel that the old school is so much better and fits the styling.

I get it. Everyone has different tastes, I just see a trend happening.

What do you guys like?

Sorry if this is a members boat, Im sure it was expensive ! 😆

I am in the modernize, but subtly crowd. The headrests and diamond stitch are too much for me, and the upholstery is too busy and doesnt go with the gel. Modern shapes with throwback colors and simple stitching would have been my direction.

2 buckets and a bench should not cost more than $1000. I'll take whatever doesn't cost more than $1000. It makes no difference to me what it looks like....90% of the time they have towels covering them up anyway....and the expensive cushions blow out just as good as the cheap ones on the highway lol.

I love diamond stiching, but that particular pattern doesnt fit the boat to me and i dont care for the style of seats either. I would of kept with the style of the boat and maybe "modernized it" a touch.

I can only imagine what this cost! I'm gonna take a stab at 8-9k?

I’m the same.. but emphasis on the subtly. I’m not sure I’d put the new style seats in an older boat, but I’d want something different than the og style.. lol

I was looking at these photos the other day I thought it came out nice, but agree something needs to change with the engine hatch

I like it, My Eagle 25 needs the interior redone and I'm not sure if I'll keep it the same or go with something like that dude did.

yeah, because Martinez.

I've never paid that much for a whole boat.

Last years I put $1800 (2 buckets and a bench lol....and I built/glassed up the frames) and a $1400 jackplate on a $5000 boat. 20 years ago I had the same interior done, much nicer actually, for $450. $100 in materials and an old mexican lady sitting in front of a sewing machine for a few hours shouldn't cost $1800.

Keeping a tweaker in a motorhome out front for security is included in the cost😉

I have an 08 236. As far as I know it's the last 236 ever built and also the only one ever built with high back buckets, so I don't really mind the seats, I just think the pattern is too busy and the black don't work.

I wouldn’t have gone black accents I don’t see black anywhere else on the boat. Engine hatch doesn’t match.

High back don’t flow. And diamond stitching is to new.

Bench headrest don’t flow

Change the black to pink or something and it would be a lot better.

that engine hatch.

But older boats can use a minor update. Maybe keep the original lay out but change color design pattern slightly. Take the tuck and roll out go smooth etc.

IMO this doesn’t fit this boat but then again it’s their boat and custom to them.

Boats should be comfortable and functional. Looks can either be a primary or secondary consideration but beauty is very subjective.

I grew up with tuck and roll, and we had a few boats we converted from that to flat with piping. The conversion was easier to clean but also seemed to get dirty faster.

We don't have any interiors that have gone off the deep end with the alcantera and diamond stitching and all the latest trends. I don't think I can handle going that far when I think about modernization.

Even if we built a new boat I don't think id entertain it.

Its a personal choice and everyone is different. Like it or hate it, its what the owner wanted to see.

This goes back to why the manufacturers don't post build threads anymore. Everyone weighs in with their opinion and forgets that custom boats are built to suit the owners tastes and styles. Lock those threads to manufacturer comments only. We can debate the choices in the lounge without polluting the build thread.

I sort of like it. They kept the pink out. Rear headrest’s no, should have been one all the way across. Redid the hatch with old style, no. I prefer less on the hatch. Not really diamond as there’s only four on each seat. I’m totally against top stitching, that will be the first point of failure.
But it’s nice.

I modernized my 99 Daytona with diamonds, high backs, and inlays as the thought process is “if I’m gonna pay 10k plus on an interior, I don’t want the original checkerboard shit on it. I want it to look updated.”

High backs are way more comfortable.

Try having dcb or eliminator quite a new interior… shit is wild

Above my paygrade. I had eliminator quote me a bare single color gel 19 daytona 10 years ago....I wanna say it was in the neighborhood of $30K. Shoemaker at GS would do it for $10K at that time. They're nuts.

I'd cast my vote on RD Sux if it was an option. The modern interior sometimes fits the old school boats. I wouldn't say that for every fit though. I dig the Schiada modern upholstery on a classic with the engraved interior.

I wouldn't say the same for a modern boat with an old school interior though.

I think every boat has a style. I'm actually happy with my minimalist interior. We'll go and swim in a cove, so I have people on the swim step or hatch drying themselves off. If I had one of the fancier interiors I'd be losing my mind.

The modern looks like a lot to clean, there’s lots of crevices to get stuff caught in. The stitching is a bit much, if they would have integrated the pain theme into the center of the seats I think it would have tied it together more

And where are the cup holders!

Not a fan of the new interior, the old version fit the boat better.
Then again I’m not a fan of most of the “new” graphics styles these days.
Especially on a 21 Daytona or any of the old classics be it a Daytona or a Schiada etc.
Classic motifs on classic boats just fit.

I am not a fan of the new style even on new boats. I don’t like all the crazy stitching or materials. Robert and I had a debate on what to do with the Daytona. I was trying to find a picture of what the original one looked like. Thinking it might have been the tuck and roll upholstery, and he hates that. So, we settled on a mostly all white design with clean lines whenever we do it. I don’t think an 88 boat should look like a 2025 boat. I want the feeling of when I was a kid in my dad’s boat.

I think this was a members boat, but we are going to do something similar to this

looks okay but too modern for my personal taste. I would have gone the inbetween route(what was popular like 10-15 years ago vs. right now).

Side note, can we please normalize mostly white interiors again? Something about the early 2000’s white with a few simple stripes seems to be the most timeless to me. Especially considering a majority of the hulls still being produced come from that era.

Silver/grey/carbon/offwhite/tan interiors of today just look off IMO.

X100000 on Renè at Riverside.

He did the interior on our 91 Cole, including new wood. I’d like to think we’ve got a perfect mix of period correct but with a more comfortable and updated flare. I think he hit it outta the park with being right in between new and old.

The interior should match the look of the boat. If it’s a 90s boat with 90s colors, keep it 90s style. Same goes for a 70s day cruiser. I remember eliminator did a couple of restorations a couple years ago and did modern interior in a boat with 70s faux wood in the gel coat I thought it looked all out of sorts.

I just picked up an early 90s boat and my favorite part of it is the original 90s interior that fits the period of the boat.

Did most mine in a 96 Tige, plain white, cushions ran about 1000, engine hatch I think $800 or so, back seat another $1000, wanted another 2500 for side panels and driver seat, left the old ones in lol
