That term Anasazi is a Navajo word meaning ancient enemy.
The modern pueblo people don't want to be called that, nor do they want their ancestors called that and prefer the (PC ) term Ancient Puebloan.
The rangers on the tour claim modern natives visit and if asked what they want visitors to know about the people who built and lived in the various dwellings along the mesa... They said to say "We're still here"
One of the sites, and I believe there are 7 or 8? One is closed to visitors pending a geological survey. Apparently a section of overhanging cliff fell off and they suspect more may fall soon.
Personally, I think this threat combined with no running water source other than seasonal monsoon and a very slow seep at the back of a couple dwellings ran them off.
They moved closer to water and doubled down on their farming...because they could. They had water now and didn't have to rely on check dams and the luck of a monsoon.
Above the Castle house dwelling is a large crack, there are a few sticks stuck in the crack.
They were placed by the natives. An early warning indicator if you will. Crack gets bigger=stick falls out.
Who's to say they didn't have more sticks up there? One day a stick fell and they said...Time to go!
