Gather round, Inmates.....Let JBB show you how it's done.....:p...

So, I have been wanting a Kamado style Egg smoker/grill for quite a while....Big green egg is the most recognized brand, but they are pricey, and so are all the accessories to go with it.
Lately Ace Hardware has become a Green Egg retailer, so a while ago I go in and price a Large Egg.....side tables, Nest for it to sit in, and a bag of charcoal....Guy says...."Total is $1031"........:hmm..I decline...

So I start researching alternate eggs ...One thru a connection at work, called the Primo...basically a more oval rendition of the Green Egg, and the Vision, which appears to be a direct copy of the Egg, and sold thru Home Depot....I narrow it down to the Green Egg and the Vision...They appear to be of the same material, thickness ect....A local Home Depot got a shipment of 25 of them and sold out in 2 days at $699 each...This, compared to the Green Egg was a deal, because it included a second cooking rack, the nest, the side tables and a nice cover at no extra charge. You pay for each of these when you buy a green egg.

Two weeks ago I get an Email Ad from Ace Hardware, offering 20% off of anything in the store, no exclusions or limitations....:thumbsup...I walk in and ask the guy about the large green egg, nest, side tables, and 2nd rack....Guy tells me we are offering $100 off all eggs, end of season sale...Total this time came to $891....I present my 20% off coupon and ask if I can use it, and he frowns, gets his calculator out and says no way...That would lower the price to around $700, and I would be going in the hole...(sure)....I said, but you sent me this coupon....He said yes, but all Ace Hardwares are independantly owned and operated, and I have the right to refuse my own coupon, and Im going to do just that....

I leave Ace Hardware, after telling the manager I was working with, that I was going to complain, and I email Corporate cust. service....They verified that each store has the right to refuse any coupon, even their own, and they have no control over that, but that were forwarding my complaint to the stores owner, and he would be in touch...

The next day I call home Depot, and ask if I could use my 20% off coupon from Ace on one of their Vision Eggs, they said they would be happy to, as long as I email the ad I got from ace to them. They also said they would truck freight it to my door for free...

Two days later the Ace store owner calls me, and I relayed my story of his competition letting me use his coupon for their egg...He says.."we dont consider Home Depot to be our competition, because we offer a more genuine helpful, shopping experience...with our knowledgeble staff...I wondered aloud if that would explain why his parking lot is always empty, and Home Depot's is always full...:hmm..Nonetheless I wished him well, and told him I would not shop there anymore, but please keep me on the coupon mailing list, so that I could use them at his (non) competition....(lol...I got another ace email coupon just this morning)

Yesterday the Vision egg arrives, very well packed in strong cardboard...I open it up, after getting it on my deck....and on the outside there are 2 small spots where the ceramic has chipped....pretty unsightly to me, so I called Home Depot customer service and explain what I found, I also took a few pics and emailed them to her. I asked in my email for $150 off due to the unsightly chips, and 30 minutes ago I received an email back approving my additional $150 discount....A few dabs of black paint and the chips will be history...

Tonight the vision egg will be assembled......Let the cooking begin...:p

IMO, he's right. My experience has been ACE usually has the tough to find items along with superb customer service and product/project knowledge. They charge for it and will always be higher than Home Depot however. Every now and then I will buy easy/cheap stuff from Home Depot. The experience is lacking when I feel I know much more about the store/products than the employees do. I'm waiting for the day that a Home Depot employee will walk up to me and ask me where the plumbing department is. ;)

Lowes is nice. Wish I had one near me.

Oh, and make my burger a double with bleu cheese. Cooked Meduim Rare. Thanks!

There are 2 lowes and 2 Home Depots within 5 miles of the Ace store Im referring to...Ace use to have a better selection of hardware..( nuts bolts, ect) but lately Lowes has stepped it up and is as good or better in that dept...

Medium rare....noted.

I like Lowes. I'd rather take my business there or ACE. Lowes is still a bit too far for me.

How's that burger coming along? Hold the lettuce please.

OK, if you're going to be that smug about it and not even infract me for the last post, hook us up with a review of this thing. Let us know if it's worth having and how it works.

We don't seem to get the Vision in Canada. I found the Primo for $768.

The Primo doesn't look as nice as the Vision, though. I could run down to Minot but I'm guessing the Vision isn't going to fit in the hatch of my Golf.

You suck. :thumbsdown

Help me understand this deal.

Someone mentioned water. Where does the water go? Is there a pan in the bottom where the heat is to steam the food?

What's the difference between this item and a globe BBQ?

You can use a water pan and smoke slow at low temp, or grill at whatever temp you like..The idea is the thickness keeps the heat and moisture in look ....here

The Vision Kamado's simplicity in design and operation make even the most modest cook the preeminent chef of the neighborhood!

They are kinda pricey.....are they worth it?

Seems a lot for a charcoal grill and smoker. How do you get the charcoal to last for smoking? All my friends have gas powered smokers and they add wood chips.
