No more insurance in state, so will be all state issued = higher taxes/fees?

Malibu will never be the same in our lifetime. It took years and years to get coastal commission approval to build or remodel anything on the water front. They’re fuckin NAZIS!! now you’re going to have a somewhat small agency, that specifically wants to eradicate any buildings along the coast overseeing 100’s if not thousands of permit requests. Good fuckin luck!!!

Ca insurance companies were already dropping people like crazy. I guarantee there’s a lot of people that didn’t have insurance on their homes. Then there’s those that were under insured or just won’t be able to afford to rebuild. Plus labor and construction prices are already through the roof and super busy. Totally FUBAR is how I would describe it.

There’s still about 1/4 of vacant lots up on the hills of Ventura from the thomas fire 5 years ago. Lots of people moved because they couldn’t afford to rebuild.

All I know is we plan to put our house up for sale this year and move to AZ, I hope there is a market to sell the damn place.
Based on current events, I am thinking about doing the same.
My daughter will be crushed moving before high school, but wife and I started talking about it.
Main reason, we see insurance going up, taxes going up and quality of government funded programs (education, etc) going down. Those areas impacted will take decades to recover

If its any help, my teenage daughter, Sophmore, was upset when we moved last year. She got over it. She is enrolled in ASU Hybrid for Highschool, Straight A's , and is earning College Credits! We can take vacation whenever we want, she works at her pace.

Dont wait, get the ball rolling!

Sell, make your profit, then rent a place til she finishes HS.
No perfect answers but this at least relieves you of the home ownership expenses.

I took a "drive" through Paradise CA on google street view.....it's interesting. A handful of new/rebuilt houses....but a lot of vacant lots with RVs on 'em.

I know this is an affluent area we're dealing with now, but I also know that many are not in a position to pay cash to rebuild, and without insurance...which they won't be able to get, they can't get financing. It's gonna be in a mess in the Palisades/Malibu area. Not sure anyone would want to live there after this....driving past a bunch of burned our ruins for the next 5-10 years to get home if your place is still standing. Rebuilding comes with it's own headaches.

This is a rather significant event that will change the course of things.

Hopefully, people are starting to see the light, but I am curious if this is just lip service or if once the dust settles, they do resign or like everything else will it just get swept under the rug for a few more years of terrible leadership for this state.

Starting the process.
Huge issue in moving, my daughter is ranked top 20 for her position in volleyball in SD county for her age group (13yo). While that translates to other areas, it also causes concerns. She is at a top 5 club in CA and top 10 nationally and the coach for the 14yo team at the top club in CA and top 3 nationally has already asked if she is going to try out with them for next season. We are 2 tournaments into this season. Plus she has had small colleges already look at her.

Have you looked at rent in Carlsbad :)
If we sell, we are done with CA. Will come to vacation, but we are out!

My biggest single family rental is in Calavera Hills, so yes I have.😉😊
Like I said, no perfect answer....but someone did mention how their sophomore was resilient after they moved. Kids adapt.

An incredible number of Internet Bloggers, Influencers and Social Media whores will seize on the personal tragedy and loss of thousands, for financial gain and to promote themselves as "Experts" in order to achieve Internet Stardom.
Essentially, the same thing the other "Mass" Media Whores are doing.
Of course the people who's lives will be changed forever won't be the one's paying any attention to their Bullshit as they'll be a bit preoccupied putting their lives back together for the next four or five years.
The one really good thing, like we experienced, once you rebuild you feel pretty damned safe for a few years, since there's nothing much left to burn up on them hills.
Unfortunately, that damned Mommy Nature has a way of putting it all pretty much back to how it was and it doesn't take long either.

Jillian Michaels, fitness trainer, was on Hannity last night. She lost a home in the PP area about 5 years ago. She said it took a year just to get her first permit. Her pool was intact, but full of trash and dead animals. She was not even allowed to drain that pool. It got so ridiculous she said F’ it and sold. She’s interesting. Another ex lib, who is now speaking up. I find her kind of hot. But, I recall from her previous fitness show, she’s a gay/lesbian. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. . . . She’s still attractive.

There are great volleyball clubs in Az, and the high schools have great programs as well, she will get all the attention she deserves. Keep in mind a lot of girls that are all in at 13 start to lose interest at 17.

Just as a gauge . . . a neighbor works at a Disney Hotel in Anaheim . . . talked to him this morning . . . said they are booked solid w/ evacuee's
Rooms where he works are $700/ night & up.
So min. $21K / month to stay there.
I know . . . chump change to many folks.

Yep.
And based on the coaches we have talked to, almost all of them saw their dream of playing in college go away at that age.

Very difficult to make the 1 or 2 team at any club walking blind into tryouts. For the areas we are looking at, I will be reaching out to the higher ranked clubs and meeting some coaches at the National events my daughter plays at. Also having friends who have kids plating at those clubs make introductions.

My Buddy that is finishing up that 800$ a sq ft remodel in Santa Monica. The client was paying 17k a month rent for a house close by during. Remodel took 3 years.

He said Santa Monica is a nightmare to deal with. They give you like 5 pages of possible fines for things like blocking Sidewalk and trash. He said it took 2-4 weeks to get a inspector out once you scheduled it. The owner moved in before final and the fine was $500 a day.

I have not worked in Santa Monica for 20 years. Last one was on 3rd st promenade for a hair salon. And it was a pain in the ass then. Can't even imagine now.

No doubt there are some politics involved, but talent still rises to the top and good fair coaching can help keep them motivated for sure. My daugher's 13-1 team came in 3rd place in the Reno tournament and I think only 1 of them is still playing, they are seniors now. It was a ton of fun while it lasted for sure and some great friends made for her and I.

With the Olympics and World Cup coming, and the materials/labor needed, I think we should withdraw. I know we have more stadiums then most of the countries that have hosted, but those events usually involve a massive amount of debt correct? I would prefer LA focuses on rebuilding then hosting these events…

Curious, how does this work in todays economy? Not just Disney hotel but any hotel for that matter. People are strapped, have no savings, and their credit cards are maxed, what does one do when they have no place to stay in this circumstance?

Bingo.

It's gonna be completely fucked.

Most people aren't even going to be able to afford to rebuild even if they DID still have insurance coverage, because the current engineering and red tape compliance puts the costs of the build several times the normal per sq ft price.... Not to mention how long the wait time is gonna be for permit approval, inspections etc etc etc.

The state of California has failed as a whole. The politicians have let their citizens down.

It started with Willie Brown pulling funding for clearing the under brush and dead fall. The liberals are all about preservation, and let's not cut down that dead tree that bark beetles killed. I grew up on a mountain top here in Vegas. The forestry service would knock on our door and tell me and my dad where they cute down dead trees. We would take four wheelers and a trailers and collect the dead fall to use in the wood burning stove as heat. This tells me that other states are actually managing their forests. In fact the proof is always there, during fire season you could see all of California's surrounding boarders to other states. Look at the apps or websites, only California is on fire and the bordering states are not.

Then there's the utility companies, the same utility companies have always asked for easements that have been denied. If the easements were cleared as requested there wouldn't be trees hitting power lines, and those companies wouldn't be getting blamed.

I have more to say, but I'm not a word smith

I’m reassessing my ability to fend off a wall of fire, and what my neighbors think of my 40-50’ pines…. I keep them thinned out, but not everyone are doing the same in our area.

The average home price up there is $4.6mm…. I’ve seen several people online just heading to their other house or renting a beach house. I think the vast majority will be fine financially.

Macro- Insurance companies leave or raise prices. I’m hoping they won’t insure new houses that aren’t built to withstand stuff like this.

I'm gonna move up there, take lots of down payments and deposits, never stick a shovel in the ground and then flee to Panama.

It's gonna be chaos up there for years. There isn't the capacity for this much more work from the existing contractors.

The rich folks will be fine, but there's probably quite a few that bought a while ago and could not afford to buy there now. I think 80% of the people in my neighborhood couldn't afford to buy in again at today's prices.

You're seeing what the algorithms let you see. It gives the impression that the majority of people agree with you. It's not necessarily the case. I'll give you an example. I just clicked on Senator Liz Warren's X page. She posted 1 hour ago about Pete Hegseth. 100% of the first 20 comments called her Pocahantas, or were about her claiming to be Native, or calling her a moron. Do you really think that 100% of the people who follow her hate her? Not one positive supporter? Not one??? I'm not buying it. I'm seeing what X thinks I want to see, so that I keep coming back. IG and FB are no different.

I don't think any of the fire victims will end up on the street

I was at a motel last night. Tracking someone. The motel was full. Along with every other one in that area. The detective I have been talking with says they are subsidized by LA city. Mostly criminals and addicts that have been released from prison with no where to go. I didn't ask the manager how much they get per room. Ended up talking to him for 30 minutes. They won't release names or acknowledge if a criminal is staying there as it violates there rights. He did tell me the police are there all the time. And he would gladly help them for my situation.

There is another new building they just built not far from it. That houses the same. Small 1 bedroom units. But with state subsidizing it. They pay $80 a month.

With these types of handouts why would these criminals and drug addicts ever get a job? They make it to easy for them.

In another thread I mentioned the 2k units being built. Half of them are low income subsidized. One of them the builder is funding himself. The inspector wss telling me he has to build a certain amount of low income to get his other developments approved. The state requires each city to build them. So in return for him building them they allow him to develop other properties with what he wants with quick approval. Nothing like adding low income houses to a nice area.

If you want to stock pile a warehouse full.
I would buy up all the residential fire sprinkler supplies.

The company I used a while back bought it by the semi load. Competition can't compete buying from the supply house.

It will never be the same. Just like how the city of Beverly Hills was demanding 1000's of low income housing with no real estate. Now there is a ton of real estate that they will demand high density, low income housing before they issue all the permits. Its going to be a shit show.

I wonder about all those ocean front homes along PCH that are gone. Will the Coastal Commission be able to drag those approvals out or not approve them at all? I see that as a taking of the owner's value....maybe they could drag out one owner's permission for ages, but with 200 owners....there would be a class action lawsuit.

It is going to be interesting to follow along with the progress.

My brothers are in the flooring business. Hurricane Ian was a little over 2 years ago. They still can't keep up with the demand. Material and Labor are the problem. Now with the hurricanes this past fall it will get worse. These fires will just add to the shortage.

All I know is we plan to put our house up for sale this year and move to AZ, I hope there is a market to sell the damn place.
We bought a house one year ago & the only thing that held us up past the closing date was securing fire insurance, which ended up being though the CA FAIR Plan. Then the rest of the house property insurance went through All State. It is 2 different insurance plans to get what was used to be an inexpensive $800 or so per year. Now it's like $5k and I could see doubling that real soon.
