Plug in your ear buds and listen to this young woman sing.

She has only been singing for a couple of years. Her voice...well it gave me goose bumps. Snoop around on you tube and you can find several covers...this one...my gawd she gave me goose bumps...
Enjoy.

From what I have been able to find the first time she actually ever sang before a live audience was in April of this year.
She works with the producer above...read his notes in the video...and she has her own YT channel as well...lots ot explore.
She truly has a gift.

Of course I remember Karen she was one of my sisters best friends all through high school. This girl does an incredible job of imitating Karen and the orchestra is right on point. Impressive but at the same time kind of eerie.

Fess up, how many of you used that one as your wedding song? lol lol

I remember the song was heavily used in a bank commercial.

All that aside, the girl does an outstanding job 👍

I often ponder how some of the classic voices would hold up in the talent shows like The Voice, or America's Got Talent.

Voices like Carpenter, KD Lang, Melissa Etheridge, Rita Coolidge, Linda Ronstadt etc

Would they make it thru? Or be dismissed as "average" given the talent pool they are tapping? I would guess the latter, especially since countless gems like this girl can be found on YT.

What do you guys think?

I'm pretty sure Karen Carpenter would stack up pretty well, but I agree there are many great singers and musicians that have incredible talent but never make it big. Song writing plus talent is what pays the bills, and that is much more rare than a great voice.

Superstar and We've only just begun have been on my playlists forever, funny how people bust my balls when they come on but I almost always catch them singing along at some point.

Not to be negative. But I’d like to hear the talent pool of today without the mixing /voice enhancements they use.
Again. Not saying they aren’t really good.

My mom used to drive us by their house. Then we’d ride our backs by to see/ hope they were outside.
Rode by their apartments every time we headed to the stonewood mall. 👍

Was gonna say they lived in Downey in a pretty simple looking house, But I heard there was a recording studio in it.

I knew both Karen and Richard ( Richard was a bit of a car guy, had a nice Cuda).

The site of their apartment buildings used to be the old Downey Community hospital. That’s where I was born.

The house was pretty upscale middle class and yes they had a small recording studio there. Did you know that apart from having an outstanding voice Karen was also an awesome drummer.

I knew Karen and Richard. Richard was class of 64’ at Downey High School. I was class of 65’ and Karen was class of 67’. I also knew members of their band. Before Karen began singing, they played as a jazz trio at some of our school assemblies. Extremely talented and good people. Believe Richard lives now in Westlake CA, near Thousand Oaks. He does a lot for charities. When they first moved to Downey in 1963, they lived in south Downey. Later, they moved to Newville Ave in north Downey, not far from where I lived. I recall they purchased the house next door and combined them into one. This is where their parents lived and where Karen was found on the floor by her mother. Believe she was DOA at Downey Hospital. Recording studio in the Newville house, ?? I know another Downey High classmate, and a friend of Richard and Karen, had one of the first multi track recorders around. Richard began experimenting with “stacking”/over dubbing their vocal harmonies on that recorder.

Another very good ‘cover’ of Karen’s outstanding voice is performed on IG by Harriet Sings. An attractive British girl, who does an excellent job on many of the Carpenter’s tunes. She has an amazing low register, very similar to Karen’s.

Here’s a sample of Harriet Sings. Believe her real name is Harriet Robert’s. Good looking girl, I find her very easy on the eyes and she’s 6’ tall. The thing I find amazing about Harriet, this is her voice, this is how she sounds and sings. She has just been blessed with a voice very similar to Karen’s. BTW - Many feel Karen’s voice was “discovered’ by the choir director at the Downey Methodist church, Vance Hayes.

Karen would be the first to say she was a bit of a tomboy. But, when she was healthy, she was truly attractive.

Before there was The Carpenters, there was Spectrum. Which included Karen, Richard some others from Downey High. Gary Sims, seen in this video, and I played in a band together in 8th grade, Jr High. Gary played guitar and sang backup vocal with the Carpenters for a number of years. Tragically, he was also a pallbearer at her funeral.

My favourite song of Karen's. Mr Postman, you have to have the volume up to enjpy. this song. Extremely smooth musically and a great voice behind it. I really miss the great saxophone players in today's music.

The” new” Downey community was/is on Brookshire. The old Downey community was a converted 5 bedroom house right where Close To You ( which is the name of one of the Carpenters apartments) is today.

I guess when I said “Recording studio “ that might have been a pretty generous term. More like a music room/ rehearsal studio. Much better equipped than your typical garage band. Probably suitable for cutting a demo tape.

Damn. You are old. Paraphrasing another member. 🤣😜
I never knew that. When I had all my emergency visits ( from what I remember ) was either Galliton (sp) or the DCH.
61 here.
