I know they are.
Kids are on ski team. It's a huge $ and time commitment for them and the wife and I.
Minimum 2 days a week since the end of November. One on mountain practice day a week. Which they get out of school for and one race day every other week or so. Races every week the last 3 weeks. Got to miss 3 days of school for mid week races. Lucky pricks.

Our county is on a 4 day school week program. So every Friday they can catch a bus to their local mountain if they don't have a race that day at another resort.

Wife is an assistant coach. Goes to every practice. Rides the bus with the kiddos on practice days. We drive them all over the state for races. No busses for races. We are super committed.
Last race and practice of the season were last week. Wife wakes uo this morning at 5 and says she wants to go ride. 7" of fresh over night and a blue bird day. I get the kids up and they start throwing a fit. They don't want to go. I lost my chit. Spoiled pricks. Wife doesn't really get to do many runs during practices and race days and she want to get some runs in today.

I didn't want to be a dick about it. But it really pissed me off. I also don't want to burn them out.
13 year old twins. 14 next month.

Definitely on thin ice with burning them out but they also do need to understand that mom doesn't get the opportunity to ski when they are skiing so days like today are for mom and showing their appreciation for what she does and sacrifices for them during race season. Sounds like they are good kids but kids (teens) nonetheless, got 2 of them myself, they will be 17 and 13 in a couple months.

Teens are a balance. My boys were a PIA about family time. They grow out of it.

We are currently out in the desert and my daughter pulled that card yesterday when it was sunset ride time with mom. She did 2 other rides yesterday with me. She did not want to drive her SXS around with mom.

I ended up flipping the seats and mom drove and I rode the quad. But before I left I disabled the starlink from my daughtets devices - she was pissed it was turned off while we were gone. Told her that was life, then packed up the starlink (was only needed so my wife could world yesterday).

Exactly what I told them. Plus some extra.
They are good kids. Most days...

They did go. They just didn't want to.
I'm sure they are beat.
They had 3 events they raced on Thursday (7hrs on Copper Mountain mountain) and took the bus up
to Loveland ski area with their buddies yesterday.

They knew it was going to be a device free day if they didn't go.

That’s a shit load of skiing.

I had buddies who played competitive golf who didn’t wanna play with their dads for the same reason.

What’s “fun” for mom and dad is a competitive sport for them.
I can see that.
It might have been a little different story this morning if they were going with their buddies. Mom's not as fast/crazy as them. She's been riding 27 years and doesn't hold them back but she doesn't push them like their buddies or I do.

Burnout is very real, but it's also a very seasonal sport. If they are getting fried already, it could get pretty ugly. As a kid, high school years were 6hrs swimming laps Monday through Friday, 4 on Saturday. All year long. We hoped for events, they were "easier". This was before and after school. Very rare to miss any school.

Going to the beach, the river or just hanging out at a friend's pool, was awesome. We were still in the water, still swimming, but goofing off. You're in a different world though. I've only skied twice...that shit hurt, and it's expensive.

I was on the Mammoth Mtn race team for about 3 years when I was that age.

You know how you make a kid hate doing something that everyone else finds fun? MAKE them do it all the time.

We trained every day except Sunday...left school at noon and headed up to the mtn, trained from 1:00-4:30 (or 4:00...can't remember). While I had a blast doing it, I didn't really enjoy free skiing after a year or 2. I stopped spending the winters there when I started high school and I haven't been back on skis since then. No real desire to.

Your program is only one day a week though...so maybe your kids are just assholes lol.

First of all congrats to you and the kids for investing in that experience for them. It will be fondly remembered for your whole lives. I know a lot of kids that went through the Vail program and they have turned into great people / adults.

Do you think your kids woke up and said 7" of fresh + bluebird day + Presidents weekend = shit show? Everyone on the front range will be there, haha

Yes, they are spoiled, they get to ski weekdays.........

I get pissed at my kids everyday for being spoiled little brats! And everyday I realize it’s my fault that they’re spoiled little brats! Haha.

My only saving grace is that our kids do well in school, are respectful to teachers and other adults, and that they generally behave well in public (the 2 and 4 years still have their moments).

Home is their outlet for emotional release, so sometimes we have to just let it happen. I think kids “hold it together” in school, at friends houses, on sports teams, etc. Home is their safe place to let all that pent up stuff out. It just sucks when it’s let out when we as parents aren’t ready to deal with it.

This is only their second year on ski team. It was their idea to do. Who wouldn’t want to get out of school to ski.
It gets alot more serious the next 4 years.
They really just want to ski with their buddies.

Your kids are lucky to have a cool Dad like you, Kyle.. Hope to see you soon on the Colorado ride.

I was just reading all this and thinking

Load up you and your wife’s gear. Point at that giant wood pile and tell them to start splitting.
Yeah. I still can't ride. Just got the stitches out of my hand a week ago.
I did suggest she just go alone and I' ride their asses around the house all day. I also offered to sit in the bar while she rode. She could drive me home.
She wasn't having it.

Just got a text thanking me for motivating the kids.

I started playing Sunday league. My older boy is playing travel. So little league practice Mon, travel tues, wed, Thurs, and little league Friday. Right now we both love it but he’s only 10, so we’ll have to see where it goes. It’s fun and competitive for both of us. I still enjoy umpiring as well and do quite a bit of that.

Thanks Dan! Momma says I can only go if Dad or Sam goes, haha. Trying to force those guys to have a good time is like pulling teeth! Ha.

Glad she enjoyed it, did the kids enjoy their day with mom and no pressure competition between the 2 of them. There is a difference between pressure and no pressure competition, both are fun but they do have their place.

Killer conditions.
Got to show mom some stuff they learned. They both said they were glad they went.
The wife did go down hard. Smacked her head. Got the ski patrol toboggan ride down the mountain. I had to book it up there to drive them home. She's all good today. Just a headache.

Love it. That’s outstanding parenting IMO.
