Time for some motorsports! 52 annual I-500 snowmobile race this weekend. Flying from Denver to MI tomorrow and looking forward to some good old fashioned 1 mile ice oval snowmobile racing, not that snow cross crap. Will be my first time for this race. Cigars, beer, bourbon and telling lies with a group of mid-western knuckleheads. Should be a hoot.

A good friend helps with the course. Look up a guy named Mark Juday. Good guy, he will tell you where the fun is. I have some great pics of a friend from town that won the race twice back in the eighties with the #5 Yamaha sled. Spent a lot of time in that town. Have fun.

Thanks for the info, I’ll ask around for Mark. I’m going with a buddy who has a cabin near Sault Ste. Marie. He’s been to the race a few times. I don’t think we will be riding this weekend, he says it’s amateur hour on the trails with all of the race visitors.

Horrible picture of the old Yamaha. It was pretty funny, a couple of rednecks winning races against factory teams. I store my Center Console at his barn. I asked him this fall if he still had the sled. He sold it a few years ago. It is the real deal, local racer from Petoskey was killed in the race several years ago. I remember being hung over standing watching that race smelling the race fuel. My wife is a NASCAR nut, but has no desire to go watch a snowmobile race.

Where are you flying into? Looks to be decent weather. It is unreal how rough the track gets for a flat track Oval.

It is such grass roots racing, home town teams, and nostalgia. Truly a unique experience. Have a great time!

That is so awesome, thanks for the memories. Looks like your buddy applied his race number with pieces of green duct tape. Saved the money for motor mods no doubt! I used to ride a Scorpian, 440, that I modded the shit outta.

Thanks, looking forward to it. Flying into Detroit. High school buddies picking me up and first stop Frankenmuth for family style Chicken, draft beer, cigars and then to the UP.

Not a lot of natural snow fall this year so hopefully they scooped in enough to not be running on snirt by the end of the race. I see ol' Troy Dewald is still hanging in there at 50 years old. The weather is going to be decent, last year was f-ing brutal for the race.

If anyone can post pics after the fact, I'd appreciate it. This sounds like a fun deal...pros and good'ol boys. Tradition behind it too.
Cigars and bourbon optional, but racing on snow and ice sounds cool. I grew up where there wasn't much snow, so it looks interesting;)

Damn, it's been many years when it first began. Had friends that built some high powered sleds and raced for years.....Forgot about it 'till I saw this post.

Anyone that attends, don't forget your bottle of Schnaps to keep a fight going against the cold:D

News was talking about speeds during testing today. Wow, 114 will make for a good race. Not sure if the girl had her info correct.

My friend Travis Faust is on the Faust Racing Team qualified 3rd.

I’ve been watching the Snocross on Livestream, they’re in Dubuque this weekend.
Watch Round 9 Theisen's Snocross National by International Series of Champions on livestream.com

It’s ended for tonight but they’re broadcasting starting at 11 AM CST tomorrow.
I’m going to try to watch both!

Is Troy DeWald originally from Madison WI? When I worked for PSI I used to port Yamahas and deliver them to the East Side of Madison, right next to the huge bread bakery.

Dewald is from Au Gres Michigan. A local guy to me is on his team, Todd Krikke. I worked with a couple of Todd's friends yesterday. Todd was telling them how everything is computer read now, track slip, temp, clutch slip. He chuckled and said that when he first started it was all measured by sound, feel, and the seat of your pants, lol.

Used to work in Au Gres and still do mobile service calls there. The owner of the Marina I worked for is friends with Todd. He seems to have that program pretty well together. As with anything data logging is where it's at.

I was testing my memory. Hawkins Roofing won with the Yamaha in 77. They won with a Ski-Do in 80. Funny thing is, he owns a sailboat now. But races every Tuesday night during the summer. Me and Heidi tow the boat back to the dock when they run out of wind. It is good PR. I have several customers that race.

How about Flannery? He has been building motors for a long time, top notch Polaris guy who may still race in the mid week exhibitions. I think I heard one time he built a sled to win the pole and raced about fifty laps just to prove he still could.

Right by where the Beach Bums stadium is, correct?
If you are going south from TC, just as you would turn right on 31 towards Honor, the track was on the left at that corner. Yes, In the Beach Bum area.

Corey Davidson? I haven’t heard that name I quite a few years. Same with bustin Justin Tate. Justin was a teammate with a friend of mine in snow cross.

Great kids. Joe has spent a lot of time traveling all over to the snow cross racing. He lost his wife in a car accident about 10 years ago.

334 laps with 25 of 31 sleds left on the dirt track. That is pretty incredible.

I had it running and was listening until about lap 336. Who ended up winning? I’m not finding results with the Google machine

I can’t believe their tracks are not falling off without any snow to cool them.
