So for Christmas of 2020 I decided to buy a members 25 Daytona with a 516 side mount blower , xr drive, and original interior. 2020 was a completely awful year for my wife and I so we decided to reward ourselves with something new surviving the shit storm that 2020 was.

This was our first foray into “fast boats” as my current boat at the time was a renegade 23 with a 496.

The Daytona was a blast and great to learn how to drive a cat etc as well as how to handle speeds more than 65-70 mph.

But fuck me, I wish go fast boating came with a disclaimer as to how much it costs to go fast and also keep boats in going fast conditions. It would also have been helpful to know how boats have a knack for becoming cans of worms when the upgrade process begins.

So here is my tale of stupidity, or a “Daytona restoration” thread if you prefer.

here is the boat as it sat when we brought it home. Mind you we drove from San Diego to Oregon to pick this sled up.

The boat ran great for two seasons after we got it. However it started to lose power and couldn’t get over the hop it had which meant it was way down on hp and mph.

So off to the mechanic in havasu for a health check and we found that the exhaust valve system was in need of repair as too much heat had caused some issues.

This was not a surprise as the motor had world product aftermarket iron heads and with the side mount 2.3l whipple spinning at 16k rpm to make boost, it created more heat than cool air.

Can of worms 1 time. We could hone and fix the heads and valves and put it all back together but would most likely have the same problem in a couple of years. We could ditch the blower all together but that wouldn’t be much fun.

Or we could put aluminum heads, new valves and train, and a new gen 5 whipple to make 6 pounds of boost with option for more.

So being a stupid man, aluminum heads and new blower time!

Go-fast cars suck money...Go-fast boats seem like an exponential increase over cars. I'm pretty decent with motors...but I've never done motors that were meant to run full load for extended periods like a boat. I understand why the maintenance schedule on big motors is harsh, they get flogged every time they run, and not like stop light to stoplight either.

Beautiful boat though! As my friends old street racer dad used to say:
"Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?"

My first so called high performance boat was a 77 Tahiti Bubbledeck with a 70 LS-6 GM crate motor bought from parents friend with 77 hours on it.
I would buy head gaskets 2 and 3 sets at a time, had no problem popping heads on a school night just to look around. My friends would say your always fixing that, I would correct them, it's staying ahead of fixing it.
I would tell them to go drive your vehicle on the freeway for 4 hours in 2nd gear.

So the blower and motor work was done beginning of 2023 season and the boat runs like a raped ape.

Easy 800 plus hp and it blows past the single step Daytona hop like it’s not even there.

So happy with the performance I smile ear to ear.

But we bring the boat in for a 20 and 40 hour service and what do we find? Why the xr drive is letting loose some metal shavings.

Too much hp for the xr drive which is rated for 600 hp.

So can of worms number 2. Do we rebuild the xr? Max machine? Or imco Scx?

Well being a stupid man, let’s bolt and Scx drive on there so we don’t have this issue any more.

While we are at it, full hydraulic to the helm sounds like a great idea.

The motor needs to be pulled to do the Scx, swap and since the motor is out, we never did the cam when we installed the blower so now might as well be a good time to sort that out.

Should be 950-1000hp when done if the math is correct.

The xr housing got painted too to match the Scx bc why not at this point right?

With the new drive you’re getting, could you punch it standing still? I don’t know much about the v8 I/o platform.

Congrats on the upgrades. Gonna be even more badass when it’s done.
I’m surprised my wife not only agreed to buying our current boat but didn’t leave me because of it yet. I told her it’s only a little bigger and a little more gas each weekend. 😬. She doesn’t ever complain when cruising down the lake. I take a few shots paying for the annual maintenance and rebuilds though.

Badass boat man! I wanted a m26 with a big block but after talking to couple friends. I will go through drives with the way I drive.

I’ve gotten to the point with boats that I realized you actually need two boats. That way you dont have to sit on the dock all summer with a dead boat in your garage, and you can still go boating. I’m thinking maybe three boats…

So the motor, drive, and hydraulic steering is taken care of.

But the wife was looking at the interior of the boat and the checkered pattern on the original interior wasn’t doing it for her.

As I got my boat fix taken care of via horse power, I decided to keep the missus happy and discuss a new interior.

We went by Renee’s place at riverside boat Upholstery and chatted with him about what we think would be a good direction.

Since I’m not too bright, we bit the bullet and decided to go with a brand new interior from the carpet up.

Picked her up this afternoon. Stoked how it came out.

The isotta wheel, livrosi guages, and new shifter are getting installed when the drive goes back on next week.

Glad you have a good sense of humor. Honestly, most of us have been down this road. I sincerely hope you get her and your Wife back on the water ASAP.

We had a 25 Daytona that we put a NA 598" that was 735hp & 748 ft/lb & did a new SCX upper with new -2" SC lower. I absolutely FLOGGED it for several dozen hours before we did 1000 miles up the Ohio River. I literally tried to kill it before our trip.
Best of luck with badass 25

We will be back on water for desert storm.

The motor went down in 2022. We had a great 23 but the drive started letting loose.

Three weeks we are dialed.

I’m sure you could but I would not want to. Spinning 34 so they take a while to plane out

So you got two seasons
if you consider that stupid i would hate to see what you call me,
Now go with twin blower motors and never have a single trip without something going wrong and then blow both motors View attachment 1352211
I'll see you that and raise you 500HP...per side.
IMG_4702.jpeg

A couple of seasons so far and nothing major yet. Just a few small things.

Gary at GT told me, "If you want to run it like a race boat, expect to maintain it like one. Run it like normal and you'll be fine for quite some time.

He's been right so far.
