No fun pics out on the course but yesterday I got fitted for new irons at Golftec. Ending up ordering the Taylormade P790's with Project X shafts extended 1/2'' with midsize grips along with some new MG3 wedges with the same shafts/grips. With a 7 iron I gained 20 yards on average with the P790. I've been playing with a set of free Taylormade Rocketballz cavity back irons and told myself until I took some lessons and really improved then I would get a new set. Looking forward to having them in the bag.

Driver fitting is next week. Not a fan of the Taylormade drivers so going to try them all and go from there.

Congrats!! You are going to love the 790’s they are such a rewarding iron to play with. I’ve had mine for about 4 years now and highly recommend them to anyone that isn’t a beginner.

Did you try the Mizunos? The liquid metals were crazy of the face. I was averaging close to 180 with a dam 7 iron.

I did my fitting last week and lucky for me I fit into standard stuff so it's easy for me. I didn't notice much difference from my Callaway x2 set but mine are stiff and only 85 gram I felt way better strong 115 gram and as mentioned picked up some yardage but I'm not super concerned with distance, just feel and workability. I will probably pick up another set this year that are closer to player irons with the heavier weight.

First off, that is impressive with a 7 iron. I got a few in the 170 range when on full kill but I'm not comfortable swinging that hard which my coach thinks is partially due to the soft shafts I have in my current clubs (not sure I believe that but who knows). Since I have been getting better, I do know that I have been slowing my irons down because they get inconsistent yet with a consistent feeling swing. Ball striking keeps getting better but it is going to be a learning curve to be able to really attack consistently.

I did try the Mizunos but for some reason just did not hit them as well and they didn't feel as balanced. Second to the 790s were the Cobras. I was really impressed with the Cobras to be honest but the 790's felt like home immediately so I picked them over the Cobras.

Your launch and decent angle are great man. I'm struggling there. Always have. I hit high, so I've been working on compression and getting there but I even hit a few straight player irons in my fitting and still was in the yellow areas.

It really comes down to your feel.and comfort. I'm a huge ping driver fan so i was excited to hit the irons, they felt horrible.

I did not try the TaylorMade admittedly, but I have a good amount of lessons with my coach so I let him steer the shop in what I tried.

I tore my swing down a bit with the lessons, I've always had a decent swing speed but brought it down some working on things and now it's back to around what it was but with was seems like less effort. Once I dial in a bit more compression and hand out in front of at impact I will be interested to see distance.

Speaking of hitting thin, with my current irons, man it stings, but I hitting a thin shot with higher grain and it was so much better. That's reason enough to change lol.

Mizuno 7 iron is 29 degrees of loft. The 790 is 30.5. They keep cheating distance by slowly decreasing loft.

That makes perfect sense. That's why I I'm not super hung up on distances, if I can't reach with a 7 iron I'll use a 6 lol.

It's all about feel and workability for me.

Loft is just one component weight placement is another. So 1* difference depending on how much weight is below the sweet spot could mean nothing. Shaft flex and stiffness plays another big part along with where the flex is built into the shaft.

I’ve got a 7* driver that flys way higher than my old 10* driver.

Started little man this year he's playing his first 9 next week for his 4th birthday. He hits the ball so damn good we usually get a crowd on the range. Even helped me cut down and regrip his club's

I really need to put more time in with my daughter, she loves it, but not very natural. And my almost 2 year old sons swing is better than mine lol. There is a program called 1st tee that I want to get them into. Check it out.

It’s the old Callaway/Cobra formula for irons. They’d do the opposite on drivers. 9 degree driver was 10+. Made everyone feel like they could hit lower loft stuff back when that was cool.

Thanks, but it was probably just luck in the recorded shots, ha! Your launch and decent angles look to be really consistent which is a huge help.

Feel and comfort for sure is what matters. My buddy has the Ping driver and I hit it a few times a round because I like it so much, may go down that path. I didn't event try the Ping irons after I tried them at Roger Dunn one day and absolutely hated them. Too bad because I love a matching bag.

Funny you mention thinning shots. I thinned a few when screwing around with the 790s and it wasn't bad at all. My current clubs hurt like hell when thinning them.

Now I don't feel as bad, thanks dude.

Off subject, does your family run the Stoker as well? An older (than us) couple pulled up near us at Wally's a few weeks back and looked to be your boat.

They do not. My pops has a 21’ TPR deck boat that he’ll take out but I’m the only one that ever runs my Stoker. My buddy as well as my brother in law were both out there and they each have very similar colored blue stokers so it might have been one of them. I haven’t stopped at Wally’s yet this summer, it’s too close to my house and I love to burn gas.

When’s your next trip? We’ll have to meet up for a beer or 2!

How the hell am I supposed to know which blue stoker to hit my driver off their upholstery? lol.

I'll be out next Fri-Sun. Thereafter its usually every other weekend depending on work.

Lol.

Yeah I'm definitely consistent on my trajectory. It's always too high no matter what lol. I definitely sweep the ball more than I should but happen getting a lot better about compression but still a lot of work to be done.

That was the only reason I tried the pains was because I love the driver so much. I'm on my second one. The irons felt horrible.

I play since I was a kid, but I've never really been a student of the game, until recently. We were really started trying to improve. When I got my current iron set, all I really knew is that I had a pretty quick swing and needed steel shafts and I didn't even know the difference in weights. After hitting some heavier irons they felt way smoother.

Right now if I thin one it feels like I'm taking a inside fastball to the hands lol.

Lol I know you're joking but it is crazy to me how people get hung on "what club are you hitting" and how far people hit. All clubs are different my PW could be your 8 iron, who cares if we both reach the green? Or a long drive both we both get there in regulation lol. Same shit.

That being said, I do like hitting bombs haha.

I'm with you on this. I have about 6-7 guys I golf with regularly and a few of them are constantly asking me what I'm hitting on par 3's or approach shots when we are close. Almost always it is a club or two up from what they intend to hit which is damn near tour length striping their iron of choice. Sometimes they get there and its cool to watch but I've always just worried about what I think I can do to be most successful in ending up with the best place to score.

Sure, I hope to be able to be the guy saying 180 is a perfect full 7 iron but I know that isn't the case right now and I'm fine with that. That's why my bag is full of different clubs that go different distances. If it takes a driver, then I'm pulling that out. If it takes a wedge, then I'm probably pulling an 8 iron or putter out.

100%. I do have a buddy that has a very similar swing tempo and distance so we will bounce ideas off each other but even when paired with strangers that have no idea what length I hit or my plan of attack on a given hole. Maybe I am trying to lay up away from something or hit a stinger lol.

My instructor and I were talking about this, he said he got paired up once with a this arrogant guy that was obsessed with what club and distance, like oh you hit a 8? That means I should hit a 9 because I am longer. so after the 1st par three he just started messing with him, like I hit a 9 iron on that shot so the guy would pull a PW and dunk in the water lol.

Haha! I've been paired with a few of these types. One day at my local course I got paired with a father and his two sons. The father was the equivalent of a moto dad (best way I can describe it) making his kids play clubs that they had no business playing. I started the round off solid and was hitting the ball really well. He started asking me what clubs I was hitting and started making his kids club down from there insisting that they have much faster swing speeds than I do. They ended in the water two holes in a row due to clubbing down. It was a twilight tee time and I was walking so I ended up bailing and went back and re-played a few holes since there was no one behind us.

I have the new G430, it’s awesome.
Ended up getting fitted for a new driver this week.

Tried the new Callaway Paradym and honestly didn't care for it. Don't get me wrong it was nice but didn't wow in numbers or feel for me.

Cobra driver was surprisingly good and looked great behind the ball. Didn't care for the cheap looking stickers on the bottom of it (yeah that's important apparently in my deranged mind).

TaylorMade Stealth.... wish I could like it since I got TM irons but its ugly from all angles and I don't like the sound.

Ping G430 Max, well hello! That escalated into a G430 3 wood and 5 wood as well. You cost me some dough here.

Did the same thing last week at Roger Dunn Monrovia. Hit a bunch of balls with pretty much every driver. Ping was my favorite. I just gotta find a deal. 😬

My coach told me it was the most forgiving driver on the market and after hitting some bad shots during the fitting I tended to agree with him. I paid normal retail prices for all of them but now that I have an entire new bag on order (sans putter since I actually like that club) I figured may as well do it all now and be done. I've waited 5 years to pull the trigger on new clubs and relative to other hobbies (such as boats haha!) it isn't that bad.

That being said, watch FB Marketplace, I have seen 430's pop up regularly here in SoCal, just make sure the loft and shaft are what you are looking for.

Sorry bout it 👍🏻
I played Havasu west on Monday before the heat with it, becoming my favorite club.

Picked up a Callaway Epic Max driver a few weeks ago and love it. I decided it was time to replace my old X22's and went with the new Callaway Mavrik standard set. They arrived a few days ago. Recovering from a sprained ankle for a few more days, but Geez, I am itching to try them out!

The itch is real. Unfortunately, got the call today that TaylorMade said my shafts are on backorder (two out of the set ETA in September). Ended up swapping them all out from Project X shafts to Modus to get them on their way. Ping woods are a few weeks out as well so back to the waiting game.

I'm trying out the sxrixon zx7s irons right now. My coach let me barrow his set to see how I like them. It's my 1st time playing player irons. They are still pretty forgiving but you know when you compress it and they feel amazing, you also know when you don't lol. I've only had 2 range sessions so will see this weekend. Playing on rancho mirage.

It also has zx5 driver , 3 wood and 5 wood. not sold on the driver vs my ping but the fairwoods are pretty nice.

Wedges are Cleveland rtx zip core and man I really like them. The grip around the green is insane. I really wish I didn't just by the callaways jaws.

Starting her right, a game for life.
Yes she is now driving the ball about 100 yards. By the time she is 12, I will be in trouble. She just turned 9 last week.

Played Seven Hills/Hemet this morning with @satellitemike Mike and gang. Not the best pic but it’s the only time i thought about snapping one. Tough to beat the greens for $40.

That was a great course back in the day! They used to have a pretty good Wednesday skins game when the course still had all its bunkers and the greens had the original shape.

Yeah, the bunkers don’t have much sand. #16 is shrinking by the day with a Poa takeover. Other than that it’s a good track. Gotta hit some fades, gotta hit some draws. Rough is long so it’ll punish a bad shot.
I grew up playing at El Prado. I appreciate a good value. You always knew that they could have great fairways to match the greens but no one wanted to pay for it.
