I'm looking into buying a 2000 HTM SR-24 can anybody give me some details about this boat that previously owned one or had a buddy that owned one and rode in one.

2000 Mold any different than previous years?

Love to her any educated opinions.

I'm aware the owner of HTM passed away back in 2002 as well.

Pretty sure the boats hull remained the same throughout the years they were in business.

I have been for five or six 100+ mph rides in HTM's.. They are definitely a lot of fun. I never experienced it personally, but over the years obviously there was a few of them that ended up upside down. In talking to at least people on the forums that rolled them, they more or less said "Didn't do anything different then I've done a 100 times before and next thing I knew I was swimming."

Obviously they have a reputation for flipping, which is where all the High Turn Over Machine jokes etc.. come from. Amazingly enough even with that reputation they still hold their resale better then most brands of boats (which completely escapes me as to why). I'd own one if the price was right, but not sure I'd take my kids in one (low speed or high speed)

yes, R.I. P., in 2002 Steve, Ken Lane his engine builder and Mr. Pumps on the HB boards. Steve would have built that hull at his Agua Dulce home/shop. Ken did most of the engines but some lesser priced boats went out with Merc's. Alan Hensley built almost all of the trailers.

A friend had one back a few years back with a blower motor roughly 800hp, lots of fun when it started to pack air.

Over/Under on this thread being longer than the recent F34 thread?

You will hear they are death traps.....also drivers boats.....also totally fine when driven correctly.....also unsafe at any speed like a corvair....look like a short school bus....have a ton of room and freeboard...

The thread will be about as on target as a shotgun blast @ 100 yards

We had a 24SS with the 540 ran high 80's low 90's never had a scary moment in it at all. Never had a problem with the boat. I rode with Steve in another customers 24SS with a 565 and we went just over 100 never felt scary at all. Steve passed away a few weeks later.

In the 99-00 SR & SS models I believe they had wood floors in them and then they changed to a fiberglass floor in the 01-02 years on up. I owned an 2003 SR24 and worked for Lia at HTM in 2003-04 as there driver.

The boat I'm looking at has a stock 502 merc in it, so you are saying even if the top speed was 65 mph you wouldn't feel safe enough to take your kids in the boat? HTM has that bad of a reputation of flipping even at speeds under 65 mph?

My SR24 had a 496ho in it. 74mph was the top speed. I sold the boat in 06 and the guy who bought it flipped it in Havasu. Apparently the gimble broke and made it do something weird. It had an XR drive on it with NO hydraulic steering. I think this may have helped if we had the external steering on it.

My good friend has one and it is fast as hell for a 24. He is at 105 plus with a whippled 502 mag. This is actually the first time I have heard anything ill about them. I was very comfortable as a passenger and thought the boat rode well.

Knew Ken from the street races. My friend Randy (RIP) had a spot at McIntyre Park and Ken's parents were his neighbor at the park for many years.

I Had a 2000 SS 24. It had a blown 565. I never had any issues with the boat being unsafe. You will need to get some seat time, they ride nice in Smooth water. If your looking for a ruff water boat buy a 25 Daytona they pack air differently.I have had both boats. The HTM was faster in smooth water vs the 25 Daytona. Enjoy your new boat

I never cared for the design myself but I knew a guy on Skaha Lake I frequent who had MrPump's boat. He would run that boat WOT most of the time and never complained about handling issues.Haven't seem him lately and never heard anyone flipping one so, I wouldn't worry about having one with a n/a 502.;):thumbsup

Just so we're clear... Are we using the word "flipping" when we should be calling it "rolling," correct?

Or are we talking about flipping front to back like it being a kite?

I like the HTM's, always seemed fast for their size, but they look like they have a higher center of gravity than others in the same size.

I have a good family friend that had one and was very close with Steve prior to his passing. I don't reme.ber the power package he had in his but he never said anything about it being unsafe or anything like that. I think his ran just a tick over 100. He sold it cause he didn't like how tall it was in the water (he's a low freeboard/outboard type guy like myself). For a while (don't remember what years) they were the fastest single engine 24' boat with factory mercury power on the market. The engine builder and company had such a good reputation that mercury allowed (or authorized, whichever) them to install prochargers on a factory motor and maintain the factory warranty.

I've driven a couple 1100hp 24's. I think they were both the SS. Couple of things come to mind. Fist off they accelerate like crazy. That's a fast bottom. To me in the low 100's I had enough before the boat did. But up to 100 they felt solid. They're rigged really nice for their time. They were rigged like Cole's or any of the other top builders on the west coast long before DCB changed how boats were done.

They command some respect with big power. I feel like you could get in trouble above 100 if you don't have some seat time.

I currently own a SR-24 and love the boat. I will say most people either love the boat or hate them(no grey area). If you speak to people who have owned the boat I think you will feel very comfortable buying one. With that said I believe all boats have their limits and many HTM have pushed those limits. To be honest 1000 hp in a 24 foot family boat is a ton of power. I built a very mild 509 blower motor (550 hp) and have yet to hold open WOT and have seen mid 80's which for me is more than enough. I personally like the freeboard since I have 2 kids under 4 years old.

As outdrive 1 has stated the boat has a fast bottom, has a hop around 45-50 mph and once it packs air it accelerates very well. Mine is a 1998 and is a heavy boat and it does like some power to get on plane quickly. Test drive it and see what you think if you purchase it make sure you add Hydraulic steering and you should be good.

I had one of the first few built in 1997. Probably the only outboard built with twin Mercury Promax 225. I never had any issues with handling and frequently ran Offshore fishing. Ran a solid 95 mph and touched 100 mph solo a few times. Steve was hands on back then and with his partner Roy they built some big Horsepower motors. I believe Steves personal boat ran over 130 mph. Roy had a SS with Alum. small block that I ran 126 Mph and we filmed with chase boat.
Any boat can have handling issues with Drivers error or Drive and Steering failure.
Very sad what happened to Steve. He was very involved and always practiced safety when testing. I was up there the day before the accident. Lia did a great job pushing forward with the business and raising the girls.
I would say drive it and you will love it.

How is the lean when turning with either SS or SR? I've been back and forth with my feelings on these since they came out. I used to love them, then heard roll over rumors, changed opinion. Started to not like design of them, now I'm kinda back liking them again. They are reasonably priced for a really fast cat with pretty good room in them

I wanted to make a flipping joke. But it's just in bad taste and my New Years resolution would be busted in 6 days.

I will ask this though... Have you owned a cat before? Never mind it's a 65 mph boat. That means nothing. If you have not.... Then please take your boat budget and pull a few bucks out and take a tres Martin class or equivalent.
Like it or not there is something about them that they do roll, doesn't make them bad just a issue they are plagued with. Sorta like other brands that roll as well,,, D$@. Or even flip

How is your 25? Mine leans in pretty nice as long as I trim @ 0 or even -1 before turning

Mine has some outward lean, more than I like anyways. If I have it trimmed right I can pretty much turn as fast as I want, otherwise once its leaning it leans quite a bit. I usually am running @ 2-3 while driving 40 and up on my offshore style gauge. If I try to turn the Big Bend turn on Parker it will lean like a SOB if Im not trimmed perfect for the speed. It turns super flat and runs super flat when trimmed closer to 1, I just hate the restricted way it feels. As soon as I trim up a bit it is such a better ride. Honestly I just run the fuck out of it most of the time because it drives so much better, Its a much better cruiser on Havasu going straight. Parker I just let it rip. If I only boated havasu I would never notice it, I mostly boat Parker so Im turning all the time. I want to do the Tres Martin just to get better. I have a ton of seat time in it for having it only 3 years, but im always open to getting better and fixing what I could do better

Roy replaced the skeg on my lower unit back in about '06 or '07 I believe. Right before he left HTM. He used to be pretty tight with my family friend and my uncle. They were both invited to go on the boat that fateful day.

I still talk to Roy every now and then. He's living in Vegas now working for Ted Olsens pool company (Ted started Redline Boats) not to be confused with RPM boats. Roy designed and built a 30'r for redline. I believe they only made a couple of boats out of the mold.

I remember hearing about him going to redline. I heard something about the 30' being based off the HTM but modified.

It pretty much was based off the SS24. He used his personal boat for the bottom and modified it obviously so it wasn't copied to a tee. He made changes that he thought would better the performance and safety.

Well I hope he made changes in hopes of making it better. Be kinda shitty if he made them for negative changes. Lol!

I never heard anything else from or about Redline. What happened with them and we're they any good?

The only 2 boats they made were Roy's boat and Teds boat. Roy's had a blown injected 540 out of his Htm, and Teds was set up with twin 496ho's. The boats seem to run good, but I just think it was bad timing with the economy when they were trying to bring a new boat manufacture to the market.

Yes I am here! I love my HTM they have a very unique ride. They do not like being run under 50 mph and they love being trimmed almost 50%. They will lean like any cat in a turn. My boat feels 100% stable at speeds around 100 MPH.

The boat OSB is talking about it probably one of if not the best looking HTM I've seen. He has over 100k in that boat and is letting it go dirt cheap.

No you are perfectly fine... get some stick time... These boats tend to ride better above 50 mph and almost 50% trimmed out this is speaking from experience.

This boat ran 143.8 MPH it is very stable

I owned a 2001 SS-24 that at the time was the fastest naturally aspirated HTM at 107mph. This boat accelerated hard and was rock solid at higher speeds. Like most cats it runs pretty wet at lower speeds and will tend to lean out in certain turning conditions. Water current on the river plays a roll in this, plus trim and corner entry speed. The HTM is very trim sensitive, which for a driver that has a good feel for what the boat is doing is a good thing. I'd say for a driver that doesn't have a natural feel for what the boat is doing under him and wants to simply set the trim at one setting and just drive, the HTM is probably not the right boat for him.

I've never driven an SR, so I have no first hand knowledge about how they handle, but from the outside they look to me like the CG is way to high with the extreme free board. Just sitting still they look like they want to roll over. This may not be the case, just an observation. I do know that people are attracted to the SR for cabin space and for the open bow version. I can tell you, the last thing you'd want to do is put very much weight in the front of that boat. As I said earlier, they run wet at lower speed and with added weight up front the CG really gets thrown off and will increase the bow steer and leaning effect while turning. This will make the boat want to trip forward over the front of the outside sponson and cause the boat to want to roll.

All that being said, I absolutely loved my HTM. It was a blast to drive and a true water rocket. I actually just found that a guy has it back in Louisiana and it's for sale for half the price that I originally built it for. I'm half tempted to go buy it for a fun project.

Good luck with whatever you buy [emoji106]

I know this is an old post I'm bringing back up, stumbled across it trying to find the caliber/HTM thread. Anyhow...I don't know if a fellow inmate owns this twin 225 SR24 or not, but I have a bunch of pictures of it from a few years ago when I tried to buy it. If anyone knows who owns it and they are interested, let me know.

Also, I talked to Cale back then and he told me there was one SR24 with twin OB's (this one), and one SS-24 with twin OB's. It was for sale, in Vegas I believe, about 3 years ago. Had some green colors in it...I don't recall what motors.

you would be safe.....If your expecting to turn really hard or tight, like any cat , they are not great at that. The reason they have a bad rap, most of them had big power
and people tend to push the boat beyond their capabilities.....When you hold the record for speed at 145.6 MPH for years, you tend to create haters

My drive broke in my SR 24 at about 110 MPH.....I had dual hydrolic Imco rams, boat coasted to a stop perfectly straight ! Anything over 75 mph i would add hyd rams for sure

I have a 2005 HTM and I believe 2004 / 2005 the bottom was less skiddish due to some blue printing and tooling mods.. I cannot speak for the previous generation bottoms but as a current owner I agree with the comments above to include the steering and proper prop set up...
