So I’m going with a L hand drive prop over a R hand drive prop on my Howard 21 RC. I did some testing and this fixed all the weird handling issues over the 3 blade it came with. Big thanks to Marco! Before I tear into the shifter to reverse the Drive forward mech I thought I’d ask you guys the down low on how to do it and what to look out for?

Heres a pic of what I have mounted port side with cables running back behind the driver direction.

Why an I/O control on a V-drive? Am I missing something?

Although I have not done it myself , I have read you simply swap cables on the controller/shifter .

I haven’t pulled it apart yet but did take a look at the backside of it. I cant seem to find any how to instructions online .

Thx! Yes I have looked. All I can find is how to replace and fix old bushings in the shifter.

So I’m going with a L hand drive prop over a R hand drive prop on my Howard 21 RC.

Check the back. If the shifter cable or bracket is able to connect on the opposite (180) side and you have the option to push or pull you may be in luck.

If your old forward was pushing the cable you now want to pull..... and vice verse

I just replaced mine but didn't notice if it was possible

Check out this link for the install for a Dana Side mount shifter

http://www.marineindustrieswest.com/installation/Shifter_1-6_WEB.pdf

Scroll down to the pics of the old shifter and the new install. It'll give you a good idea

Check out 5:05 on this you tube.

You can see cable mount bracket on the top and bottom, 180 from each other providing the install to be on either side. One side pushes the other pulls.

I would assume if yours is like this you can swap the shift cable to the other side and change your cable entry point

Awesome thx! Even though I have a different shifter than the one used on the instructions I can see now how the mechanism works and how to make it do what I want. Move the drive cable to the other mount, connect and go.

I’m eyeballing the hardin marine shifter at CP Performance but it will be $750 before I have everything I need to do the swap. I’m trying to cheap out this year on the boat since I’m rebuilding my race car this year.

What handling issues were you seeing with the 3 blade? Did you ever try a RH 4 blade prop, or did you just go straight to the LH 4 blade? Curious because I have the same boat with a RH 4 blade and were wondering what handling issues you were having.

With the 3 blade the boat would list a little to the port side. I would correct it with tabs. The 3 blade would blow out bad around turns and blow out the prop on take off getting on plane.

Marko said this was what his friends recommend and it honestly corrected all the weird issues. I still have to use a little tabs to keep from porpoising but that’s across the board with these 21’s from what I’ve been told.

It ran 62-63 mph at 5k rpm with the 22 b1 4 blade. Not bad. Now if I can get these lightening headers on I should see a solid upper 60’s.

What prop are you running and what engine, speed & rpm?

I have a bone stock 454 mag (330 hp?) with a 22 Hill Signature SL prop. Never been able to GPS it, but at 5k rpm the pitot speedo is flirting with 70 mph, so I am thinking we are both seeing around the same speeds. I need to mess around with the tabs to see if I have the listing issue that you are describing. I set them a while back to get a nice flat even ride and haven't touched them since. Next time I am out I am going to measure them to see if one is sitting lower than the other since I don't have indicators. Next on my list is some IMCO powerflows.
