Houghton Lake, Michigan

Drove from San Clemente to Houghton Lake, Michigan to spend the 4th with family. Put a rdp sticker on the back window of a rented Explorer hoping to be spotted, not yet. Lake is full of pontoons, bow riders, & jet skis. Only kinda Hot Boat I’ve seen is a older 18’ classic Donzi, but everyone on the lake is having a good time. Enjoy the holiday!

I grew up near there. Houghton is a fairly shallow lake which makes it subject to wind causing rough wave action and more used for fishing and like you see, pontoons. Beautiful place. Take a ride a ways north and go out on Higgins. Higgins is deeper than hell in the middle and to me a better recreational lake for boating and skiing......Aerial views show the shallows near shore and how the middle turns dark blue as it gets deep.

Side note on Higgins. Years back a guy drowned in Higgins and his body was recovered much later in Lake Superior which is 200+ miles north. They theorize the body worked through deep under ground springs. Can't find the story, but this was documented back around 1960 or so as I recall

Yep, I agree. Higgins is a better sight.

Dated a Chick from Clio for awhile. Both her Mom and Dad had their own House on Higgins. Spent quite a bit of time on that Lake.

Had friends that dove a lot in Higgins. Spotted some huge lake trout. In HS we used to put in at the State Park and camp. Lots of fun.

There was a teen nightclub in Houghton Lake that attracted HS and college kids from all over the state and beyond. More hotties than a guy could ever hope for, packed most every night. Inside and outside dance floors....Place was a legend, The Music Box. Commonly know as the Box. Played nothing but records and served Cokes and burgers. No alcohol. Original owner had it written in the deed the place could never serve alcohol. Older guys, over 21, would borrow our ID's to get in.

After 21 there were several hot night clubs around HL. Place was summer greatness to party for all ages. Ski Higgins all day, party Around Houghton all nite. Winter time held strong when snow machines became popular. Tip Up Town was huge winter on ice festival on Houghton in the winter. Bars were full of pussy.

Miss those days. Lots of great memories.

My daughter went with some friends to spend the holiday at their lake house in Indiana. They are on Lake Wawasee - I’ve never been there but it looks like the have a nice set up.

A great summer trip would be towing the boat to a bunch of midwestern lakes - one of these days???

No boat. Our boat is in Havasu. Did a road trip from So. Calif. to visit family. They have a lakefront cottage, pontoon & jet ski on Houghton Lake. Going to check out Higgins Lake & Mackinaw just for fun.

Thanks. Leaving Houghton Lake on sun. or mon. to check out Higgins Lake & Mackinaw Island. Then back to Grand Blanc & Holly for a couple of days. Leaving middle of next week for home to So. Calif. Allowing at least a week to drive home.

Dad had a cottage on Houghton back in the late 70's.

Have a friend with a place at Higgins. Looked at getting a lake house there but the summers only last from Memorial Day to Labor day. Get's to cold any other time. My wife and I do not do cold.

Higgins is much nicer..the weather here has finally turned around..have fun on the island
