We went to hoover dam on lake mohave yesterday. Was a blast and no one out there. As we got up to the dam there is a sign overhead (before you turn the corner to see the dam) that says restricted area. We went past that and went all the way up to the floating line across the river and over a loud speaker was a message that we were to turn around immediately, what are our intentions, if we didn’t turn around, we will be considered hostile and force will be used. This was new I don’t remember this message being played before. Sucks cuz we barely could get close enough to get any picture.

So what’s up with that?

So you blew past the restricted area sign, but not sure why they had to warn you to leave?

I dunno, but I'd say they probably found the recording necessary when they discovered people have no respect for signs, no matter how dire, and consider them nothing more than suggestions unless they are more forcibly convinced otherwise.

In 2002 I got chased by a large Navy inflatable with a lesbian manning a bow-mounted 50 Cal. in San Diego Bay for simply acting like I was going to get close to the large floating barriers protecting a berthed Air Craft Carrier --- and I was on my Jetski !!!

Hell, there wasn't even a sign posted
The funny part was, they couldn't catch me, until I finally just shut it off and waited for them, I figured that would buy me some Brownie points --- nope, the Dike on the gun had an itchy trigger finger and had deemed me a threat and I wasn't going to ride away without an ass chewing. 🤣

You can’t even see the dam from the where the sign is. Last time I was there 6 years ago there was no sign

Everyone bitching he crossed the sign.
I read the post and start thinking did they push the sign farther south, removing the ability to see the dam from the water.

Heard of this recording but never heard it any of the nine times I've done the dam run. First time I ran up there only the rebar was sticking out of the ground for the bridge...last time was in 2012. I think it's just a matter of who's running the fort that day. They let a lot of kayakers/Democrats hike down there and launch...probably why its still open. That sign placement is real BS...they know why people boat up there. Great picture!

Even though we are all probably on a no fly list now, it was worth it.

After we exited the area and were floating down stream we watched 3 other single boats do the exact same thing to see the dam - No alarm.

I think we got too close to the barriers. Or our group of boats looked threatening.

That sign is placed where you can’t see the damn at all, it’s around the corner from that.

So if you want to see the dam, you have to go past it.

I’ve seen pictures of people going right up to the floating barrier. Better pictures of the dam, no doubt.

But when I did it it, we got to the spot where you can see most of it, but not all of it. We stayed a few minutes to marvel and snap some photos and then turned back. No need to poke the bear.

Though someday maybe soon, the floating barrier will simply by down by the sign and no one will see the dam again from that vantage point.

I think because people want to see the dam, and the tourism it brings to willow for kayakers, that while they would love to put the barrier down at the sign and block it off permanently, they know the community would freak for loss of tourism dollars.

I wonder if any current 'Terrorist Threat Levels' play a factor in how much / often they enforce the signs / restrictions.

By way of reference, . . . I've fished the Long Beach / Federal Breakwater for 20+ years.
After 911 the night time 'patrols' by the Coast Guard , Long Beach PD, Homeland Security, LA Port Police etc. etc. became a lot more 'random'.

Hear me out . . . .
Prior to 911. you could bet money that any patrol boat going by would do just that . . . go by, . . . and usually wave.
After 911 it became super random . . . some nights they would would roll up, pull along side you, ask you a few questions, check your boat with flashlights, then leave.
Other nights, they would kick you out all together, no exceptions.
The next night, the Coast Guard would pull up, ask to see all your safety gear, and even write you a 'boarding slip' . . . not a ticket, but a form showing that you were boarded and inspected on such and such date.
Just about the time you'd get irritated for 'just fishing' out there , one of the patrol boats would pull up one night with a couple cool dudes who would stop and talk fishing for a while, then split & say, 'Good Luck, and have a good night'.

So it was super random.

I knew a guy who was an avid fisherman and retired from LE, . . . he went to work down at the port for the DEA.
He had access to a lot of the inner workings down there . . . he said that looking through some of the cameras, he could tell what type of cigarette you were smoking.
He called a buddy once while he was fishing in there and told him, 'That lure doesn't work there', (described every detail of it). 🤣 Tripped him out.
He also said that the different agencies receive all kinds of daily reports regarding security, threats, drug shipments etc. etc. and that most, if not all of it, is never known to the general public.

I don't fish the breakwater at night as much anymore . . . but even now, some days you'll never see a patrol boat out there all day. . . then on some random day the place is crawling with every boat that has a siren on top.

So perhaps the access to the base of Hoover Dam fluctuates daily based on current affairs / reports / threats etc. , and as mentioned above, with how ambitious the person in charge is that day.

Nice convincing sign, looking all super professional and all....ah NOPE.

Make a real, professional sign or how about signs.

If you paddled up there on your Kayak you get the "How nice to see you" recording.

They gotta do what they gotta do, I get it.

I wish we would have recorded it. That alarm is loud. We heard it over the 2 800HP Magics, and all shut our motors off.
We could see people walking around on tours looking around to see where the noise was coming from. It was the submarine under attack sound from movies, and the prerecorded voice that said we would be considered hostile.

Back in the 90's we camped at owl creek cove and would make the trek up the dam, it was always fun to have newbies jump in the water to cool off then scramble back in the boat after realizing that water is butt cold:)

If you want to have some real run and an exciting morning --- Launch at Shelter Island ramp in San Diego Harbor. Then proceed as if you're heading out, but when you get to the Pt. Loma Sub Base, turn hard to starboard, increase the throttle and head towards the long pier that often has several Subs at berth --- be sure catch it on your Go Pro, or better yet, launch a drone and record an overhead video --- This will be a story to tell your grandkids, trust me.🤣

My Bro-In law decided to pull this stunt on his jetski despite his sister and I yelling at him to stop and turn around.
Guess he wanted to get in a lot closer so he could clearly read the sign that stated how many ways they might choose to kill you. 🤣

So we just floated at a distance and watched the chain reaction of events as they unfolded.
Minor problem was, because we were on Jetskis he hadn't worn his glasses, so apparently it wasn't until he got much to close that he finally noticed about 8 dudes with AR's running straight for him.
Then he hesitated for a moment as he pondered "Fight or Flight", apparently choosing option "C -- Surrender" as both arms shot skyward.
We were laughing so hard we damn near fell off our skis overhearing them chewing his ass out and him apologizing, finally allowing him to turn and ride away. That's one of those stories we enjoy reminding him of, still now, 20 years later. 😁

try driving into the visitors center on top. They search the entire car. I couldnt remember what key opened a tool box in my truck and they tried to turn me around to leave. When I got out of the truck to take a ring of keys to try them they pulled guns and got all crazy. I told them you want to see my tools then I will show you.

Its easier to get COCAINE in the White house than to drive on a big dam!!!

To be fair, that was right after 9/11/01. Could have played into the response.

Buddy works at that base.
Within the last month an ‘armed’ sub had to make a stop for a repair. The security goes up a few degrees when those are on the base.

A few unmarked ‘security’ boats are usually floating / moving in that area when the those ships float in.

You are correct. Prior to the horrific events of that day, there were no protective floating barriers and we commonly rode along the sides of the berthed carriers marveling at their size and shouting a friendly greeting to the sailors working onboard.

So that particular day was the first I'd noticed the barriers as I rode up and I turned off before even getting that close --- assuming nerves might be running high and after having witnessed the "Charge of the Light Brigade" when my BIL had made moves towards the Sub pier.

That's why I'd hadn't even bothered to notice I was being chased by the Navy patrol boat falling further behind by the moment.
When I did notice I stopped, shut off and waited for them. More out of curiosity as to if and why they were following me. 🤷‍♂️
Realizing the well armed Dyke on the 50 cal was growing increasingly hostile as I attempted to explain how I'd never even got close, I decided it wiser to let her get her fem-dom briefs wet by reaming my ass as an alternative of getting a 50 cal through my ski. 😬

Follow me money 💰

Kayakers, more appropriately guided rental kayakers, pay for the opportunity and privilege to launch at the dam.
To a guide service. They have the permits $$$, I'd imagine.

While someone with $100k boat doesn't have any money at play, as far as the dam is considered.

I've been passed the sign a few times. Never had a recorded message over a P.A. system.
I even had lunch at/near the launch platform and stairway, on the Nevada side. Probably on a random Wednesday though.

Yeah, and it's not a Naval port in sandy eggo, either.

We drove our RZRs across the top of Hoover Dam in November.

They told us to keep our guns in the vehicles if we got out to walk around.

We would have got less attention if we were in Lamborghinis. The tourists all had WTF looks on their faces.

In 1978 and for the following two years my daily field office was a trailer parked within the Navy Weapons Storage Depot, directly across the bay from the Sub Base.
I could look out my office window observing that base and all the other ships coming and going. Having been in the Army and not Navy, I bought the newest edition of Jane's Navy Ships book so I could figure out what I was looking at.
We re-did the entire weapons area electrical and three buildings to support the new Tomahawk Cruise Missiles and relocation of Nuclear Storage from Seal Beach to Naval Air Station North Island.
Remained on that base for another two years replacing the base's 12KV electrical, before relocating and spending the next three years at 32nd Street Naval Base continuing with the 12KV upgrades.

Following that the next contract was installing a base wide underground high security communication network covering the entirety of the Pt Loma Facility including the sub base.
The amazing highlight of that two year project in addition to working in all the secret subterranean catacombs, was working out on the Dolphin and Beluga whale training pier and having Belugas spitting streams of water at you. 🤣
Despite the cold shower, you couldn't keep from giggling because they always had that expression that doing so made them so happy. 😁

I like to look at the dam as much as anybody. But in todays world when every carpet flying asshole has crossed our border. I want that fucking dam protected. It’s unimaginable the economic and physical damage that an event at the dam can cause. I would rather see it lined by America’s finest, and g to a rockets on the stand by.

I remember hearing about Grads getting blasted with the loud speaker for paddle boarding too close to Folsom Dam. I thought they used some sort of sonic device on him too?

Dam officials could get callus to people pushing the boundary to where if something really happened the terrorist could get a whole lot further into the area.

Someone should put a few empty 55 gallon drums in their open bow and see how far they get just to keep security on their toes. 😁

Every dam run we blow past that sign.
Every year the tour guide white van pulls up and usually a middle aged white woman (now identified as a Karen in todays society) gets out and yells at us all to leave. She takes pics, yells and uses her walkie talkie--nothing more. We all ignore her and answer back with loud stereos or rev's from the engine.
There have been several occasions that a dam security truck will roll up. They have stayed higher on the hillside--but nothing more.
One year we got into an argument with a giant tour raft driver. He almost drove up MilkMoney transom (hahaha) before I got in between them (god that sounds gay)

I have always thought I would get a notice in the mail or an officer coming to my door--but nothing ever happens.

I like to see the mass crowd of tourists form at the top of the dam watching all the boats.

Hummm, that's weird all they had to do is play this song and you would have quickly left the Restricted Area.

Heard the warning over a bullhorn/loud speaker in the late 70's.

Kayakers purchase a permit to launch & are a limited amount each day.

Commercial raft operators are NPS concessioners.

Well since we pretty much have open borders and we have enemies (radical muslims) that you can be sure have entered the country and are probably conspiring to do damage to something, someplace or someone in the future or near future, as much as it sucks, I would hope that our damns and the precious water behind them are on high alert again. And the worst part is that a drone attack would and could be done rather easily. So again, as much as it sucks and might hurt your feelings, I think I'll take precautions over not having a dam, lake or a very minimal river at best. Just my .02

I’ve boated past the sign too , guys with big guns came out of some big doors . Kinda like jumping the fence at Area 51 . You guys that taunt the guys with the guns could pick the wrong day and they decide to make an example out of you and you find yourself with Jan 6 roommates . Pick your battles wisely.
