Read the article please.. their laws are different than ours and while good intent was there, there isn’t enough forethought in the laws..

Basically their law says if you withdrawal your lawsuit your case has been considered lost.. so you are responsible for the other parties legal bills.

The law looks to be initially setup to prevent frivolous lawsuits.. but doesn’t take into account things like this.

The Syrian was sentenced to over five years in prison, which was later overturned by the Supreme Court and reduced to two years and seven months. However, the Supreme Court decision also destroyed the officers’ civil case.

The judges there argued that officers are not entitled to damages in a case of “gross sabotage against police operations” because it is considered a crime against the state and not against individual police officers.

Based on this finding, the officers had no hope of winning their case. Westberg and the other police officers in the case therefore withdrew their claims for damages.

However, in the procedural code, anyone who withdraws their civil case is considered to have “lost” the case and must pay the other party’s legal fees. This is what happened in this case, resulting in severely injured officers being forced to pay damages to the Syrian who attacked them.

I must admit, I did not read the article and assumed it was based on a jury finding.

Expand the quote:
But, don't the police officers work for the "state" and their job description includes defending the state. If they didn't do their job, this "extremist" could have done much more damage to the officers, to state owned property, and others around. So now any police officer who has to use force to stop harm to himself or others can be sentenced to pay for damages inflicted onto the said perpetrator while apprehending him for committing a crime?
