Came home today and the temp in our house was 88, 104 outside, that was no AC and all windows (dual pane) closed, attic fan was also running. Any ideas how the heck to keep it cool with out running the AC all day when nobody's home????

So, it's 104' outside and you want the inside of your house to stay cold without using your AC?? Easy, run a duct to your neighbors house and use their AC....

Mine just got up to 86 about 30 minutes ago. I try to keep things shut up as long as possible. Keep your house dark. I think mine would be better if I had newer dual pane windows. I don't touch my attic fan until the evening when the air is cooler outside. Running your fan all day is just pushing air through your attic. But it's all closed up so no new air cycles through. Which you do not want to do anyways, cuz hose is closed up and the air outside is 104 anyways. Suck it up and set your thermostat to a tolerable level just to keep it in check during the day. Maybe set your timer to turn it one 30 minutes before you get home. You be surprised what even setting it at 82 would do. Like my house was hot about 30 minutes ago at 86, but I turned it on for like 10 minutes to get it down to 84. At least it's tolerable. I'll get in the pool within the hour to cool off while I bbq. Then open all the windows and use my attic fan as it gets cooler.

I just turned the ac on here at the house as well. It was 88 in here and want to get it down to the low 80s' I was not bothered by the heat but the poor dogs were panting like crazy. I keep the house all closed up during the day and we only have single pane windows as well.

Buy a programable thermostat or a Comfort Care phone remote thermo. I call the house an hour before I get home and turn the a/c on.:D

It's cheaper to run your a/c all day then to try and cool down a really hot house. That shit will run all night long to cool your house Jeff. Turn the temp up to 78-80 when you leave. I keep my house at 72 all the time. :champagne:

Shameless plug but relevant to the topic. Interior window shutters also offer excellent insulation properties. I Know of one company that has taken the nessacary steps to certify their product for an energy tax credit. 1" of wood has the same insulation properties as 16" of concrete. After doing a whole house of shutters you will notice a decrease in your heating and cooling energy consumption. It's has a pretty major effect, some of my clients have rooms in their homes that they basically do not use during the summer heat becase they just can't keep them cool (south facing large unshaded windows) you slap a shutter up on it and it's a major game changer.

Here is a link to the energy tax credit info.

LOL>.... Dude, M and I were laughing with our trip down there yesterday. I told her that pansy ass Dave has a/c at the house. It was cold down there. We were reflecting on if we missed it or not. Kinda yes, kinda no. I would never touch the a/c if I were you. Seriously.

72 at the river. 72 at home. :). If the Ac can't keep up, it's time to add another one.

Why not? Fuck it, my electric is never over $100 even in the middle of summer. Without it my house would be 90 degrees at night with our shitty insulation and black roof.

Oh, and add a swamp cooler to the garage. I have one at both houses. Keeping that garage wall in the 80's helps the Ac units cool the house. I open the scuttle in the garage at home and let my swamp blow into the garage and through the attic.

I have a programmable thermostat. 78 all day when at work, 75 an hour before we get home, back to 78 at 10:00. Amazing the difference 3 degrees can make when it's 90 plus outside.

It's not the AC unit I'm concerned about it's the wallet.

How the fuck you manage that? My PG&E bills are $250.00 easy for a heavy usage month!

Funny the way our minds think.

I stress about my electric bill being 100 bux higher from the ac in the summer.

But throwing down 100 bux at the turtle in one sitting....

Never stresses me out...

I would too if my bill were always that cheap. Shit mine has been right around 100-115 the last couple of months. Today was the first day I touched my a/c all season for only like 10 minutes. Being down by your house yesterday, I find it hard to believe your house would even need it. We stopped by Michelle's cousins house right up the street around Arlington/237th. House was small like yours. Breeze was flowin nice. Breeze even closed the door and nothing was flowing through. House wasn't even warm. Hell, standing outside in the sun wasn't even warm. You should drop some insulation rolls in your attic. That shit is cheap.

House doesn't even get warm enough to kick it on till about 2 or 3 o'clock on normal days. Keep in mind 80 degrees is a hot day here. It'll only cycle on 4 or 5 times all day. It the hottest in the evenings when the sun goes down. My roof is black and shitty attic insulation can make a house an oven. Also my house is only like 900 sq ft. It's only a 2 ton unit.

Again, why? It's cheap to keep my house cool with the A/C. Also, at night when I'm at work my wife is afraid to have doors and windows open. So A/C it is. Hell I left my house at 4:30 today and the house just finally got warm enough to kick on the A/C. I don't think it got over 75 outside there today.

My thermostat is programmable. It don't run all day & it kicks back on before I get home from work. I keep my attic hatch pulled down in the garage so my whirly thingys on the roof circulate the attic air (no attic fan) and my electric bill is like 200 bucks. Right now it's 8:30 and it's 74 in the house and it was nearly 100 today and real humid.

Run your attic fan during the day 104 heat is a lot better the 150 in the attic. Causing your whole to heat up with the hot attic.

I have three large skylights that open. I run seven ceiling fans and keep the blinds closed... Keeps the house cool until the evening breeze... Open everything up at 6pm.

I almost turned on the AC today.

I'm pg&e also and it sucks. Decent size house and a big pool runs north of $1500 a month.

Thanks for the input, Dave, I'm going to leave it on at 78 and see wht it's like when we get home... So it's the obvious that there are no secrets to cool the house.

So do you think I should keep all my windows closed and just run the attic fan during the day? It sucks in air from one of the bedrooms. Seems like when I tried this before, the house got hotter. The house does not warm up until around 2 or 3pm. By 4 it's real warm if I do nothing. My attic has alot of insulation above the ceilings in the bedrooms. The attic area up above is pretty open. Vents on both sides of the house at the pitch. In my backyard, under my big covered patio (west facing) that runs the length of the house, there are about 20 vents. One of the pitch vents has an electric fan that kicks on with a thermostat. I know it's hot when that thing is on. 30 minutes ago, I just opened up the house. All windows, and kicked on the attic fan, since it felt cooler outside when I walked out the front door.

When I'm not unemployed and can afford a high bill, that's what I do.:D Hell, I leave my thermostat at 81/82 when we're all gone. When you get home, it's not bad. Kick it down to 78 to drop a chill. By then, outside temp is cool enough to keep it that way.

Shit, my AC doesn't turn off if it's over 85 outside. 83 year old 2,800 foot brick house with the original single pane windows. Been in the high 90's for over a month here. Only time it shut off was when it broke down. Had it fixed in less than 8 hours and it was back up and runnin and hasn't shut off since. Im worried about this months electric bill. Probably $300 plus the $300 fix on the AC, lol.

Didn't even have an AC when I lived in Newport. I do miss that.

You all have it easy!!!

Couple years ago I bought one of them Solar power attic fans, not the mushroom vent type but a fan for the gable vent. Doesn't cost me a penny and the constant flow of air through the attic(not drawn air from house) has kept the temps down in my house by several degrees.

downstairs A/C gets turned on maybe 3 times a week for short periods depending on certain circumstances.

At home we pay the same year round. 350.00 per month. At the river, last year I had a bill for 550.00. That was an eye opener. This year I put all new windows in. It hasn't been above 350 yet.

Cooling the attic space with cooler air will decrease the inside house temp. The attic in the summer time can bake. Any airflow in the attic will help. I have a gable vent fan not sure if there is a difference. Whole house fans help a lot too but way more money then a attic fan.

Yea, I guess I have the whole house fan? Is that what it is called? It is in one of the ceilings in a bedroom. About 24X24. Blades shut when fan is off. Kinda centered in my house. House is still warm right now. but the air flow is good. As it gets cooler, the cooler air sucked in the windows cools the house and then into the attic.

We keep our house at 77 all day. average bill here durning the summer is 300. Winters the bill never goes over 70 bucks.

We also found that closing off the vents in the other rooms forces air back into the rest of the house. I heard it works real well in a normally hot river house as well. :D

Working all day fixing AC's gets pretty sweaty. Coming home to a cool house is priceless. We set ours to 80 while we are at work and 30 min before we come home it switches to 75. Just before we go to bed it switches to 72 for the night. Because its cooler at night with a smaller heat load on the house the AC runs less and the interior humidity goes up feeling warmer then it really is. That's why we lower it so much at night. We bundle up and sleep like a baby in winter time.

In the summer we reduce the air flow to the first floor and increase it to the second and visa versa in the winter. We modified our duct to do this though. Closing off vents may cause a loss of air flow and increase energy costs and increase compressor failures. Every house is different

Same here, 2 story house. Hot air rises cold air sinks. Seems to make a difference for over all climate control.
