That was bad and I have seen three boats go boom but not this violent. I wonder if anyone on the deck/helm survived?

We were probably 80% with using the blower then a couple of my former players and their parents and siblings had a boat explode on them badly burning all of them, we are now 100%, hit to close to home.

This last summer while at the lake I hear from behind me "Hey coach", I turn around and it's Landon one of the 2 players swimming over to say hi. Yeah I cried, it was so great to see him out enjoying boating.

Definite gas fumes explosion. Started at the rear.

I guess on larger boats there are other sources of ignition beyond the engines that means pretty much running the blowers pretty consistently.

Had this happen to me and friends (on much smaller scale obviously)
Front bow fuel tank. Breather hose vented just to left of the ignition under the bow. Breather hose was loose Fueled up. Turned the key. Blew 3 of us out the little 18 ft ski boat boat. Driver got pinned by the steering wheel.
Luckily he had only minor burns on legs
Scary as fuck can tell you that.

Replaced the breather line. And fuel line to the motor and running g it the next day.

I've had instances of people wanting to smoke on a boat. They at least hold it over the side while not puffing, but I can't tell you how many times they've held it right near the fuel vent until I point that out. Certainly some close calls.

Now the rule is if you need to smoke I'll stop and they can do it standing on a dock instead (and not the fuel Dock either).

That was an eye opener, hopefully everyone was OK, almost blew the deck off the boat. I've never owned something like that rig but am aware of what ignitable fumes can do with an ignition source. My dad was born and raised in North Dakota and worked on grain silos in the summer during high school in the early 60's before I was born and explained to me how silos would blow up sometimes.

I bet these people had no clue what could happen if all the fans and safety systems were not working properly or overridden buy an ignorant person. I always open the engine hatch on my boat on the ramp while at launch depth for a couple of minutes before lighting it off. Boating is great, but as most things in life you need to understand the risks and mitigate them, especially if your family is involved.

One of the passengers was blown clear and landed about 20' behind the boat.

It's hard to believe the gas fumes weren't noticeable. The bilge and entire cabin were involved. I don't think I've ever started a boat with an enclosed engine before opening up and eyeballing it.
