How's your knee doing?
I get mine done next week๐Ÿ˜ณ
Doing awesome with no issues....other than not being able to play in the NBA :)

Seriously, rehab is important.....pre surgery rehab on your core area would be nice as you will be using your core in rehab quite a bit. My main concern was that I could get back to a non pain day when walking or even being able to sleep on my back. Both accomplished.

The other knee I wanted replaced as well and my Doc agreed with me but.....my health insurance only allowed the other knee to be cleared out. That has run its course so I will get that replaced over the next year or so.

You got this......your Doc does make a diff but the rehab peep rule after the fact.

Good luck and good health going forward!

I'm having some FOMO on life in general.....ya know, like being a burden on my wife & unable to handle things at home. Big reason I've put it off for 45yrs. How long did it take you to be on your own two feet?
.
And holy hell it's embarrassing to admit I own a damn walker๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿฆฝ
Lol๐Ÿ˜„

I probably shouldnt answer this...lol

Same day I was walking with a walker. Within 1 day I was walking all over Lucystrikes ranch without the walker. I did have to slow down a bit after that though as I was impacting my rehab negatively as i kept walking around challenging AJ to races. 2 weeks after I was riding my Harley...went to a gun show. Within 3 weeks or less I took off on a 3k mile road trip driving my stick dually with a 42' toy hauler. Oh....took no pain meds ;)

I aint your average bear though. Results may vary. Lol

All true

Just know you need to feel pain when rehabbing. The thing to find is that gray area between good pain and damaging pain. You dont want to damage your knee again. It has to settle in. If you need pain meds take them. I dont simply because I dont want to mask it. It allows me to know the different levels.

The throbbing will test you a lot! Lots of ice on the knee for X period of time...then off...then on again. All while elevated.

Have a good comfortable area you can sit for many hours while your leg is elevated with everything you need.

If you can get one of those circulating ice machines I would suggest it. If not have 4 of those large ice pads as you will be rotating them constantly.

Not much more to add. You get the results you put in

The circulating ice machine is a game changer. They significantly help to reduce swelling, you'll get off pain meds quicker, etc....

I was skeptical but after a rotator cuff surgery, it was very beneficial. Good luck Zig!

Ditto on the ice machine and its benefits. If you can use one I would highly recommend.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm not a big fan of narcotics and hope to be off 'em asap. My hope is to be mobile sooner than later. ๐Ÿคž

Go in with the mindset you arent gonna take them then. I dont take any of that stuff. Not even when I had emergency kidney stone surgery. Its a mindset Zig.

I used to take advils but wont even do that anymore

Do it without pills as long as you are able to. Then you could cut the pill and do half. If you canโ€™t take it then the other half. I am the same way if the pain is manageable donโ€™t. But if you need it you have it. Most patients these days are up walking the same day or next Like others have stated. You got this Ziggy!!!

I have a fairly high pain tolerance plus my knee injury is so old I think it just ignores pain signals๐Ÿ˜„. Even my ortho doc is surprised I walk 3-4 miles every day & don't have constant pain as worn down as it is.
I'll probably just hoard the pain meds I get for parties later.๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Well, you are some lucky guys. Mine hasn't gone nearly as well. Looks like the doc is going to have to put me back on the table again and manually bend the hell out of it. I can't get more than 96* flex in mine and he says I need at least 105 - 110* range of motion. Gonna hurt for a few days, but it hurts now when I try to bend it.

Zig...Probably the worse pain you will have will be when the nerve shot wears off. I think it takes 2-3 days. You will already be walking and maybe even starting rehab. Have your wife fill the initial pain meds just so you have em and then decide.

When I got released a friend picked me up and brought me back to AJs ranch. I fo not remember the ride but was told that I was talking nonsense all the way to AJs. Lol

I dont think you are going to have any issues with it all.

How did you do in rehab? I was doing it 3 days a week and started a couple of days after surgery.

Sorry to hear it didnt go well. I was lucky as I had one of the best knee replacement Docs in the USA.

They put me with in home rehab for 3 weeks. Basically, didn't do squat for it. In hindsight, I should have gone straight to outpatient rehab. In outpatient rehab now, 3 days a week, but I'm not sure it's going to help that much. If the doc cracks it for me, I should be good and will get rehab 5 days a week for two weeks afterward.

I gimped around with the first one for 5 years I must have at least a dozen braces and velcro wraps , replacements were truly salvation the second one last year was also a HUGE relief and even though I was back to work at my desk I wasnt 100% till recently , Both knees and my right hip were all outpatient (in the morning out late afternoon) The ice machine is your friend as mentioned , pain killers make me sick so despite the scripts I used ice and Tylenol. I was walking my driveway with the home therapist the next day , never did any other formal rehab . Today I walk as well as most middle age men . I dont run and I sure dont jump off boat trailers for tools

My doc ordered home therapy but said go get real rehab as soon as I can. He isn't a fan of the home rehab but for the first little while it's still better than nothing.
My doc is highly regarded sports knee & shoulder reconstruction specialist in this area.

If your recovery is anything like mine, I was shocked to realize how much pain I had been in for decades when for the first time since 1988, I had zero knee pain (about 3 months post surgery). It is amazing what the body can get used to. I now have had both replaced and couldn't be happier. Good luck!
