Stupid stupid stupid. When I rebuilt my trailer, I went all the way to the metal, replaced all the breaks even all new break lines. Obviously new bunks, all new wiring and lights. The jack is double the factory capacity.

When it came time to buy a wench, I was just fatigued from all the moeny I had spent and besides the old wench worked fine….. until the first time I went to use it. It slips

Any ideas on how to replace it without making it look like shit? Ideally I’d like to just rebuild it but it seems the company that made it went out of business 15 years ago and my quest to find a new one and gut it came up empty.

I’d pay good money for a working set of internals. Not sure if it says 5407 or 6507.

you have a good eye, I think it is 5407

EDIT

On eBay search, no 5407 found. Someone sold a NIB one back in April.

I did find this which makes me think internals fro a 5408 will work. Just ordered a 5408, worth a try.

I would look at it carefully and even take it apart while it's still on the trailer. Determine why it's not working, it's not a complex device. Measure center to center on the two bolts and width and compare against others to find parts that can work in yours if necessary.

Could also use a new one from Fulton, cut old one off weld some bungs in and bolt on new one. The fulton’s have a plastic cover so will hide everything under it.

Take a sample to a good paint store that does automotive paints. They should come close to the color and be able to put it in a spray can for you.

I actually did that when I powder coated the trailer. that was 2 years ago. IIRC there was a bushing that was missing and I fabricated a new one from 1/2" SCH40 PVC

It's looking like all the Shelby 5400 series have the same housing, just stamped for what internals were installed. When the 5408 I ordered arrives, I'll find out and it's rated for 200 pounds more than my 5407

Thank you for taking the time.

Can you tell me this, do you have 2 Shelby different units you can compare? Is the housing the same?

My son‘s winch died, so we cut it off. While we were at it replaced the POS surge brakes with electric over hyd and a new jack. It still need‘s a bit of bondo love but not bad so far.

Nice upgrade. It looks like the new brake system just hooks up to the existing hydraulic brake line? What is it wired to?
I have the same trailer.

I have the same trailer.
We converted it to disc brakes as well.
The actuator just needs hot, common and the wire from the brake controller in most modern trucks. You will need a 7 pin wiring at truck and the trailer. All is pretty easy to do.

I can’t tell the difference between the 1,700 pound version and the 1,900 pound version. this morning I stripped both down and compared parts. the better ones I put 1 wench back together and it operates very well now. I bead blasted parts I couldn’t determine which was better, they are much easier to evaluate in the white. Rattle canned all the parts and put it back together. I’m still keeping an open search for a good condition 5407 or better yet, old stock NIB. They do come up every now and again.

The root of the issue was this crank handle bushing that was missing when I bought the boat. The replacement I fabricated wasn’t white thick enough.
